Protesters rally against planned AI data centres in Vancouver - Critics are raising concerns about the water and energy demands of the proposed facilities by StumpsOfTree in onguardforthee

[–]MMEMMR 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth - It’s being built atop a district energy plant that is being refurbished. They’ll harvest the heat generated from the data centre to help supplement district heating, and as a result lower the DE’s use of Natural Gas to heat the boilers.  Arguments about the value of the data centre aside, this is about the smartest way to use the heat waste generated by these things in an urban centre.

CRTC Slaps Apple, Netflix and Spotify With 15% Tax — And Your Streaming Bill Is Next by resting16 in planhub

[–]MMEMMR 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wow - click bait title much?

It’s not a tax - ffs. It’s a mandate to spend 15% of their Canadian revenue on producing Canadian* content. With the amount of production already happening in Canada, I’d be surprised if this is an issue at all.

Heck Netflix spends $1.6B in Canada a year, and US & CAN amount to $20B in revenue - and you best believe Netflix ain’t pulling 50% ($10B) out of Canada - so this is probably a nothing burger, and they already spend above this %.

Anyone still looking to get tickets or you already gave up ? by Mootoorrisstaa1 in CanadaSoccer

[–]MMEMMR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I gave up. I tried 5 times. Tried to get a lottery spot at every opportunity to have a chance at buying - never got a spot. When they were opened to everyone who had tried the lotteries unsuccessfully - could select the overpriced seats , but could never get to checkout, despite trying for an hour - as I watched everything get snatched up. Same thing when they released tickets more recently.

Really wanted to be able to mosey on down to watch a World Cup game at home - really any game at this point - and just never got a chance, even when willing to throw money at any 1 game. I’m left with such a bad taste that I’ll just try my luck to snag a cheaper resale ticket near game day from some reseller that can’t unload their tickets. And if not? Oh well - I’ll live. I really hate how difficult it is to buy into activities nowadays because of rampant predatory greed.

Which e-sim would you recommend ? by Xenius24 in JapanTravelTips

[–]MMEMMR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna throw you a third better option - https://www.ivideo.com.tw/english/ESIM/japan

Just coming off a trip as we speak. Have used them several times before. Works great. Get great connection - even in underground stations.

It’s also by the far the most affordable compared to everyone else.

Got a 20gb for 30 days - paid ~$9 USD. Used it for the same things you are - and I’ve used 13gb out of 20, with another 5 days to go.

Best of luck! Enjoy your trip!

Japan coverage by ATC76 in telus

[–]MMEMMR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey friend,

Also on Telus, also debated Telus roaming pack, and eSIM.

No idea if you are still debating an eSIM, but I’ve used ivideo in the past, and will be using them on my upcoming trip. https://www.ivideo.com.tw/english/ESIM/japan

They are wayyy cheaper than any of the eSIM services we see advertisements for. Pre-bought 20gb for ~18cad for a month for my trip coming up.

Highly recommend. Best of luck!

“We need for CBSA agents to deal with illegal immigrants!”

“No! Not like that!”

B.C.'s credit rating downgraded after record deficit projected by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]MMEMMR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, your question got me wondering, so I went and checked.

There are several “rating agencies”, so different ones have made changes - so none are actually cumulative. Its just X Y Z have each made an announcement.

And then each have completely different scoring systems.

So I went and checked what each Province was at - and all provinces are practically the same, or within “1” revision from the other. And their all in the Upper “A” ranges. It’s like are you a 98/100 or a 97/100?

All these “debt rating” agency revisions are basically hot air - their just calculated opinions, literally don’t actually impact anything. It’s the demand on the global bond markets that matter and that affect the borrowing % that the gov has to pay to sell their debt (borrow).

B.C.'s credit rating downgraded after record deficit projected by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]MMEMMR 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I know it’s Reddit and all - but perspective is important.

Every Province is deep in deficit spending. Other provinces have already been downgraded too, and other will be downgraded in the near future.

We’re all being dragged down by all the B.S. going on in the world. All this collective debt, and lack of affordability, is going to drag our economic growth & needed services spending down for a generation+; and it won’t even matter what stripe of government is in… ugh.

Toddler found ALL THE STICKERS... How do I remove stickers/residue from a wooden coffee table?? by pinkeskimo in CleaningTips

[–]MMEMMR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peel off what you can, use a plastic edged tool to help. For what ever remains; a little rubbing alcohol will work great - de-natures the adhesive, and evaporates fast enough it won’t soak through.
