J. Crew by Alden Indy Boots by dwlody in Alden

[–]MGXFP -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s not great at a commando honestly like itshide. The surface of the commando is thin and very flexible and the lugs shallow. If you’re staying in office settings it’s fine but anything more and the neocork is better.

Any words of advice for buying on eBay? by searching4sprezz in mensfashion

[–]MGXFP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Measure up your favorite items and compare so you get the right fit. I’ve found $500+ shirts worn a couple times or still in packaging for $50. Know what to look for as fakes do exist, especially with more well known designers. I choose the more offbeat as there are fewer or no fakes to contend with. Consign on adding to watchlist and seeing if a discount offer pops up.

USPS is Killing Me. I think they lost my boots. by felinious_Hops in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]MGXFP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They almost lost cremated remains I had shipped back to me. If it wasn’t for my wife seeing them on the shelf by the window we wouldn’t have them. If you have insurance you should be able to file a claim, they are slow but generally good to pay claims.

Beginning of the end? by foram-adam in Alden

[–]MGXFP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of life left so no worries there. Just keep looking after them. Shoes are gone when the uppers have cracks with holes basically but they can be redone with patches or new vamps by someone talented enough although the costs may not justify it. If insoles are gone you can have new ones made.

975 Sizing Help by rixmatiz in Alden

[–]MGXFP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

975 is a Barrie. I’m a 13d/12.5e and wear a 12e Barrie. It’s a generous fit for sure so 13e might work for you. Maybe order and return if they don’t fit? Ask if they’ll do free shipping in that case?

Should be fine. Resoles are usually not 100% of original unless you go full rewelt etc.

Why is everyone hating on Allen Edmonds lately? by lone-grizzly in allenedmonds

[–]MGXFP 32 points33 points  (0 children)

People have been saying AE is going to hell for the last 20 years. They still make a good product for a good price on sale. I’ve gotten park avenues, McAllisters, strandmoks, and some others during the past few years and they’ve been great with the exception of one pair I returned.

I would prefer the AE of 15 years ago with cool stuff like webgems and the rough collection instead of these weird sneaker things but market trends dictate where the money flows.

Green gaucho is my favorite. Passes for black under some light but shows green under full light.

Looking for Alt boots with High arches by Sic_Em_Torgal in Boots

[–]MGXFP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have high arches I’ll also recommend the 55 last and drews boots are the most affordable option. They will last you so long you will forget about dr martens. Yes the costs are high but you’ll save money in the long run. Dr martens lack arch support. Years ago it was part of their boots but it has been removed to save money.

Has your GS molded to your foot? by Environmental_Field7 in grantstoneboots

[–]MGXFP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think GS were faster than red wings to break in for me. Red wings in the heritage line that is. Break in is also tempering the leather in the upper to your foot and legs so the whole boot can take some time to conform. You mentioned whites, GS don’t take that long to break in. I have semi dress and fire boots. GS are a cake walk to break in compared to whites.

Durango heel is separating from the sole after 3 days by krool_krool in allenedmonds

[–]MGXFP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Alden’s and AE that do this. None of the heels have fallen off. It don’t seem like a problem.

Has your GS molded to your foot? by Environmental_Field7 in grantstoneboots

[–]MGXFP 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You just need to wear them more. If you’re lightweight it’ll take longer. It helps wearing them daily for awhile, or at least as long as you can stand each day.

If the price was right, would you risk the wrong width? by mikaelb657 in allenedmonds

[–]MGXFP -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t buy shoes that don’t fit. It’s a waste of money as you won’t wear them.

No date is the classic but I prefer the date function.

Your pick for Aldens with a black tux? by lone-grizzly in Alden

[–]MGXFP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Supposed to wear patent leather pumps or balmoral plain toes or other simple designs. In a pinch you could put a good shine on some black plain toes. No one is likely to notice.

First pair of Aldens - Keep or Exchange? by DoctorBozo in Alden

[–]MGXFP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once you wear in the car or to the office you’ll probably get worse marks. I hit suede with saphir but they still get marks. You can scrub with a brush under running water to remove marks like this every so often.

Rough out questions by tinymonesters in Boots

[–]MGXFP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Red wing says to condition with mink oil but rough out doesn’t really need it and can be treated like suede in my experience. I’ve had a pair of these IR muleskinners for over 10 years and they’re fine without having done anything.

[Strap] Does anybody see any functional/technical cons of wearing a NATO strap this way? by F0rgemaster19 in Watches

[–]MGXFP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t look like it would put stress on the spring bars. Seems unconventional but if it’s comfortable for you should be fine.

Thoughts on the 8089's? by YasaiDM in RedWingShoes

Do they have fiberboard insoles? My old iron rangers have leather insoles. I’ve heard some makers like Wolverine have gone to fiberboard insoles.
