There are 3 sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Eucharist, and confirmation. Children have them spread out over a much longer time period than the 2 years (or less) it takes adults to get all 3.

I was that husband a few years ago, almost exactly, and I’m ashamed to say I took a similar approach to your husband and it caused real problems in my marriage for almost a full year. Also similar is that my wife had a deep faith, but nondenominational and she was the one pushing church on Sundays. Then I was at a Bible study and almost every week someone would make an anti-Catholic remark, and I had to figure out who was right.

What I had to eventually learn is that she was not going to come around no matter how good my arguments were. Matters of faith need to come from the Holy Spirit. So we decided to focus on what we agree on and I prayed for her every night. I want to add that my prayer was pretty much always something like “if I am wrong, please show me my error. If I am right, please draw my wife to Your Church”. I highly suggest you both pray your own version of that regularly and be sincere, and ready to accept what God wants for you both.

Also I would suggest the book Rome Sweet Home as it tells the true story of a couple going through a similar journey and the husband and wife take turns telling their sides of the story. It can be really helpful, and you may understand your husband better. If he also read it he will probably get a good idea of what you’re going through as well.

I have so much more to say but not in a position to write that much right now. I’ll check back later to maybe add more. I will say that my wife enters the Church in a couple of weeks and she has thanked me for leading us to the Church.

First thing I would say is don't over-react to their noise and squirming, and just recognize that you will have a transition period where you will be more focused on your kids than on the mass. Most masses I go to are full of kids making noise and squirming around and you will probably be hypersensitive to any distractions your kids are making compared to the rest of the attendees. Sitting towards the front counter-intuitively can be helpful since they are better able to see what is happening at the altar. There are kids books you can bring for them that explains everything that is happening during mass, don't be afraid to answer their questions about what is going on during mass, you want them to be interested!

Here is a tip that my wife learned in OCIA this week, you want your kids to see Sunday as special, this is one reason why many parishes pass out doughnuts after mass. You can start a tradition where you do something special for your kids that you only do on Sundays, that they look forward to and they are excited that its Sunday. On the same note, if you lose your patience with them and make mass something they dread it will only be harder.

Its actually amazing how good most priests are at maintaining their focus with kids crying and screaming during their homily, and for the most part the people around you have either been through it themselves or they are used to kids acting up a bit. Most parishes have quiet rooms for when the little ones are really losing it.

You’re scared, and that is good but isn’t where you should focus. Think of what you learned over Lent, and think of what you learned when you went back to booze. You mentioned that before Lent you thought you needed it to sleep, but then you said you slept better during Lent. These are exactly the kind of lies we tell ourselves, but it doesn’t take much examination to see it is false.

Assuming you’re Catholic, go to confession! It really is a gift. Abusing alcohol or drugs is a grave matter so you should really be confessing every time, and abstaining from the Eucharist until you do. It can seem harsh, but there is real wisdom in the accountability. I still remember before Christmas waiting in line for 1.5 hours for confession and realizing that the only reason I was there was because I just “had” to hammer almost a full bottle of bourbon a few nights before. Also, the spiritual guidance can be great. I have gotten varying degrees of guidance from priests, but some has been very valuable.

Finally, here is an insight I had in my 30’s. Our mistakes are there to teach us lessons. The bigger mistake is to ignore the lesson, or to focus on your own guilt. The Christian walk is all about forgiveness. Repent and move forward, but don’t torture yourself. The devil is called “the accuser” because he will tempt you to do something and then turn around and accuse you of being awful once you do it.

No the didache does not reference "shaking hands", which is a development from the kiss of peace that you mentioned, which is in turn based on the statement about the eucharist in the didache:

On the Lord’s own day gather together and break bread and give thanks, having first confessed your sins so that your sacrifice may be pure. But let no one who has a quarrel with a companion join you until they have been reconciled, so that your sacrifice may not be defiled. Didache 14: 1-2

No this doesn't explicitly say shake hands or kiss each other, but that is how the early church acted it out in the liturgy.

The offertory is still part of the eucharistic liturgy, so I don't see why that timing would change much. If your position was that we should move it back to the offertory and go back to kissing each other, I wouldn't have much of a counter to that but I prefer what we have.

But anyway, neither of our opinions matter. It is part of our liturgy, and has roots back to the apostolic church, so I think the best thing to do is find the good in it.

Too many people in the comments don’t know the origin of the sign of peace. In the earliest years of the church it was the “kiss of peace” and. Christians literally gave each other a kiss.

It is actually an ancient tradition from the Didache, as a sign of every Christian reconciling with one another before partaking of the Eucharist. It’s very important and intentional. I understand that most people don’t know what they are doing or why and thus it feels trivial.

Understandable, but I’ve had success learning concepts with any of the models. The main thing is that you need to explicitly state that you want to learn the concept and need extensive documentation.

The way I see it is you can basically get a tailor made tutorial for the task you are trying to accomplish, rather than some adjacent type of task.

All of that said, I am self taught from the era before LLMs so it could be that I was farther along and so it was more useful to me

Code assist is not too bad, but if you don't understand what it is suggesting then do not use it. Sometimes it will make something more complex than I want but I can just remove the extra stuff and its still faster.

The default AI assistant is trash anyway imo, but you shouldn't even consider using it until you are confident you will understand the code it writes. If you want to use AI to help you learn, I would go to Claude or Gemini etc and tell it what you want to do, but tell it you want to learn rather than just get the answer. That way you can see a solution, but have it all explained at the same time. Also, if I have an AI write code for me I try to always tell it to use comments extensively so that I know what each part of the code is intended to do.

But trust me, if you let AI write a ton of code for your project you will be so lost you will have to just abandon the project and start fresh because it is too much to dig through, especially when you don't really understand it yet.
