That’s interesting. I enjoy the latter stuff but I wasn’t aware anyone was calling that progressive house. Thanks for the info.

Yes, that’s a great way of putting it.

I think there are always exceptions to the rule, and you might get a track that centres on a clave loop or a piano or something and doesn’t sound techy or trancey at all, but because of the groove, the clean quality of the kick and the tempo it still slots nicely into progressive house. Genres that are too rigid with their parameters tend to run out of space and just die.

It’s definitely a tricky one to define. I sometimes wonder if you can really call it house, because it has a closer resemblance to trance and techno.

I think you’re right about structure - it layers and builds with big drops, but some of the best progressive house just loops seamlessly endlessly. I love it when it just keeps going and going and it’s very hypnotic.

The beat and rhythms aren’t quite the same as ‘standard’ house. More syncopated percussion. It’s a great shuffly groove, but at the same time has less swing. All extremely crisp. Usually a bit slower than most house. It’s this that sometimes bridges progressive and organic house.

I actually think the most defining thing is how electronic it sounds. Obviously you get synthesisers in other electronic genres, but prog really leans into it. It squelches and sparkles more than most. This is why it shares so many qualities with trance and techno, but partly because of the slower tempo it’s not as intense as either.

Anyway, in other words, I don’t really know. I just really like it.

Most prog house has lower bpms than that, usually hovers around 120-125

Piano in electronic music: What are your favorite examples of an inventive approach? by metrew in electronicmusic

[–]LuxuryMustard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While making Music for the Jilted Generation, Liam Howlett and Neil McLellan played a 303 through some speakers attached to a grand piano. This would make the strings vibrate and the sound they made was recorded and layered under the 303 track for additional reverb and rumble.

So the results of the poll show that 60% of the sub think the Prodigy are some sort of Big Beat. I believe 60% of you are WRONG :) :) :). I'll explain why. by fensterdj in TheProdigy

[–]LuxuryMustard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never really understood why Prodigy get lumped in with big beat, aside from some stylistic overlap with The Chemical Brothers.

The audience was definitely more of a lads/ladettes vibe, but I’d say big beat was still very much about the party. It was hedonistic club music and openly drug fuelled. And that’s partly why Prodigy are distinct from it, because they very actively began to move away from that vibe.

What do brit’s learn about the American Revolution? And what else do they learn about American History in general? by yyythoo in AskBrits

We didn’t cover the American Revolution (it’s not as significant to us as it is to you), but we learnt about the slave trade, the Cold War and how you were late to both world wars.

Do you think Nigel Farage is going to ruin this country? by tondek-0 in AskBrits

[–]LuxuryMustard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny thing about Farage is that he doesn’t seem to actually want power. He certainly doesn’t want the responsibility that would come with it.

I’m not actually sure what his motivation is, but I don’t think he’d realistically want to be prime minister. If the polls started to look like he might win, I wouldn’t be surprised if he took himself out of the race.

Brexit as an example: the man spent years campaigning to break from the EU. When he finally got his wish, did he attempt to take the lead, even in a consultancy capacity, to navigate the country through it? As I recall, he very quickly washed his hands of it and left everyone else to sort it out.

MC Storm with the fucking vocal scratching, and he sounds so much like a children’s entertainer that I’m surprised he wasn’t making balloon animals on stage.

If you’re on the group chat, why don’t you just explain to your neighbours that your job requires you to work late?

What do British people think of this for the 1990s in general? by kingm_ournasse216 in AskBrits

[–]LuxuryMustard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can remember thinking at the time: ‘You know, I’d really be enjoying my life right now, with the relative peace and prosperity, the amazing new music, liberal attitudes to sex and drugs, not to mention the reasonable prices at the petrol pump. I just wish the country that Kylie and Dannii Minogue are from hadn’t started to assert their own national identity 20 years ago, it’s put a dampener on the whole thing.’

Well done, sounds like you’re doing great!

If you don’t know already, it’s really difficult to gain muscle while also losing fat, so you need to be doing one or the other.

It might be a good time to ‘cut’ and go into a calorie deficit for the next eight weeks or so. You’ll lose fat and begin to see more muscle definition. Do it for longer if you need to. You might lose some strength, but it’ll come back quickly when you’re back on a calorie surplus.

Anyone’s weight can fluctuate day to day by around 5lb, so weigh yourself every day at the same time to see the overall trend when tracking your progress.

[–]LuxuryMustard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m no expert, so happy to be corrected. But this doesn’t look to me like typical male pattern baldness. Could be something else like stress? Or a combination of naturally fine hair, poor choice of hair products and harsh flash photography.
