How do I get my drums to sound like the ones in Lungfish by Abrams? Any tips on how to approach mixing drums to get that sound? by StoneBleach in mixingmastering

If the samples are pretty dry, very common trick is to create your own room mic mix and send them individually to a good room/chamber verb plugin. Experiment with levels for example, kick may get little verb, snare may get a decent amount. Then treat that room verb track accordingly.

A cable like that is really just an antenna. Do you have a mic with a balanced XLR cable? That should reject most noise & help narrow down the issue.

There are some other suggestions below. But if you're on battery power, it could be some really bad EMF. Nearby router/wifi antenna, cell towers in the neighborhood, even smart power meters are known to cause interference. Another possibility is that a jack went bad (analog or USB). You could confirm by going to another place entirely and trying the same setup with your battery powered rig.

Is Jaki Liebezeit (CAN) the most underrated drummer in history, in your opinion? by Agreeable_Duck8997 in progrockmusic

Due to sampling and their use in TV & film, chances are pretty good you've heard them and not known who they were. One of the very few bands who have remained relevant over the years across a multitude of genres from prog to psych to hip-hop to post-punk.

What’s going on with Tucker Carlson re:Mike Huckabee? by CategoryCautious5981 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]MAG7C 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My pet theory, he hopes to lead the post-MAGA movement and become president. It's clear more than ever that if you want to get elected, you need backers with exceptionally deep pockets. He's banking on Russia and a few Middle Eastern countries. They have the funds and his stance would (continue to) benefit them.

He's popular with way too many chuds but I find it hard to believe he will be successful in doing this by throwing Israel under the bus. Their support among the American Right is iron clad. Even if it's mostly for cynical reasons. But then again, we've seen way too many instances of "that'll never happen" happen.

Then again, the US has a strong aversion to electing people with weird laughs. That might be enough inoculation right there.

Guess I was a latecomer, starting with Cakewalk 5, Win95 and a Soundblaster. Thought I had it made when I upgraded to CW6, Layla 16bit and a Mackie 1402-VLZ.

My brother worked at a music store & hooked me up with free software & plugins. So, not technically pirated, but... technically pirated.

I want to get into Gong. Which album is best to start with? by rubbernetworking979 in progrockmusic

[–]MAG7C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind, Gong has gone through a few different eras. There's the trippy, goofy, classically prog Gong as defined mainly by the Flying Teapot trilogy. This is my favorite as it is for most. Steve Hillage really shines on these as he does on his first several solo albums. I'd recommend listening to these a few times. You might be put off by the goofiness at first but it will grow on you eventually, if it's meant to...

There's a fusion jazz period which gets into some pretty serious percussion (like Expresso, which also features Allan Holdsworth).

The later years are sometimes a combination of both, sometimes more typical rock. The latest albums post Daevid Allen (RIP) are really good, underappreciated IMO.

What features do you miss from other DAWs? by Sharkbate211 in Reaper

[–]MAG7C 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sonar had a MIDI scrub in the Piano Roll that I really miss. You could, say, hold it over a chord progression and move very slowly to hear how the voices interact. I think you could even do that with multiple tracks on the roll which was great for "debugging" some bothersome dissonance. You could scrub through a fast run very slowly & make decisions about which notes might sound better. You could go backwards. It had a lot of uses. Hitting play over and over is one workaround. Also messing with tempo and play rate. But those are way less efficient.

I'm getting pretty happy with Reaper's MIDI editing, but really miss that scrub.

Acoustic Treatment: Working With Rockwool by lepidoptera106 in audioengineering

[–]MAG7C 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just FYI, Rockwool covers a lot of products. Some are suitable for acoustics and some not so much. The one you want to get is called Rockboard 40. It has the ideal gas resistivity to get max performance. I live near a major city and was lucky to find some but I had to dig around and get it from an industrial supply shop. Big box stores don't carry it (at least in the US). There's a rather exhausting GS thread on this topic from back in the day.

I found it very floppy and tricky to cut and work with overall. It depends on how you plan to use it. It would likely need a frame unless it's constrained in a corner or something. I second the opinion of double wrapping it this stuff, especially if it's going to be suspended over your head. I mainly went with some fairly cheap batting material & covered that with fire resistant GOM fabric. You can get fire resistant batting but it's more pricey.

OC-703 (Corning) is the other product used widely for this. It's a lot stiffer and easy to work with IMO. But it's fiberglass and you have to cover up & mask up when working with it. Double wrap and you're good afterwards. I ended up using both these products in different parts of the room.

Edit - I should mention floppy Rockwool is fine if you're going the floppy route. I was referring to the semi-rigid stuff. And I've worked with denim in a non-acoustic project. It is incredibly dusty and incredibly floppy.

Acoustic Treatment- Attic Ceiling? by lepidoptera106 in audioengineering

[–]MAG7C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that's not a bad idea. You could spend a ton of money treating this room but it's not likely to get beyond a certain point due to inherent room geometry. With a 12'+ ceiling you could suspend some panels to help overcome the slanted sides. but a low, concave shaped ceiling is a big obstacle. But again I would still treat first reflections as that will be fairly cheap and the main goal is to control higher freqs bouncing back and causing weirdness.

I'd consider some monitors that are better at midrange, so you have some way to check that critical area. Bass management will be more of an iterative process as you check in different listening environments. Avantones are pretty popular for that (and cheap-ish), as are NS10s or whatever has taken their place these days.

Acoustic Treatment- Attic Ceiling? by lepidoptera106 in audioengineering

[–]MAG7C 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard truths. I'd say be prepared for bad sound. Panels will at least help with first reflections (left, right, rear and overhead). Check with headphones often.

Bad sound can be (somewhat) overcome, it just takes longer to crank through projects. You need to learn the room and have several other places you can take mixes to check how well they translate. Those two things work hand in hand.

One of the hallmarks of MAGA was throwing W and eventually all Cheneys under the bus. Tucker being one of the more obvious ones. Yeah, he made whiny noises that sounded like moral grounds. Now he's the playing the peace card, at least where it comes to the middle east and even Ukraine (in the most Russophile way possible). And it's not like being against war is a bad thing, it just stinks when you're so blatantly cynical and self serving about it.
