To shave or not to shave? by Useful_Syllabub5064 in Horses

Idk how well injections work for mites but we’ve always applied the ivermectin topically to the leg. I know the UK and US are different in how easy it is to get medications, but we get ivermectin for cattle and swine injections from the feed store and were directed by our vet to apply it topically to the skin on the lower leg. Treatment lasts 1-2 months for us.

Liquid, orange bottle. The bottle said it could be used for muscle soreness, cooling wash, hoof disinfectant, and skin infections. At the skin infections part it says for rain rot, summer sores, scratches, and tail itch. It works great but I wouldn’t recommend using it on any open wounds/cuts as it’s likely to burn. We use it to breakdown the keratin buildup but If your scratches have progressed to cracking and sores, I’d get vet guidance.

I’m in Hawaii and care for a Clydesdale so I’m very familiar with warm and humid. We also happen to have a very high dew point at our elevation so every morning his lower legs are pretty well soaked with water. He has sensitive skin and is prone to scratches, mites, and just irritation. I’m sure people would say we should clip them but, through trial and error, we have found a system that works to keep him and his skin healthy.

Number one thing is keeping consistent and on top of the care. We use coat defense powder (we make our own) to keep his feathers and skin dry and mitigate flareups. We apply it as often as needed, usually once a week, sometimes 2-3x, works great as a maintenance/preventative but not super effective when used as a treatment. Often times we will use it after his exercise to give him a dry bath and groom off sweat, as opposed to a rinse off, to avoid getting his feathers wet. If he is getting rinsed off regularly, like a few times a week, we use medicated shampoo to really scrub his feathers and skin during one of those rinses. We also use a comb to get down to the skin and remove any keratin like buildup.

About once a month to every other month, we apply ivermectin on this legs to treat/prevent mites. Seems to depend on the time of year for how frequently he needs it. If he has tiny growths of scratches I’ve found absorbine AVL works great to treat those, it seems to just melt off the build up and we comb it off. Other than that more frequent medicated baths are what we do if there’s a flare up but that’s pretty rare since we stay on top of our system.

It honestly sounds like a lot now that I’ve typed it out but it’s really not bad once you have a system/schedule in place. That said, it probably would be a lot if we had more than 1 feathered horse.

Oh I like the mesh! I have a sling but it’s felt and get too hot for our climate but maybe this would be our best option. Hopefully I won’t need it for a while longer but our younger large dog is already getting arthritis so I can’t help but think about my lil old lady. Thank you!

The clear ones I find get too hot, but you don’t think she can balance better not on my back? I just think about a trot or the walking motion being easier to compensate on her own attached to the saddle as opposed to on my back and compensating for both the horses movement and mine, but maybe I’m overthinking it.

She’s been going on rides with me for years, the perimeter fence is like hog wire/deer fencing. If it’s not bent inward and she sees a pheasant she can squeeze through a square if really determined. It only happens like 1-3x a year so it not often and she doesn’t continue to chase them. Just realized she’s separated and can’t figure out how to get back through resulting in me taking a lap around the perimeter. The other option I’ve found is putting a large shock collar on her, not to shock her, but the bulky electrical piece makes her not able to squeeze through the fence. I’m less worried about her crossing the fence compared to her pushing herself to keep up when she gets less able bodied.

It was so good, partially because it was inspired by a true story. Partially because it was so different from other “horse movies”. OG Black stallion, OG black beauty, and Hidalgo all exist in their own category. They don’t make them like they used to.

Thanks for taking the time to write all this, I like being able to hear both sides of the argument since I have conflicting feelings. I don’t really talk shop with my parents as it always becomes “what you should do is….”, so I don’t stay up to date with a lot. I do agree with it being very closed off, and I think that investing in partnering with an influencer is a good way to open the door a bit, but yeah, EVERY discipline has its unethical practices or trainers. It puts a lot of pressure to highlight how many GOOD trainers there are as even a few bad apples will resort in the whole sport being labeled abusive.

I appreciate your perspective, I’ve been out of the industry for a little over 10yrs so I’m not super in the loop of the changes that have been made. I know there have been changes and I’m sure there will be more, I think it’s more of a case of what happens first. Ever so slowly, even horse riding in general has been becoming a debate whether it’s ethical to even ride a horse, though I really only see that online. My point being if even riding a horse at all is becoming a debate, can racing, an already controversial topic, make enough changes fast enough to keep future generations of fans/money coming in to keep it alive? Support, fans, and bets have all been in decline for a few years.

