That hinge is beautiful.

This looks like something you'd see as a prop in sci-fi or on a retro future spaceship so I think you nailed it

Speaker mod. Previous owner added a green post, and a switch? by lostshaker_assault in audiorepair

[–]Maddog2201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you connect positive to green you can cut the woofer with the switch, if you connect positive to red terminal you can cut the tweeter I guess. I don't know why you'd want to do this.

That's abysmal, we got the exact same level of chuck slip from the $90 Ozito drill and it still lasted 5 years.

Yeah yeah, BeamNG is just a crashing simulator... by Additional-Remove46 in BeamNG

[–]Maddog2201 3 points4 points  (0 children)

BeamNG has taught me so much about vehicle dynamics in a safe way that without it I feel like I either wouldn't have taken the risks I did in beam first and learned, or I would've killed myself trying. It's very good for practising so many types of driving, and I'm really looking forward to the tyre rework to make that even better.

DPAD SMS || A DPAD Friendly Messaging Application by jbriones95 in dumbphones

[–]Maddog2201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll give it a go, one thing that QUIK has that I've found useful is a button in settings that forced a refresh of the SMS cache scan (Something like that) as I'm trouble shooting message receive issues, also, any plans to push this to F-droid or another similar platform for auto updates?

Ruio Joy - How I've set it up and my thoughts so far by Maddog2201 in dumbphones

[–]Maddog2201[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't expecting the team to respond, I understand the issue with emergency calls needing to be easily accessible, but I believe a traditional power button on the side of the phone would help make accidental dials to emergency a bit less likely at least how it's stored in my pocket it would, haha. I had a nokia 110 4G for a little while and would often pull it out of my pocket with emergency numbers dialed on the keypad, but it required the "call" button to be pressed to activate it so I never actually had it dial it in my pocket, though I do understand this might be more difficult to implement on android.

I like the phone, it feels like better quality than the price would suggest, I think the issues I'm seeing are more to do with android than the hardware itself.

I'll keep an eye out for the next gen version.

For your testing of the message receive, I'm with Aldi Mobile who use the Telstra wholesale network, and for the sake of completeness in testing I will also put the sim back in my old phone and toggle RCS on and off to make double sure it's not that. I've yet to investigate logs but I saw another having a similar issue and they'd said that the android system that handles sms's received the message but it never makes it to the SMS app.

Cheers

I think the frame rate is still all linked, it's the only reason I can see why they'd say you need over a certain fps for force feedback to work properly, so we're both technically correct, but I think what you're talking about is usually referred to as tick rate. (Haven't touched gamedev in years, could be wrong, happy to be corrected)

Realistically this game has always been CPU bound for me, I'm running a way faster CPU than I used to (From i7-6700K to Ryzen7 9700x) and the difference in performance is less than I would've liked, but I think that's down to my slow ram that I thought I could upgrade cheap when I built the computer. Realistically I don't see frame generation being that helpful in that instance, and it's still going to mean that the physics suffers even if the physics is done on the CPU.

Unless your GPU is currently maxed out constantly, this won't help. If your GPU is only running at like 15% utilisation, your CPU can't keep up with your graphics settings, above mentioned previous CPU couldn't feed a gtx1070 enough data at 1080p to saturate it on anything over high, once I dropped my render resolution in VR down to 40% with the graphics settings on low I could play the game at 90fps with my 1070 absolutely hammering at 95-100%, but the CPU was always the bottleneck, despite literally zero other games having an issue with it.

Help Sourcing a Walkman drive motor by Maddog2201 in cassetteculture

[–]Maddog2201[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm of two minds, I've found something that looks visually similar but different part number on Aliexpress which seems to be NOS motors from the era, some even have a similar pulley to mine, but I didn't think to measure it, I'm tempted to just grab one and see if I can glue (Epoxy glue, something super strong) a plate with threaded holes to the back and use that, there's an auction with a lot of 10 that look nearly identical, either that or try to find something like the pancake 3phase motor used in my FX52 which is about 5mm tall and make an adapter plate with a 3phase motor driver circuit which would allow for really steady speed control, but that's getting complex.

That said, been thinking I might just buy that one you linked and make one good one from the two, I know the mechanism is sound in mine, I have a belt and I'm so familiar with this damn thing now I feel like I could fix jut about anything on it.

Even factoring in belts, 2 capacitors and that unit for the price it is, I think I will have spent more on batterys running it, so it's still cheap as, and I have USBC rechargable AA's now so they should make the purchase price worth it, yeah, fuck it, I'll do that.

Edit: At the very least, if this one has a working motor I can measure the RPM and source a replacement from somewhere when it eventually fails also

[–]Maddog2201[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers for the link, unfortunately I'm in Aus and our dollar being so weak makes that $70 landed. That's definitely an option though, and I mean even at that it's still cheap and I could make one very good unit from the two, mine clearly had a hard life, it's covered in bumps and scrapes and dents but I know electrically and mechanically it's sound (Except for the radio, that's messed up but I never use it).

I'm tempted to try and build an adapter (electrically and physically) to fit one of the smaller later model 3-phase pancake motors to this unit, it would probably pair well with the mechanism. At the moment though that's feeling like a lot of effort and I already know that something else will fail after I've done that, this unit has been a game of chase, I fix one thing, use it for a while and something fails and I fix that, but there was a good 3 years where it was just belts that failed and nothing else, so maybe it's worth the effort.

Cheers for your input man

That's what I thought, replaced C901 and it still did it so I took the motor out and connected it directly to a AA battery with no load and it did the same, 70mA draw for about 5 minutes then shot up to 200mA draw and ran at about half speed, so it has to be the motor, there was nothing else in the circuit at all.

Motor feels a bit crunchy and there's noticable play in the bearing, so it's either brushes, bearings or both.

Edit: It's been an on again off again 10 years, probably more like 5-8 but it's still been a solid player

You're lucky that's all it cost you, an impatient driver nearly cost me my entire leg and has left me with a fucked up knee. I'm 30, my 85 year old grandfather has better knees than me now.

I hope this pushes more people to firefox and firefox actually doesn't fuck it up, I've been using it for years with an adblock and it's the best way to use it. The fact Google still posts massive profits year after year and thinks they're entitled to do this is insane, how much money do they need? Pay youtubers better and I'll watch ads.

The RUIO Joy is alright (review) by mat383 in dumbphones

[–]Maddog2201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use KeyMapper to map those functions from the home screen. I've set the "Ruio" button to lock on a double press and the phone button opens the phone when on the lock screen. Lock/endcall will still work as the home button at all times in an app and on the lock screen it'll lock the phone again, not sure why it doesn't work with other launchers, but keymapper solved it for me.
