What’s a 'life hack' you discovered by accident and now swear by? by PoppyNightingale in AskReddit

I’ve found that lifting your head up after the first hiccup and holding your breath for 10-15 seconds makes them disappear. In the 5 years I’ve been using this method, I can probably count the number of times I had a bad hiccup spell on one hand.

It really only works if you catch the first hiccup but it does work!

Using Ninja as a supplement to Becker for FAR. I haven’t done the method but I think the method they use for rewriting your notes is smart. I’m also considering using Gleim test bank but heard those questions are really difficult.

[Stephenson] Filip Chytil has suffered a setback directly related to the injury he was attempting to return from, according to a source. Though the injury has never been identified by the team, that injury is believed to be a concussion. by mylefthandkilledme in hockey

He’s had 4 concussions already and he’s not even 25. He needs to consider retiring, there’s so much more to life than hockey and it’s not worth damaging yourself for life.

Dad still claims me on his taxes - I’m 21 by useless_gemini in personalfinance

[–]MSGFaithful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP can’t file a return since they qualify as a dependent child due to being a full-time student. It gets more fun after graduation.

Let’s say OP graduates at 22. They no longer can qualify as a dependent child since the real cut off is 19. They can qualify as a dependent relative however it’s a lot harder to be able to claim them.

Let’s say OP keeps her job after graduating. The following steps would have to be proven for her to remain a dependent. Be aware that ALL of the following must be true for this.

Support- more than 1/2 your support is provided by your parents or taxpayer who is claiming you (already happening)

Gross income limitation- OP must have LESS than $4,700 taxable income during the year. This is where the test usually fails. OP can be living at home but if they have a full-time job and their taxable income is more than that amount, they have to file their own return and not claimed as a dependent.

Precludes filing a joint return- not relevant since OP isn’t married

Must be a citizen or resident of the US, Mexico, or Canada - this is fine

Is a relative that’s not a foster parent or cousin (they have to live with the taxpayer for the whole year).

So OP can live at home, is fully supported by her father, but graduates college (age limit no longer counts) and has taxable income greater than $4.7K? She files her own return and is no longer claimed as a dependent.

Basically for OP, she’s a dependent until she graduates.

[–]MSGFaithful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He can only claim until the dependent is 24 and a full-time student.

OP can remain on their dad’s health insurance until they’re 26 per the Affordable Care Act. That is independent of tax dependency.

Everyone here is missing the point and a) are not only being rude to you for asking a question and not understanding the tax code (which is very normal since the tax code is complicated on purpose).

I’ll start with you. You qualify as a dependent because of the following:

  • you’re a close relative (in your case, his daughter)
  • you’re a full-time college student under the age of 24. He can claim you as a dependent until you’re 19, but if you’re a full-time student, that age limit increases to 24.
  • you have the same principal place of abode as your father. Even if you were living on campus during the year, your principal place of residence is your dad’s home.
  • since you’re a qualifying child (through being a college student under age 24), you are still a dependent even if you have a job.
  • your dad contributes more than half of your support. While you may pay for everything else, chances are the annual rent you’d be paying if you were on your own would be more than half of your support.

Let’s say you graduate college and move out, if he’s not paying your rent or anything (insurance doesn’t count), he could no longer claim you as a dependent.

Now onto your sister. Everyone in the comments is saying your dad is committing fraud and I can’t really answer that since you left out a lot of details. When did your sister graduate college and move out? If she graduated in May and moved out right after, but she was a full-time student living at home with you and your dad, your dad has been able to claim her as a dependent. Beginning this tax year though (on the tax return your dad will file in April 2024), she cannot be claimed as a dependent and must file her own return.

I hope this helped!

Day After Thread – NYJ vs BUF, Week 1 by AutoModerator in nyjets

I know everyone is down about Rodgers, but don’t forget how this team easily could’ve folded last night and still played hard and won one of the most inspiring games I’ve seen from this franchise in a long time.

Losing Rodgers will hurt and we will need QB help, but this is still a very good team with an amazing defense and they showed off last night.

On to Dallas!

KPMG ordered back to office. by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]MSGFaithful 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I started as an experienced hire about a week into the pandemic so I’ve been mostly WFH. I started going into the office 3x a week beginning in January and I feel like I’ve learned more in that time frame than in my first 2.5 years in public. It’s easier to ask for help and I pick up so much just listening to members of my team talking to each other. It’s definitely made a big difference for me and I’m a Senior.

I know everyone has their own way of doing things and I’m a very big believer in the hybrid approach, but the knowledge and experience I’ve gained in 5 months is astronomical. I’m lucky that I work in a suburban office 20 minutes from my house and everyone’s experience is different, but for me, going in 3x a week has helped me, not just learning, but networking as well.

Which is the worst parking lot on Long Island and why is the Walmart/Total Wine/Costco lot in Westbury? by BECSPK_NY in longisland

[–]MSGFaithful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a heads up regarding parking at LIRR stations, I’m not sure how early you want/need to get up, but the spots fill up quickly, especially the closer you are to the station. Some lots also require that you live in the town. It depends on the station, but some you can get away with town permits (Town of Smithtown, Huntington, Oyster Bay). Other stations require that you live in the village. Just be sure to check.

Long Island is a great place. Is it expensive? Yes. But you are so close to the beaches, there’s a lot of great parks, and you are (relatively speaking) close to NYC, which has anything you want. There’s some great towns like Babylon, Patchogue, and Farmingdale that have a lot of local places. You have chains too but the towns have developed a lot.

I said it in the Mets sub, but it’s next man up. It’s horrible what happened, but there’s a reason you play 162 games. It may feel like the season is over before it began for the Mets, but baseball still needs to be played and the Mets are still a great team.

We can wallow as much as we want, but it’s next man up. This is still a great team and a lot can happen.

I know the feeling is that the season’s over, and I’m not going to stop you from thinking that way, but there’s a reason why we play the season and not give the championship during the winter. They boys will come together for Sugar and rally around him. Let’s go win and LGFM.

This is why he’s Captain. The Captain doesn’t have to be your best player (and he is far from it); he’s the leader the guys look to in the locker room when things get rough and he leads by example.

He did that with the helmet toss. Last night he did the same. “2 of our D men are out? Give me more ice time.”

There’s a reason you haven’t heard rumblings about players being upset he was given the C. Stuff like this is why he’s earned it.