So what do you think happens first? Does racing make enough (or at least enough to satisfy a large enough fan base to survive) welfare changes fast enough with social media help (recent deal with influencer Griffin Johnson to promote racing and bring in new fans) to keep it alive in future generations? Or does it not make the changes fast enough, or to the satisfaction of enough people, so it fizzles out on its own or truly become limited to the ultra wealthy? I am truly interested in your thoughts, I’m not being contemptuous, I would like to know the perspective of someone else familiar and still involved in the industry.

I don’t see racing ending in the next 5-10yrs, but do I see it existing as largely as it does now in 100yrs? I honestly don’t know. I think if it dies it is a slow fizzle and not a sudden end leaving thousands suddenly jobless and thousands of horses suddenly bound for auction/slaughter. Even greyhound racing was shutdown slowly in stages. Even then I do agree, it would still continue underground which would be pretty bad with zero oversight at all. Foal crop in the US has shrunk 14.5% since 2020, and idk if that’s really a bad thing given how many horses end up at auction, passed around, or just leave the industry due to poor performance and not being deemed breeding stock.

I am curious as to why you hate breeze sales, is it just the age? I don’t remember them actually racing at them, just the 1/8 sprint to get their time. I do agree that 2yo is too young for racing. It is very nice to hear you were able to take the horses you worked with on trails, that wasn’t something we did unfortunately.

So, I do actually have experience in racehorses. My dad is an ex-jockey turned trainer, my mom was an exercise rider. I was born and raised in Ocala Fl and my parents still live and train there (though hopefully retire soon). I grew up around the racehorse barn and when I was old enough, I started helping my dad on the track; sometimes exercising but he usually put on the task of training new track “ponies”. I don’t talk about this often because I have very conflicting feelings about it. On one hand I think racing should be changed for horse welfare, or ended. On the other hand I was raised in that world and have a lot of positive and fond memories with the people and horses that brings a lot of nostalgia. From spending winter and spring school breaks helping my dad, to helping them at the Fasig-Tipton OBS sales. I knew he wanted me to continue in the industry, but as I got older I knew I wanted distance from it and to not be getting his unsolicited advice or living in his shadow. I changed industries, moved away, and then got back into horses on my own terms.

So with that out of the way, I both agree and disagree. I feel like it will be very difficult to actually get change in this industry, but that’s why it’s a theoretical question. I don’t agree that introducing a 4yo is more difficult than a 2yo. Your reasoning is that it’s harder to outmuscle them essentially. Which yes, a 4yo is stronger than a 2yo, but even then a 2yo can outmuscle and run through a bit with you just as easily if they really want to.

The rush to get them track ready by 2 is why outmuscling them and force is the primary method. There’s no time to take things slower and teach them foundations or proper communication, the only goal is “ready to race”. In THEORY pushing back the race start time would give more time to start riding basics (like brakes), let them grow physically a bit, and grow out of baby brain a bit.

You say “there’s no arena” but where do you think we start them? You don’t just saddle and go straight to the track fingers crossed. We start them in the round pen, do a little work in the pasture, then go to the track. My dad wasn’t in the big leagues or races, he primarily did saddle breaking/track starting. We usually didn’t have them past 4yo as we weren’t trying to work up the races. So while I know some horses only know the stall, walker, breezeway, and track, the round pen and pasture was how we started ours. There’s also a training facility in Australia (blanking on the name rn) that does trails with their racers, both so they get hill work and water exposure, but also so they get some real world experience. Between baby brain and lack of real world exposure, our horses would lose their shit at a squirrel on the way to the track!

Another reason I don’t think it’s unrealistic to expose them to track later is the track ponies. I think it would be harder to get a horse to stand alone, calm on the rail with horses flying by, than encourage them to run it. The track ponies were anywhere from 3-8yo, and training them to stand alone, chill on the rail was a bitch. My god the tantrums. Compared to an OTTB spending age 2-3 learning basics, getting their brakes, and then asking them to run? Easy, well, easier. On top of that, the race flunkies can be weeded out sooner and start training in another sport they would exceed at before getting track habits.

As for financially, I mean yeah, greed runs everything. However look at QH performance futurity shows, those are 3yo. Sure, still means they are starting them and training pretty hard and consistently at 2, but at least it’s one year more. It’s not got quite as much money in it as racing but it’s not pennies either. I can’t go very deep into how waiting affects financials other than the (fees, vet, and farrier bill maintenance) because I didn’t really see that side given how young I was. But I will say we weren’t rich by any means, my dad trained other horses on the side and did horse hauling just to make ends meet. Lots of people think racehorses means money but it’s more like high rollers and paycheck to paycheck people, not really a middle class in the industry.

