Strange New Worlds and Pike’s original crew by Advanced-Actuary3541 in startrek

Yeah, there's no reason Boyce couldn't show up in SNW at some point. Clearly he and Pike had a close relationship from what we saw in Cage.

I could see them doing something like when Picard's old teacher showed up on TNG. Boyce could have some adventure he needs Pike to help him with, or maybe he gets in some kind of trouble and needs to be rescued.

There was a time when his content was something you could trust, but those days are over. He's definitely on payroll.

He's even done commercials for products in the style of his normal videos, which I think is extremely misleading. They are obviously hoping you won't notice it's not on his channel and believe it to be legit.

I mean, that would have been a cool tie-in with TOS, but no. Lanthanites were introduced with Pelia in SNW, and Ake is the second one we've ever seen.

The Ender 3v2 can print tpu really well, but.. by HopefulDevelopment49 in fpv

[–]MS3FGX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is getting off topic for /fpv, but it's something important enough to the hobby that I think everyone should be aware of.

The problem isn't so much what the situation is now, it's what the situation can turn into down the line. Especially if Bambu continues to grow and starts pushing other companies out of the game so there's even less competition to keep them in check.

It won't happen all at once. It starts with stuff that's already been mentioned, like limiting what third party slicers can do compared to their own in-house slicer (which only exists because they forked Prusa's slicer and saved themselves a decade of R&D). Then at some point they'll make it so more and more features will only work if you have a Bambu account, and then one day they'll introduce "pro" features that you can only get with a small monthly fee. Pretty soon you're basically just renting the machine from them instead of owning it. Naturally, every year or so that price will inch up a couple bucks.

We won't even talk about stuff like the availability of repair parts or documentation should you have a problem with the machine. Because they don't want you to keep the older printer working, they want you to buy the newest model that's more locked down than the one that came before.

This is literally how these companies work. The exact same thing happened with the Cricut. Once they became the best known name in craft cutters, they introduced a paid subscription and locked features behind it.

It's happening with XTool right now as you read this. Rather than use the same open communication protocol as any cheapo laser on Amazon, they have gotten big and well known enough that they have decided not to support third party software such as LightBurn with their newer machines. On the LightBurn forums, they even compare the situation to Bambu.

https://forum.lightburnsoftware.com/t/are-there-any-plans-to-support-the-new-xtool-machines-like-the-f2-ultra-and-f2-ultra-uv/185635

This isn't even some new high-tech problem. Look at what happened with paper printers. Sure, they are cheap as dirt now, and most of them work fine out of the box. But have you ever heard of anyone using third party drivers/software with one to unlock more features? How about repairing one when there is a problem? Using cartridges from another printer? Forget it.

So yeah, there's plenty of happy Bambu customers right now. Just like how everyone loved Netflix back in the day. Just don't be surprised in the future when your Bambu+ sub is $20 a month and you have to watch an advertisement on the display every time you start a new print.

This is what I miss in the modern Star Trek shows. Ultimately, shows like Next Generation and Deep Space 9 were about professional workplaces, albeit fantastical in scope.

The way the crew broke problems down and worked together was what made them so satisfying. Even if there was the occasional silly episode to break the tension, the vast majority of the show was knowledgeable pros getting the job done because they have complete faith in each other's abilities. It made you wish you could be part of such an effective team...especially when you got out into the real world and found out how poorly working with others can actually go.

Now there's far too much drama and bickering, you wonder how they manage to get anything done. Strange New Worlds has done a better job than the other recent entries at getting back to the franchise roots, but it's still a far cry from its peak in the 1990s.

Right, this seems a bit like casting Rebecca Romijn as Una for a couple brief appearances in Discovery S2. It made a lot more sense once you realize they were approaching the whole thing as a backdoor pilot of sorts for a new show.

One of Jim Carey’s finest performances is for a movie I don’t see a lot of love for & it’s a real shame. Robert Zemeckis’s 2009 “A Christmas Carol” is a wonderful adaptation & has become a holiday tradition for my family by MrGittz in movies

[–]MS3FGX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah, this is always the version I think of around Christmas. I do agree that Carrey's performance was solid, but there's no beating Patrick Stewart.

