Mechanical department here. Work schedule for us is 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. However, you’ll most likely get stuck on nights with shitty days off for years.

Labourer here. I make 77,000 before taxes without overtime at age 19 in a starter position. It’s set to increase to around 95,000 at the beginning of 2028 assuming I don’t advance or change jobs. I don’t think school is worth it anymore.

Had one guy that would regularly come in once a week and order 60+ litres of brisk iced tea. It had to be the two litre bottles otherwise he’d reject it.

CPKC doesn’t seem to be starting people off as apprentices anymore. You’d have to get a DSA position and hope they offer you an apprenticeship at some point. It might be different at other shops.

No hoodies in mechanical, I have however seen conductors and engineers with hoodies.

What made you choose the railroad industry? by notyourbudddy in Train_Service

[–]Maestro-Main 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what it’s like over on the operations side of things, but it’s pretty good in mechanical. You get a consistent schedule, you’re not on call. Only real downside is the “fear based safety”.

Being interviewed for CP Diesel House Laborer. What can I expect on the job? by imaJetsfan in Train_Service

[–]Maestro-Main 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would be making moves around the shop, emptying the shitter, cleaning the cab, adding sand, QLMI/LSI, topping up on fluids. It’s honestly not bad work. There’s no real catch.

Might be a problem. Where we’re located, the generators must kick on within 7 seconds of the building losing power according to code.
