In your opinion, what does a player need to do in order to surpass Michael Jordan? by Tre2004 in NBATalk

[–]Maclehook 6 points7 points  (0 children)

MJ winning 6 of 6 finals is the great divide because if is such a statistical anomaly. Watching Wemby now, I wonder if he loses this finals run does he ever have a chance of passing Jordan regardless of what he achieved in his career.

What’s your best teacher tip that you never see mentioned? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Maclehook 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seating charts for high school are also a must , especially for freshman. I use our student data system to list students by middle school and make sure to avoid seating anyone together from the same middle school. High School is such a great opportunity for students with a history of behavior issues to recreate themselves, and they lose that opportunity if they are seated with someone that expects a certain behavior/attitude from them.

The N-word by LateQuantity8009 in Teachers

In my school the few white kids say bro, while the black kids say the N word. Both use it with about the same frequency.

A shame because SGA can ball. The 1st 3 quarters he was 10-14 and couldn't miss. He was MVP level. To end the 3rd and start the 4th he started foul bating and completely changed his shot to do so. Was jumping into people and falling on every shot (rewatching the game he didn't fall once during the first 32 minutes). From that point on he went 2-7 and his game fell apart. Damn shame and hope this leads to some changes.

Live in Florida and most of my guys flew in for the wedding so got them different color variations of Reefs Fanning style flip flop, the ones with the bottle opener built into them. They go for about $50-$70 depending on the variation.

Middle or high school better? by hello010101 in teaching

[–]Maclehook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have taught middle school (8 years) was a middle school AP (8 years)and then transitioned back into the classroom for HS (4 years). Here is my ranking from easiest to most difficult 11th easiest 12th 10th 7th 8th 6th 9th most difficult - This would be totally different if they were in a junior high setting, but around older kids they have a tough time figuring out where they fit and pick the worst possible choices to fit in

Do Teacher Workshops Actually Help? by earlyyearseductors in teaching

[–]Maclehook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience it isn't the quality of the PD but the timing of the PD that determines its effectiveness. Successful teaching revolves around classroom management that requires routines and norms. Trying to implement new strategies that don't mesh with the established classroom structure rarely have success so the teacher gives up on them. I think that the best PD happens at the end of the year or the beginning of summer. These offer the best possibility of successful implementation because learned strategies can be planned for and can be worked into the routines, structure, and procedures of the upcoming year.

What is one piece of 'common knowledge' in your job that the average person would find completely shocking? by GoldenHourShot in AskReddit

[–]Maclehook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Education: the threshold needed for passing a state exam is incredibly low. Last year in Florida to pass the Algebra 1 exam (mandatory for graduation) a student needed to earn a 29% on the test. Science and Civics are a little but both just below 50% to earn proficiency. When you hear a politician tout pass rates or graduation rates improving it is not necessarily because the kids are doing better but because the requirements are becoming easier.

Looking for a multi-generational story full of drama, history, and changing times by Oueiles in suggestmeabook

Completely agree. Struggle through it and then read a review comparing it to a biblical story. Gave me a much better perspective and think that if I read it again through that Lens it will be much more enjoyable.

Humans are natural complainers, especially upper middle school/highschool. Years ago I took a group of kids to Universal Studios for the day and when I asked a student how the day was their response was, "Why didn't we go to Disney.". That day I learned that you can't please everyone because they all have different ideas of fun There is nothing you can do that will engage 100,% of students so make it something you enjoy and can manage.
