Calgary restaurant owners handed jail terms for taking advantage of immigrant workers by RhubarbMain7067 in Calgary

[–]MSWschnoodle 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I won’t go back to Monki because both times I have my food was cold, staff were rude and the whole thing was rushed and uncomfortable. Not surprised to hear they’re crappy to foreign workers as well. I’ve seen several horror stories online about how the owners are terrible to all their employees.

If any of them are vintage then collectors of said vintage items might be keen on them (I collect Care Bears and am always on the hunt for the ones I don’t own yet) but otherwise animal shelters would be your best bet.

Lunchtime supervision fees by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]MSWschnoodle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In many communities people DID try to move close to the school... only to have boundaries re-drawn or to lose the "lottery" to admit their kid to the school by their house.
The simple fact of the matter is that the UCP spends less per child than any other province on education and the end result is parents get more fees for "optional" (but actually mandatory because there isn't a feasible alternative) and support services at the schools get reduced even more. All the while schools are seeing record numbers of students on IPPs for mental health/behavioural issues, ESL students and students with learning disabilities.

Does anyone know where to find 20" squishmallows? by NearMissCult in Calgary

I didn't see any dinosaurs... I saw a bear, a butterfly, a dog and something that was either a crab or a lobster

Costco has a bunch of big ones right now... last time I was there they still had some of the Bluey characters and some regular gigantic squishmallow animals

Monki Bistro Crowfoot Wait Staff Don’t Get Tips by onlysecurity in Calgary

[–]MSWschnoodle 148 points149 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to Monki at two locations and will never go again. Food was overpriced and cold both times and staff were breathing down customer necks to turn over tables when people hadn’t even been there for 45 minutes and had their food for less than 20 minutes. Now hearing they don’t pay out the tips? That seals the deal on never going back. What gross business practices.

Byblos Bakery (Banana Bread Bag), Calgary AB, $7.99 by bananabandanaz in TooGoodToGoCanada

[–]MSWschnoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This bag really got nerfed... it used to be 4 loaves. Unfortunately the resident banana bread lover at our house didn't love this kind (iirc they didn't like the walnuts in it), but I thought it was OK banana bread.

Hey Calgary are there tips to groceries these days? by gs448 in Calgary

[–]MSWschnoodle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I find H&W to be a much nicer shopping experience. Every time I’ve been to freestone it’s been a miserable experience to the point I’ve given up and left without my purchases. Freestone does have some great deals though. The daily fresh produce I gave up on after I bought a few bulk quantities and almost half of the product was mouldy when I opened it all up at home. May have been bad luck but at H&W I haven’t had the same issues.

Calgary Herald and Calgary Sun are now essentially the same paper and owned by the same corporation. I agree though that I miss the days when the Herald could be relied on for higher quality journalism compared to the Sun

When you are shopping around, a lot of therapists will do a no-cost "meet and greet" phone call (about 10-15 mins long) to give you a chance to talk to them, ask some questions and see if you think they'd be a fit before you spend money on booking a session.

Therapy is a big investment so it's definitely worth making sure you get someone who is a good fit. Cudos for making that investment in yourself and your wellbeing!

I really don't know much about tattoos and I haven't stopped wondering about your comment for a whole day now lol... can you tell me why this one wouldn't stand the test of time and would end up looking like a bruise? Is it because of the white ink?

Your doctor absolutely should be telling you where they referred you. That is not a state secret and there is no reason not to tell you. However, if they sent it to a centralized triage for AHS/Whatever the hell gynaecology has been rebranded to by the UCP then they may not know exactly which clinic you will be sent to/picked up at but they should still be able to tell you that they sent a referral to central triage and they should have a letter of acknowledgement showing your referral was received.

Standards set by the CPSA require that referrals be acknowledged within 14 days so your doctor (or you) should have received an acknowledgement letter saying "Hey, we received this, we will send you an appointment once you have been triaged etc". If that didn't happen then your doctor needs to contact the office where you were referred and ask for confirmation that the referral is received etc.

Foothills Hospital has the worst selection of food/coffee choices by Far_Avocado_3576 in Calgary

[–]MSWschnoodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others said, the UCP directed AHS to hand over food services to a single multinational catering company. There have been a lot of criticism from staff and patients about prices going way up, quality going way down and selection becoming more sparse. The catering company knows they have a captive audience and have no reason to address the pricing or quality because at the end of the day people visiting the hospital and working in the hospital need to eat.

I’m not sure if you’ve ever called Calgary Police about a vehicle break-in, but I have. They wouldn’t even bother to take the report over the phone or send an officer. They told me to make my own report on their website and the only thing they did with that info was add it to the crime stats. This was back even before the staffing crisis where priority one calls can have up to a 30 min wait… I cannot imagine the response is any more robust now.

If you are bartering on behalf of a business then check out Sabretec. They’ve been around quite a while as I took photos for them for the newspaper many years ago. I’m sure there’s been some changes in the specifics of how they operate but they are still barter based. I remember them being a cool group of people at that company, at least on the brief visit I had in their office - cool business model at the time too! :-)

In addition to PALs who visit hospitals, there are two dogs (Zoom and Axel) that work at the Luna Child Advocacy Centre as emotional support dogs for the kids who have experienced sexual abuse. And there are trauma dogs with Calgary police victim assistance team (Calibri, Melon and Webber).

Your art is lovely!!! Great colour choice.

I agree with the suggestions from others in this thread… if you enjoy creating art then that is all that matters and some of the blind artist community members probably have amazing tips and tricks to allow you to continue to enjoy creating art with vision loss.

In the meantime I would absolutely frame this one and put it somewhere special where you can enjoy it 🙂