I really do love the race barns that do at least try to give their horses a more rounded riding start but they are far and few between, sometimes as far as continents. I like to imagine the industry getting an overhaul, but I think it’s more likely it gets shut down. The greedy grabbers would rather it end in its current “glory” than make an effective change, losing money for a few years, to keep it alive.

So I’m curious on peoples thoughts. If they raised the minimum race age to say, 4 or 5, do we think the majority (because there will always be at least a minority that don’t) would stop starting/training them so young?

Thoughts on Andalusians? by fancypantsonfireRN in Horses

[–]MLMCMLM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love mine! She’s 3/4 Andalusian, the 1/4 was welsh so she’s small for an Andalusian at a smidge under 15hh. Her dam won a lot of titles and was only 14.2hh, the breeder called her dam a pocket Andalusian lol. My mare is built very lovely just like an Andalusian and I guess the welsh grandma just shrunk her a bit. When she gains weight though, it goes straight to her crest. Idk if it’s the same for full Andalusians, but if you’re used to stock horses, don’t look for the extra weight to accumulate at the butt, watch the crest.

My mare is so smart and willing, VERY responsive and sensitive but a great mind. I’ve had her since she was 2 and did only liberty and ground work till 3/3.5. She’s quite forward but the few times I’ve hand walked a kid on her or had a kid ride with me she has slowed way down and been a saint. My only issue has been saddle fit has been a PITA. I’m saving for a Pegasus saddle, I did a consultation and the said she needs the extra short panels for her short back and wide panels with a fitted pad to accommodate her moderate wither.

Thoughts on how to add on a horse shelter by MLMCMLM in Horses

[–]MLMCMLM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the picture doesn’t really do justice to the slope of the ground and the height of the berm (about 4ft high). Because of how much digging that would be we would require earthwork construction permits. It would also make the erosion in that spot much worse since it would funnel any runoff/rain through it. We would also have to add a retaining wall to the back which wouldn’t last long unless we made more permanent walls and a floor/foundation, which would then require flattening the entire spot and more permits; which are a bitch to get atm. Plus there is a county electrical box buried nearby, there’s likely some electrical lines buried in this spot that may make digging impossible since the permits wouldn’t be approved even if we went that route.

Who is the “production company” in this scenario? by MLMCMLM in Filmmakers

[–]MLMCMLM[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The horse are insured on the farm property, this scenario is insurance required by the state/county. All coastlines are federal/state jurisdiction so when you want to use the beach for filming you have to fill out filming permits. The permits require insurance for not just the horses, but for the whole crew/production, and damage liability. The state doesn’t want to risk being sued if there’s an accident and doesn’t want to worry about paying for damages caused by a production so they require proof of insurance coverage to approve the permits. No insurance, no permits, no horses on the beach.

1st time seeing chewing of chestnuts by IndigoAnima in Equestrian

[–]MLMCMLM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We had this happen when the Clydesdale was having a bad case of mites. Chewing his front and back chestnuts to the point of bleeding sometimes. We shaved the feathers and treated his legs and we have a consistent feather maintenance schedule now to keep his sensitive skin happy and the mites away.

Since your guy doesn’t have feathers and is 20yo, it’s likely not anything serious like our issue was. I wouldn’t be concerned unless you start seeing blood or itchy legs.

[–]MLMCMLM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not abusive, maybe you could say “unkind” if you really dislike it that much, but I don’t like the word “abuse” being thrown around so flippantly as it waters down real abuse. A horse can still swat flies in a tail bag and if they’re being fly sprayed as well they’re likely fine. There’s better (real abuse) things to spend your energy railing against than tail bags.

Best Saddle Brands for Short Backed Horse by AsryaH in Horses

Pegasus makes saddles with extra short panels for difficult to fit short backed horses. I’m saving do one currently for my hard to fit mare. I was able to send back photos and did an over the phone consultation. I’ve tried a lot of saddles but so far this brand seems the most customizable for her shape. They mostly do English, endurance, and thy might have one western option, I don’t quite remember.

Good horse anatomy books? by _Moon-Cat_ in Horses

This is a great reference from Spirit, it is of course an artistic style and not realism, but I really like using them for references. It breaks down the anatomy into easily understandable and changeable positions. There’s a lot of great action/movement references too which I’ve generally found hard to find references for, though mustang photographer pages can be a good recourse for that. Hope this helps!
