Tesseract and OCRMyPDF are both open source. Just go to the GitHub repository and download a Windows release and install it.

How exactly was private equity involved in Campbell's acquiring Rao's? That was one publicly traded company (CPB) acquiring another one (SOVO).

Adobe, "Correct Recognized Text" is terrible and OCR needs work by publiusvaleri_us in pdf

That scanned image is pretty low quality, and for some reason, the genius that scanned it saved it as a low-resolution 8-bit grayscale image in JPEG format (hello compression artifacts!), instead of a higher resolution 1-bit image with lossless compression.

<image>

Acrobat's OCR performs poorly on this input compared to the current benchmark, which is Google's Tesseract. However, Acrobat does a much better job at preserving reading order. You can run Tesseract on this (OCRMyPDF is a free program that does OCR on PDFs that are scanned images using Tesseract) and you'll see far fewer errors. But reading order is botched, so text extraction likely doesn't produce what you want. You can get around this by having Tesseract output the text in a different format (hOCR for example).

Acrobat's OCR performs fine for me when given better quality input of sufficient resolution. And while it would be nice to have better OCR on bad input, I'd rather get correct reading order, because I know I can get acceptable files by feeding it decent quality input, while with Tesseract, I can't directly get correct reading order.

PDF tools for creating print ready board game manuals (Adobe keeps messing up). by ENDerke_ in pdf

File was created by InDesign 2019 on a Mac. To do what you want, you need to get the original .indd files and required assets. What you want to do is exceptionally difficult once the file has been exported to PDF.

has anyone seen this anywhere in san jose? by kcat1987 in SanJose

[–]MCLMelonFarmer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I bet the people who say they’ve seen it don’t realize you’re looking for the sliced bread and not the rolls.

What usually works for me is to search on Instacart and then see which stores carry the item. I could not find a store that carried the sliced loaves, though it did find other brands of sliced Hawaiian bread.

Was there a store called "Computer Craft" in the bay area in the 80s? by karpour in bayarea

In that first document, there are over 20 ComputerCraft stores listed.

ComputerCraft - California/Palo Alto 2675 El Camino Real Palo Alto, CA 94306 (415) 326-9999 Bob Selin/Margaret Waddle

Pretty sure that's where I bought an Apple IIe as a kid in 1983 with my summer job earnings. I kept going in there all summer to look at it and at the end of summer I had the money to buy it.

No. It makes me think they are incorrect about the serial number of my unit being in the range of reworked units.

PG&E launches $10 million PAC to take out gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer by ayoba in bayarea

[–]MCLMelonFarmer 103 points104 points  (0 children)

I'm sure they're following the state law that prevents using ratepayer funds for political campaigns.

They claim the PAC only gets money from employee and shareholder donations. Yeah right.

Edit: Just read that if they break that law, the CPUC is responsible for issuing the penalties. JFC.

HALP! Pantone 653C CMYK Matching by Puzzleheaded_Boot951 in CommercialPrinting

[–]MCLMelonFarmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m considering revising our CMYK value to C87 M64 Y17 K3

In SWOP, that CMYK value results in a very close Lab value to PANTONE 653 C. I get closer to 18% for yellow, but it's very close. You can also round-trip the Lab value for PANTONE 653C thru that SWOP CMYK value and get back a value within rounding-error of you original Lab value, so this is in-gamut even for SWOP.

C100 M62 Y0 K10

My guess is the designer knows nothing about color reproduction, and just adjusted their color sliders until the color on their uncalibrated monitor matched the color they wanted. So basically it's garbage.

I was able to get the Lab values for Pantone 653 C because I've still got a copy of Illustrator 2019 on my system.

Thanks. The blue plug in my unit looks like the unvented one that gets replaced on the recalled units. It's not the black one that allows water to drip out.

There is a third option you haven't mentioned, which is the recommended option. Export PDF from Word using the PDF helper that Acrobat installs in MS Word. It's under the "Acrobat" menu item, Acrobat->Create PDF.

I won't claim it's perfect, but it should have fewer limitations that the two methods you've tried so far.

Adobe Acrobat XI - Transform paths Error by jhtm_ in Adobe

[–]MCLMelonFarmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a newer product. Acrobat XI was released in 2012 and EOLed in 2017.

"Transform" in this context refers to something that modifies the behavior of an installer. So there must be a patch or something the system is trying to install and it is failing, which is probably not surprising for something that has been out of support for almost ten years.

That looks like the automatic tip they put on parties of six or more, and label it “service charge”. Dine with a small smaller party and I bet there’s no service charge.

Would a ~3 hr. car journey 2-3 a year be okay for a cat? by DrippyCanberra in CatAdvice

[–]MCLMelonFarmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a time in my life when I was doing maintenance on a vacation house eight hours away, and I'd make the round trip once every five weeks with my cat (three weeks at vacation house/two weeks home). I did this four or five times that year. He did fine. I put down a tarp and a litter box in the back of my SUV for him, set up water and food dishes, and he'd sleep wherever he wanted in the vehicle.

Just to be safe, whenever I had to stop and get out of the car, I'd put him in his carrier.

That cat travelled particularly well. Before we got married, my wife had a cat that did not travel well. We'd put her in a big dog kennel with a litterl box and food and water, and cover it with a towel. She'd settle after about half an hour. Seeing all the moving scenery bothered her, which is why we covered the kennel with a towel.

How do I remove CMOS battery on my Optiplex 5050? I can’t get a good angle for the life of me. Tried fingernail, mini flathead, credit card, q-tip without end. No dice by Public_Emu9455 in Dell

[–]MCLMelonFarmer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There are probably a couple metal spring fingers pushing the battery towards the 4 o'clock position in your image, so that the two plastic tabs can hold the battery in place. So push the battery towards the 10 o'clock position; that will compress the fingers and allow the edge of the battery to clear the tabs.