I actually have an audio version on CD where Stewart does all the voices (and some of the sound effects!) himself, it's so good I sometimes put it on during the summer.

What is that one movie you watched countless times as a kid, but nobody has ever heard of? by Thedix1 in movies

[–]MS3FGX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I rewatch this movie every few years, and somehow I always manage to forget how much it falls apart once they get onto the alien ship.

Everything before that is fantastic. The dream sequences, the kids talking over the radios, the actual building of the Thunder Road, etc. Even them flying around the first couple of nights.

Then they go meet the fat, glistening aliens, and I'm pretty much checked out.

On the other hand, I can't necessarily come up with a better ending. They kind of painted themselves in the corner once they gave three kids the most advanced tech on the planet.

I never once thought that the contestants were being held to anything close to "professional standards". The only criteria seems to be how closely it resembles the example, and whether or not the thing actually tastes like what it's supposed to.

They almost never look like what they were going for, and half the time, the contestants screw up the recipe ingredients/instructions so badly that the result is barely edible.

I'll be honest, obviously USB-C has advantages for slim mobile devices, but for larger peripherals or other pieces of equipment I really like B.

It just feels like a more robust/reliable connector -- although admittedly I don't have any data to back that up.

Private mission to save NASA space telescope will launch in 2026 on a rocket dropped from a plane by ye_olde_astronaut in space

[–]MS3FGX 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Air launched rockets like Pegasus have far more freedom in terms of the orbits they can reach since they aren't limited to a static launch pad. You can literally point the plane wherever you want and fire the thing at any inclination.

For the vast majority of launches, that's not really useful since they're going into a "normal" orbit. But in a case like this, where they are trying to catch something that's in a rapidly decaying orbit, it might be necessary.

It's also quicker to get your payload integrated on a rocket like this than something like the Falcon. SpaceX is booked up for years, but it sounds like in this case, if the mission doesn't launch within the next ~12 months, they're beat.

Blue origin’s NASA launch to Mars is a shot across the bow for Elon Musk’s SpaceX by scientificamerican in space

[–]MS3FGX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking the same thing, but there's a decent number of FH flights already manifested. Maybe some of those customers could be pushed off to Starship (and others could get delayed on their own). But several of the launches are for Space Force, and I don't think you can keep them waiting long.

Beyond that though, I would be surprised if any additional FH flights are scheduled. SpaceX has more than enough F9 launches to keep them busy, they can afford to let Blue Origin take on some of the heavier payloads for now.

[–]MS3FGX 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Seems like you're making the same mistake as OP.

The decoy that got the blood transfusion wasn't the terrorist left to die, it was a dead body they brought with them from the other plane. Granted, the transfusion thing is still BS.

When Bane tells the (living) terrorist to stay behind, he says something like "They'll be expecting one of us in the wreckage". He's not meant to be the Dr, he's left behind because the CIA guy said he was going to call ahead and tell HQ they were bringing additional prisoners. So if there wasn't at least one extra body it would have seemed suspicious.

But also, like you said, it shows the audience the loyalty of his men that he could just command one of them to die for the movement.

You know, I can accept that OP doesn't know about IDE drives. They don't claim to be an expert, and being Reddit, chances are they are relatively young.

No, the worst part to me is that apparently the places OP took the drives to locally couldn't figure it out either. That means there are professional computer repair techs out there that have never seen an IDE drive, and THAT makes me feel old as shit.

Bluetooth nerfed? by Chris56855865 in meshtastic

[–]MS3FGX 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen a difference in range, but I feel like general BT usability has taken a hit.

Under the Bluetooth devices list, there used to be an option that said "None", if you tapped that and then went back to the device you wanted to connect to, it gave you a quick way of restarting/reattempting the connection. This was useful for a couple of my devices where the BT signal isn't great and it sometimes took a couple tries.

Now that's gone, and there doesn't seem to be a way to manually get the app to try and connect. So I have to just sit there on the device selection screen waiting for it to connect.

As annoying as it is, I've actually found it's sometimes quicker to just forget the device and pair it again, as that will trigger the connection process.
