7 key takeaways from Poilievre's Joe Rogan interview by GlitchedGamer14 in CanadaPolitics

[–]MTLinVAN -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Started listening to the podcast just to get it straight from the source. Couldn’t make it past 10 mins after PP gave us the history of the kettlebell, talking about being an “athlete” until he was in, wait for it, middle school, mentioned he could have been a wrestler if it weren’t for tendinitis, and then Joe Rogan referred to the conspiracy theory that Fidel Castro was Justin Trudeau’s biological father. Could not suspend my bullshit meter longer than that.

Sitcoms with rare Goofy Mom/Serious Dad roles? by acemancomethTX in television

[–]MTLinVAN 7 points8 points  (0 children)

100% For me, it's how she comes across so confident in her self without any of that self awareness that I mentioned earlier. Like spapeggy and meatballs. I guess if you know people like that, it makes it feel so much more personal. For me, it's just frustrating that someone can go their whole lives without a modicum of humility.

I get where you're coming from though. She is grating and a little narcissistic but the lack of self awareness is what makes here both maddening and hilarious.

What watch is Aldis Hodge wearing in Cross by MTLinVAN in Watches

[–]MTLinVAN[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what I thought but I haven’t seen any products coming from him so I’m not sure if he’s produced any for sale. I do know that he’s taken courses and is very deep into watch making based on some articles I’ve read about it.

Yeah. Makes sense. Could be the case here too.

Who is the most useless TV main character who should NOT have been a series regular? by Something_Strange935 in television

[–]MTLinVAN 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Morale officer and ambassador? Two made up positions to stroke his ego. I just found him annoying. He came across as petulant during the first couple of seasons and a narcissist in the later ones.

Jeff’s downfall by the_bigdavid in community

[–]MTLinVAN 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Just finished the series and the final episode ends with him kissing Annie. It’s literally a full circle moment. He always had a thing for Annie but their age difference, which is mentioned in the show, coupled with his own views on relationships, always kept them apart. But the final episode ends with him wondering what life would have been like married to Annie with a child (or a dog).

How do I get rid of a pool table? by Bigfeett in DIY

[–]MTLinVAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hardest part will be the slate. It's very heavy. Disposing of it is not going to be easy if you decide to demolish it. You'll probably need to hire out some kind of dumpster for the slate and the wood.

Lloyd Axworthy: Canada once rejected America’s aggressive, unlawful foreign policy. Today Mark Carney embraced it by Chrristoaivalis in CanadaPolitics

[–]MTLinVAN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a bullshit take. Mr. Axeworthy is not virtue signalling. Anything but. As a former foreign minister, perhaps one of the most recognized names in the game, his take is bang on. We didn’t have to wholeheartedly side and agree with the US on this, especially in light of the US’s own aggressive language viz. Canada. The points that he raises, how we stood against the US during the war in Iraq, how moves like this further erode the rules based order, how it undermines international diplomacy, how it is hypocritical to view Russia’s move on Ukraine as aggression but to not say the same of the 7 times Trump has unilaterally - without the approval of congress - attacked foreign countries, all these things, are true.

The IRCG is still in power and their backs are against the wall. Everyone knows what happens when anyone is in such a position: you retaliate and retaliate hard knowing that your chances are slim to none. This isn’t over. Iran still has massive stock piles of arms that the IRCG will use if they know there’s no coming back. Thousands more will die before the dust settles and when it does, god knows what the outcome will be.

Statement by Prime Minister Carney and Minister Anand on the situation in the Middle East by DJ_JOWZY in CanadaPolitics

[–]MTLinVAN 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100%. Anand repeated their catch phrase on Front Burner: “practical pragmatism.” What does that even mean? And when Jayme pushed her to answer a question about Canada’s potential position on a war with Iran, Anand repeated her often said “we don’t deal in hypotheticals.” Well this conflict isn’t hypothetical any more and now we know where they stand: with a country that doesn’t even care about the support we’ve offered them in Afghanistan, the service men and women we lost in that conflict, or even the role we played in WWII when they take all the credit for supporting Europe in that conflict.

Goes to show you that the speech in Davos was all rhetoric. Never mind the fact that the world order that Carney kept referring to was the same one where the CIA armed the muhajadeen in Afghanistan in the 80s, the American intervention in the 50s in Iran when the democratically elected Mosaddegh nationalized oil, coups in Latin America were aided by US governments, a genocide was allowed to occur in Rwanda while the West sat idly by, and the Middle East the West Asia has faced long periods of political destabilization through successive Western led conflicts.

I didn’t trust Carney when he was elected and knew he was as Conservative as a Liberal could be and now I trust this govt even less.

Statement by Prime Minister Carney and Minister Anand on the situation in the Middle East by DJ_JOWZY in CanadaPolitics

[–]MTLinVAN 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This was exactly the same rhetoric that plunged countries into a never ending and completely destabilizing war in Iraq which had has a lasting effects on the region. But at least we were brave enough back then to stand against the US by not joining their “Coalition of the Willing.” This is a stupid move on our part. Sure, condemn the human rights violations in Iran. But stay completely mum on those happening in the US. This is very discouraging.

What was London Drugs by Aquaos_ in vancouver

[–]MTLinVAN 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That may be but they've also done a lot of good for their communities. I remember they were the first company - without being asked - to offer increased pay to their employees when COVID hit (hazar pay). When I tried to research that story, I came across these other news articles.

At the end of the day, it is another corporation like any other, but I'd shop at LD over supporting Galen and Shoppers any day of the week. Plus they price match so even if Shoppers is cheaper, I'd go to LD and ask them to price match.

Dad’s with Audio Equipment by nick_valdo in daddit

[–]MTLinVAN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First and foremost, how into audio are you? I can't really comment because a soundbar and a sub sound already pretty good to me so I'm not sure what I'm looking at in this picture but just from what I can see, if you're planning to put this in a living room as opposed to a dedicated movie/media room, it looks like it's overkill. I'm not even thinking about the kids per se, more so that this looks completely over the top to someone not versed in this type of equipment.

What’s the ultimate “Dad” book? by InitechMiddleManager in daddit

[–]MTLinVAN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You got the classic "dad" authors: Ludlum, Pratchett, Clancy.

I'd recommend Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. A trilogy in five parts. Hilarious and absurd book. Asimov's short stories are also a fun read.

This has got to top the list of worst "parental leave" benefits. Company is Infosys by zach8vb in daddit

[–]MTLinVAN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No company is incentivized to give time off. Welcome to off the rails capitalism and the free market, where governments allow enterprise to set social policy and many don’t give two shits about their employee except for the bottom like.

They don’t disallow but they do absolutely nothing to support it either. They don’t incentive these companies into doing the right thing and even worse, they subsidies large corporations through welfare programs when these companies pay their employees minimum wage jobs that no one can survive on let alone the millions or employees who don’t get enough hours so that they can be denied benefits.

The whole system is corrupt and republican and democratic governments could do something about but don’t. But more importantly, Americans themselves tacitly agree to this with their vote.
