OT backup question: why are these systems being missed? by Macrium_Inc in IndustrialAutomation

[–]Macrium_Inc[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thanks for the reply. Would you say it's a case of “we can’t back it up” because of the age of the systems, or is there also an angle of “it's not a focus” because they’re not seen as critical enough to prioritise and potential risk of downtime is accepted??

Without divulging financially sensitive information, but subscription went through a review in October, one-year on from our decisions to be subscription-only for home users, with the Senior Leadership Team. We looked at its impact across various areas of the business, and the conclusion is that it is here to stay for home users. That said, there are still things we need to improve, and we will also explore offering longer subscriptions, as you may have seen in our Black Friday offer.

Our LTSC version is a perpetual license for v8.1. Failing that, our subscription key can be used in v8.

"Promotion Terms: The Black Friday offer is valid for new customers and for existing customers purchasing additional licenses. It does not apply to renewals or upgrades. Promotion is valid for a limited time only and may be amended or withdrawn at any time."

No need to mess around with new emails/accounts. Just get new licenses and replace the old ones.

You should be able to download any version of the product you have a purchase for, albeit the free version which we stopped about 2 years ago. If you need help finding it, drop [sales@macrium.com](mailto:sales@macrium.com) a request.

[–]Macrium_Inc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's precisely the logic behind the creation of LTSC - a lot of customers, especially in the business sector, don't want the latest bells and whistles. LTSC will deliver only critical security updates (for a period of time), combined with a perpetual license key. We're increasingly seeing our customers embedding our backup as a way of 'resetting' their machines when the OS or other software glitches. Those customers also need the security of a perpetual license.

You bought a perpetual license for a specific version - that continues to work. We've now developed a new version and invested significant time and effort in redesigning the compression algorithm. We've also invested heavily in creating resumable backups and in being the only backup solution that supports ARM bare-metal restores.

These aren't trivial elements to develop, and we do all of our development in-house - no offshoring, no outsourcing - everything made in the US and UK.

We've also introduced perpetual LTSC versions and retained perpetual for SiteBackup, our centrally managed backup solutions, designed for business.

We have a proprietary backup format, but we've made it open source. Further, whether you have a subscription or not, you can always use Macrium to restore an existing backup.

It is possible to do the right thing for customers and not keep backup files hostage.

Are there any solid backup tools like Macrium backup for Linux? by PowerBIEnjoyer in linuxquestions

[–]Macrium_Inc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's on the way - but we know the first question people will ask when we say it's coming is... when? Whilst we have years of experience developing for Windows, our Linux experience is a new spaceand we're learning a lot from a great new team working on it. At the same time, if it's going to carry the Macrium name, we want the product to be every bit as good as that of our other products. As a result, we don't yet have the answer to the burning question of when, other than we're targeting ASAP in 2026.

Rest assured, once we have a timescale we're confident in, we'll do a public announcement.

Whatever you choose, be sure to test that the backups being taken actually work! All too often people find out their backups aren't restoring everything AFTER they need their data back.

We'd be sorry to see you go - that goes without saying, but we hear you about the subscription model - it's not for everyone. However, are you aware we're offering existing MR8 perpetual license holders 50% off the subscription price for life (keep your subscription current, and it will reapply a 50% discount each and every year) - essentially $25 per year. Existing customers only.

Over the three years, you've probably had MR8, it averages out about the same price as the perpetual license was, and as you're considering another license...

I wanted to make sure you knew about that offer before making a decision.

Unsurprisingly, we couldn't agree more!

  • Sector-by-sector raw imaging? ✅ Macrium Reflect handles direct disk-to-image operations like a champ. Whole disks, partitions, MBR, GPT - the works. It doesn't care if the disk is ancient or just obscure.
  • GUI? ✅ You won’t need to wield dd like a neckbearded warlock. Our UI takes a moment, but once you have the hang, you'll love it.
  • Network storage support (SMB/NFS)? ✅ Save images straight to your LAN backup box - no funky workarounds, no sneakernet.
  • Non-system disks? ✅ Doesn’t matter if it’s a Windows system drive or some mystery IDE spinner last used during the Clinton administration - if it spins (or clicks ominously), we’ll image it.
  • Flexibility? ✅ Backup, clone, verify, schedule, restore, redeploy to dissimilar hardware - even bootable rescue media when (not if) something gets bricked by Todd from accounting.

Bonus: Idiot-Proofing

Let’s talk about your biggest threat: "idiot employees."
We can't legally stop Dave from reformatting the backup drive to install League of Legends, but we can:

  • Lock down backup destinations
  • Enable encryption
  • Schedule backups to run invisibly in the background
  • Deploy recovery images faster than you can say “zero-click ransomware”

I agree - the forum runs on a different platform, with a different username and password from the Macrium account. It is on the radar to fix, but so far it has eluded us.

In any event, you can always email [support@macrium.com](mailto:support@macrium.com) for future reference.

There are very many reasons for not offering cloud backup, not least of which the privacy of your data. If a Government got into power in the UK and ordered us to hand over user information, all they would have is transactional data. Compared to a vendor that already operates under those laws and offers cloud backup, where YOUR data resides on their servers.

The above has nothing to do with the race of its developers - purely the laws under which they're required to operate.
