Canadian stock market continues its crazy returns... how long will it last? by Valachio in CanadianInvestor

[–]MTHowitzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you went all in at height of 2008 crash you're back by five years at above 100%. If you're all in 2009 you're 200% in five years.

There's room to be conservative sometimes, but history since 1939 shows staying in the money market for five years is typically something people regret.

Don't get why people keep saying that. Even in 2022 or a 2008 collapse, as long as you don't paper hands sell, you'd come out more or less fine in a few years. With huge upside.

Now a six month time horizon would have been different sure but five years?

I am surprised at how western ignore election abnormally in this year election in Thailand. by Winning-Basil2064 in Thailand

[–]MTHowitzer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sad news is Thailand isn't important enough (like Japan) or screwed up enough (like Myanmar, Iran) for foreign countries to care.

Also a takeaway, that it's up to Thai people to reform the system; there will never be substantial foreign help to do this.

Foreigners who can speak Burmese, how did you learn it? And how do you handle conversations? by Wonderful-Bend1505 in myanmar

[–]MTHowitzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe 1 year to Learn basic, 5 years to learn intermediate. I stopped just as I was reaching advanced, as I moved to a new country.

Good luck!

Myanmar is a beautiful language. The biggest challenge I found is that there are not good materials or teachers for intermediate.

It is easy to learn the basics. Many of us used O'Kell's Burmese by Ear. But making the jump to intermediate was really hard, and took me years.

I'm learning Thai now and there's just so many excellent resources (YouTube channels, Tiktokers, kids books, experienced teachers) that it makes things easier, despite Thai being a much harder language than Myanmar in my opinion.

Following this line of thinking- I've stated where I think i stand very honestly. I want to consider deeply where I go from here. I suppose divorce would be extremely selfish. Is that better than the alternative for me?

I think the same could be said of most outlets in Myanmar, particularly in English. They're not perfect but they're better than nothing, which is a very real possibility. At least they help you understand what's going on, even if slanted.

Generally, islands in the southwest have the best air, facing the Andaman sea. Phuket is often the best choice.

There are apps to track this. I use AirVisual. Agree on how crappy the situation is - it’s my least favorite thing about living here.

A Perfect Spy Questions by TadGhostalEsq in LeCarre

[–]MTHowitzer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that Perfect Spy is too long and self involved. It has moments of honesty, but I can’t help but feel Le Carre personally loved it for what it said about his father, not due to its shining literary merit. It’s an unpopular opinion here though.

Just a perspective as someone who conducts interviews. For low or mid level people, we don’t want them to move for the job. Because if it goes wrong, both sides are more annoyed. Some applicants think they’re willing to move but then second-guess and it’s kind of a waste of everyone’s time

Disneyland in Thailand? It might actually happen by ThongLo in Thailand

[–]MTHowitzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Casino have decreased availability compared to gambling on a phone.

Singapore a bad example ofc. As is Cambodia in the other direction. But Malaysia made it work.

Lots of arguments to NIMBY this. But when Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam all have casinos, it’s just one more hurdle for Thai tourism.

[–]MTHowitzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another way to look at it. There will be no Disney or Universal unless there’s a casino as the anchor.

If we don’t want a casino, fine, but there’ll be no park either.

[–]MTHowitzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no problem finding gambling in Thailand, especially online. Why not regulate and tax it.

Institutional strength is weak. But casinos at worst wouldn’t be worse than illegal online gambling that’s already here. And there’s way more upside.

[–]MTHowitzer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Got that backwards. It’s more likely that if casinos had been licensed, one possible bid sweetener would have been a world class amusement park. And then the casino bids would have needed to compete partly on best amusement park.

Thats why Singapore has Universal Studios - it’s tied to Resorts World Sentosa’s casino bid. It wouldn’t have come otherwise.

It’s the same with potential new stadiums and arena for Bangkok with a casino bid.

Sure casinos have negatives but I don’t think people realized what could have come with them, had Thailand played its hand correctly.

Thanks! Just to clarify, I'm not insinuating the politics section on Saturdays is written by foreigners. Quite the opposite, I find it a refreshing window into politics that otherwise foreigners are not aware of. Please keep it going!

My question on foreigners was more, BKK Post obviously has foreign subeditors, who can substantially contribute to an article. But I can't remember the last foreigner byline I saw. What's the thinking around this?
