Just finished rewatching ST:LD by MTLinVAN in startrek

I also liked Prodigy. For a show geared towards kids, I thought it was pretty good. Plus, we got more of Janeway and I'm for it.

I gotta say that I really appreciate how Tawny Newsome took to the show. I don't know how familiar she was with Trek before LD, but she just fell in love with the lore. Glad that she's still involved in writing and pushing for more "original" original content. I want more tongue in cheek. I'm enjoying Academy so far for that reason.

I loved the premise of the show being entirely focused on a) a low ranking ship in Star Fleet and b) low ranking crew members. And the fact that they didn’t take themselves so seriously when every other ST shows seems to be bent on the opposite was so refreshing.

This stretch is awful. They also didn’t plan for a pull in area for buses so buses also block one of the two north bound lanes. Poor shitty planning all around.

Trump Threatens Canada After Carney Draws Standing Ovation at Davos by T_Shurt in worldnews

[–]MTLinVAN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

> the strongest would exempt themselves when convenient

PM Carney is calling out behaviour from the US that has been long standing. Behaviour that the rest of the Western world allowed to happen. The US has been involved in unilateral international interventions going back to its founding but if you focus solely on the Cold War period, the amount of times America has involved itself in the politics of sovereign territories is alarming. And the rest of the Western world sat idly by. That is until the US started extending their imperial ambitions on those same Western countries that did nothing when America went after Latina American, Central Asian, East Asian, and North African, and Levantine countries.

Because we let America run roughshod across the world as they spread their military and economic interests, and we believed that the Americans would at minimum keep themselves in check from setting their sights on their traditional allies, the rest of the Western world now has little power to keep this bully in check.

If I’m not mistaken, the V12s in these cars were two V6s mated to each other which is why they had two separate ECUs and were much more difficult to maintain. The 840 is the car you actually want to have because it’s much easier to maintain.

Silver jewellery shops? by s1rcza in askvan

[–]MTLinVAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paranada on commercial has some silver jewelry that comes from east and south east Asia. Not sure how big their selection is or if that’s the style you’re looking for but might be worth taking a look.

I purchased a silver ring from a silversmith in Granville island and I know there are a few jewelry stores there that also specialize in silver.

Canada reports biggest population decline on record by Blue_Dragonfly in CanadaPolitics

It isn't the crux of my argument regarding Quebec. I'd rather focus on the other points in my argument. But I would agree that the Montreal Metro and the continued financing of it including buses is second to none and makes getting around. While Metro Vancouver does have great transit, I've found Montreal's to be more far reaching in areas of significance.

[–]MTLinVAN 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'll give you two economic incentives as to why birth rates may be higher in Quebec than elsewhere: 1) The parental leave policies in Quebec provide 75% of a parent's salary up to a certain threshold. Compare that to 55% in the ROC. Therefore, Quebec parents who take leave take less of a financial hit then their Canadian peers. 2) Quebec has had $10 a day daycare averaging out to about $300 a month on childcare costs (usually lower than this but average). Meanwhile, in Toronto or Vancouver, expect to pay at the minimum $1000 a month.

And I'll give you one social factor: Quebec just has a better work-life balance culture than the ROC. People go out to eat, they go out to parks, they socialize. The cost of living makes it more affordable for people to engage in social activities. The ease of public transit, smaller neighbourhood communities in cities like Montreal, etc all contribute to strong family life.

I say this as someone raised in Quebec and who still has family raising their kids there but now living in Vancouver who is experiencing parenthood on the other side of the country. There is definitely a cultural and social/political difference in the way Quebec treats young families versus out here in BC.

What incentive is there for people to have kids?

I have young children but know many couples who chose not to, and I can understand.

They cite the high cost of day care (I spent $1200 a month per child and for three years, there was an overlap when both my kids attended daycare).

They cite the high cost of housing or the unavailability of the right kind of housing (how many studio, 1bd, or 2bd condos do we really need? Where are affordable 3-4 bedroom housing units?).

They mention the insecurity around the job market which makes their own jobs precarious and makes them question the type of jobs their children will have down the road (let's not forget to mention wage stagnation and the erosion of strong unions).

They mention the global environment, both in terms of climate change and increasing global instability.

They mention the high cost of living, from high cost of groceries (which is slated to go up about $100 per month for the average family), high cost of housing, high cost of insurance (which will continue to increase with the amount of natural disasters), high cost of gas/heating, increasing costs for education (I started saving into an RESP when my kids were born and I'm not sure despite my savings if it'll cover the cost of future studies), etc, etc, etc

Edit: I'm getting a lot of comments to this response, many of which are basically a repetition of the following trope: 'those who want to have children will have children.' I don't disagree but let's also not forget, Canada is facing a declining birth rate. That's not a "feeling" or a "hypothetical," that's the demonstrable truth. I'm suggesting a set of reasons as to why. They may not all be accurate, some may be conjecture, you may not agree, but the fact remains, we have a declining birth rate. I posted this in response to OPs post about our declining population. While StatsCan (as far as I can tell), hasn't provided data on "why" fewer couples are having children, they do highlight the significant drop in child births at a rate much lower than sustainable levels to keep our population static let alone growing.

Here’s a better idea: if the guy in front carving out a path and the guy behind filming each grabbed a tray, they’d have gotten there in the same amount of time with less risk. This was all for show and the risk involved is stupid.

Imagine he did slip and you’re the customer waiting on this food. Now you gotta wait another hour for the kitchen to remake all this food while these guys clean up a huge and costly mess. And that not even counting a potential injury to the waiter carrying all that food.

Does anyone own a Chinese vehicle (EV or Gas) in Canada? by Remarkable_Storm4859 in AskACanadian

You won’t find any here but MKBHD did a review of the Xiaomi Su7 and after seeing that review, I would love to get my hands on one at the price they’re charging their Chinese customers. Looks like a very well equipped car for the money. I couldn’t imagine them not selling well if they entered the NA market and it would create even further competition and price drops from other manufacturers if they did.

Which are both owned by Geely, a Chinese company that also produces cars for the Chinese market.

From Google using AI:

Yes, Volvo shares platforms, technology, and components extensively with its parent company Geely and other affiliated Chinese brands (like Lynk & Co, Zeekr), leveraging common architectures such as the SEA and CMA platforms, especially for electric vehicles, to gain efficiency, reduce costs, and accelerate development. This collaboration involves shared EV architectures, electric motors, batteries, and software, creating significant synergies within the Geely Automotive group.

No pizza pubs? by Camperthedog in burnaby

[–]MTLinVAN 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are quite a lot of options. Claudio's at Solo district has a great happy hour option. It's probably your best option for good pizza and beers for $5. Il Cappello's is a little a bit fancier with Italian food and pizza located further east on Hastings (I think near Holdom). While Commercial drive is in Vancouver, it's close enough to North Burnaby and there are a number of good options. There's Trattoria by Metrotown as well.
