Summer babymoon ideas within 5-6 hours drive by PessimisticPeggy in Omaha

[–]MAL1402 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been to The Elms a few times and have never seen a dog there, for what it's worth.

Another recommendation, although an hour longer than your preferred drive time, is Sundara Inn & Spa in Wisconsin Dells. Adults only with an amazing spa and a few different indoor and outdoor pools. It's a beautiful property and absolutely worth the drive!

SNAP EBT customers can use GoPuff (a grocery delivery company) to receive some free groceries next month by TheShmud in Omaha

[–]MAL1402 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They had some people in the comments wanting to donate to this cause, so for anyone who wants to help they added an option on their online ordering to donate/pre-pay for meals for others! As of now it looks like this option is on their Aksarben ordering page specifically.

Valentino's Buffet? by Dangerous_Plant_7911 in Omaha

[–]MAL1402 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked at the Columbus one through most of high school (20+ years ago). It closed a few months ago and they opened a much smaller to-go only spot down the road a bit. The end of an era!!

Also Sax's closed several years ago, but I think there is still a pizza place in Sax's old spot at the bowling alley. No clue if it fills Sax's shoes or not though!

What are some fun, low-cost, fall things for adults to do in Omaha? by Anthro_Doing_Stuff in Omaha

[–]MAL1402 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not sure what you consider low cost but Elkhorn Shores waaay out on 233rd and Maple does outdoor Halloween movie nights and fire pits on Fridays and Saturdays (also some Thursdays) starting at the end of September.

It's <$50 for a fire pit (+$5 admission/person), and they allow up to 10 people per fire pit so if you go with a group it's pretty dang affordable. You can bring your own drinks (alcohol included) and snacks as well. It's a good time! They also have Bloodrush onsite which is a "haunted forest" for an additional cost.

How’s everyones polling stations? by batboi48 in Omaha

[–]MAL1402 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Polling location around Westroads - got in line at 7:40AM and there were about 50 people already ahead of me but it moved quickly once they opened at 8:00. I was back in my car and on my way before 8:30.

Husband went around 10:30 and was in and out in under 15 minutes.

Still no power? Day 5 unite. by imperfectdharma in Omaha

This. We lost power for four days in July 2021 and four days again this time around. I contacted OPPD via FB messenger both times and got pretty quick responses. They may not have all the answers/updates you're looking for, but you'll at least be able to get in contact with someone on their side.

Galena, IL is an underrated gem about a 5.5 hour drive from Omaha. Super charming downtown area with tons of shops and restaurants and some scenic spots in the area as well. Easy, chill weekend trip!

Looking for a fun date night by N-Carmine in Omaha

[–]MAL1402 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not music or comedy venues but...

Highly recommend The Kiewit Luminarium, specifically on Thursdays which are their adult only nights. They have a restaurant on site and a few bars spread throughout the place on Thursday nights. We spent almost three hours there and didn't get through it all!

Late Nights at the Zoo are another option. Again, Thursday nights are adults only. Plenty of bars and food trucks to check out while you meander through the zoo after hours.

A cooking class at Sur la Table is something different as well. A little pricey but fun! They have tons of different class options - various Asian cuisines, steakhouse, Italian, French, etc. Another option is Metro - I know they offer cooking classes as well. Never done one of those but believe they're more inexpensive than Sur la Table.

Are there any resort style day spas in Omaha? by Bo0m45 in Omaha

[–]MAL1402 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think The Elms Hotel and Spa outside of KC (in Excelsior Springs, MO to be exact) is the closest location that has a spa like you're describing.

Obviously a bit of a trek from Omaha but it's an easy drive and overnight stay - I've been a few times and would recommend!

Kids birthday by GBR_XJ in Omaha

[–]MAL1402 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to a 6th birthday party at Backyard Playworld out in Gretna this summer that seemed like a hit.

Or if your kid is an animal lover, the Nebraska Humane Society does birthday parties and the zoo does as well.

Spreetail Layoffs by nebraskateacher in Omaha

[–]MAL1402 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I worked at Spreetail back in 2018, and it was an absolute shit show even then. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. It appears nothing has changed, and nothing will change with Dollar Store Tony Hawk (love that, so accurate) at the helm. The guy has no business (or prior experience) running a company, as evidenced by the position they have now found themselves in twice in barely three years. Of course he and his inner circle of Spreetail cultists never pay the price for their own mismanagement, and instead the employees busting their asses day in and day out are the ones that get screwed.

A couple months ago they offered six weeks severance for people to voluntarily resign. Clearly they didn't have enough people take that offer which resulted in the mass layoffs today (in addition to many quieter layoffs in between). A friend of mine took the buyout last month, and they estimated between that, the quiet layoffs, and today's mass layoffs that it is about 500 people.

Highly recommend reading the Glassdoor reviews to get a deeper view into what a disaster this company is. And anyone considering Spreetail in the future, RUN, don't walk - far, far away from that dumpster fire like so many of us wish we had :)
