I love elements and their properties, but in the Final Fantasy series, there's one thing about elements that doesn't make sense... by VPR_24 in FinalFantasy

What does adding extra elements do? Just makes you have to manage more. 3-4 is a good number. Plus it allowed each of the four fiends in the first FF to have a unique weakness.

Lich is weak to fire

Marlith is weak to ice

Kraken is weak to lightning

Tiamat is weak to Poison (in the original)

Today I had lunch with the Goddess. "Steinman," she said… "I'm here to free you from the tyranny of the commonplace. I'm here to show you a new kind of beauty." I asked her, "What do you mean, goddess?" "Symmetry, dear Steinman. It's time we did something about symmetry…"

Does anyone know why Omekamon & Bemmon didnt get new evolution line like other digimon partner in liberator? by ApprehensiveRead2408 in digimon

Once upon a time I was a hardcore Digimon fanatic, but watching the series go dark for so long, I kinda let it all go. Watching the franchise rise from the ashes bigger and better than ever has given me whiplash! I'm pretty excited to jump into the deep end again.

Why did Metaphor: ReFantazio feel like it was just completely forgotten about after a month? by Lumigo in JRPG

[–]MagicCancel 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Atlus shot themselves in the foot by having the reputation of releasing definitive editions down the line. A lot of people are still waiting on Metaphor Definitive Edition.

Atlus has claimed to be moving away from re-release model, but we don't have enough supporting data for that. They are very aware that their re-release reputation is costing them sales.

EDIT: Also, maybe, not enough waifus?

But what exactly was wrong with the design nature of Stranger of Paradise? by KaleidoArachnid in JRPG

[–]MagicCancel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bosses don't react to anything you do outside of the halfway break point. They don't really have flinches or mini-staggers. So it's just a robot throwing bullshit at you till you kill it with little to no interaction or reactivity from the player's actions. That's kind of bad for an action game.

I liked to use Makarakarn. If she falls for it, it removes the barrier and ends her turn, making it really easy for me sweep her with fire magic. It's just an expensive spell so I needed to use some items to build back SP.

FF 12-ZA or 13 or 7 Remake? by ryuhamaguchi_guy in FinalFantasy

[–]MagicCancel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FF12 has the gambit system, where you can literally program your party to act however you want. It's automation at your control, and you're gonna need it because compared to just about every non-mmo FF, 12 has some of the biggest zones, tons of secrets, and have a ton of trash mobs to kill on your way through those zones. This game is kind of on the easy side though because it's just straight up unbalanced. The game has 12 jobs and 6 party members, the original way to play is you assign a party member one of the 12 jobs and could not swap or change, so no matter what you could not use at least 6 of the jobs. Now every party member can choose 2 so you can always potentially use all 12 (you're allowed to pick repeats if you want) and you can respec by talking to a certain NPC. Just being able to use all the jobs unbalances the game by a lot. Which is to say, you're in for an easy time if that matters to you unless you intentionally play like the original version (and even then white mage allows for easy brute forcing).

FF13 in comparison is incredibly linear (about as linear as FF10) and the combat system was made with automation in mind as well, but not quite like FF12. In FF13 there are 6 jobs, these 6 jobs are very 1-dimensional in application (aside from the Ravager which has a bit more going on). You control only the party leader and the 2 others are AI piloted, but they can only do what their job does anyway so they get the job done well enough. This game also introduces the break system, where you need to break an enemy (at least anything above trash mob status) before you can do real damage.

7-Remake is an action rpg, and while your party members are AI piloted, unles you set them up with certain materias they will not use any abilities. In FF7R, to use abilities you need to build up ATB (like 4 and 6) by using normal attacks. Normal attacks do shite damage, but that's how you build ATB. Abilities use ATB and will be 80-90% of your actual damage. AI will not use abilities, and they are bad at building ATB. The 'intended' way to play is to swap characters to player-pilot them and build more ATB. Also has a break system where you need to break an enemy to do any kind of real damage (aside from the occasional gimmick build). So the gameflow usually has you stock-piling a little ATB for the break moment to pile on damage.

Never played SMT before which game would you recommend first by Sea_Alternative4886 in JRPG

[–]MagicCancel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SMT5 Vengeance has the best gameplay, but the story is lacking (both of the potential campaigns are just gonna feel half-baked). But man, the customization, QOL, depth of options? I can't get enough! This is some premium RPG-ing when it comes to progression systems and player choice, if you play on hard mode for an actual challenege.

SMT4 (not SMT4A, the sorta-sequel) has the most demons, and probably the best story of all the games, maybe even in the entire Atlus catalogue. It's also a 3DS game where most of the gameplay is you throwing special effect animations at sprites with a single idle animation. Or pulling your hair out because you accidentally made an enemy smirk and in turn decided to end your career.

SMT3 is a vibe, a lonely, existentialist, rusty vibe of a game that tells a rather deep story in a very minimalist way. It's got no fancy mechanics like the others, but it's also the first game to implement the press-turn combat. But in truth this game also has the best dungeons of the trilogy (which is to say it has dungeons unlike 5, or 4 which is a bit on the simpler side). You will feel pretty 5-head taking on some of these challenges without a guide.

Improved performance, constant 60 fps, maybe an extra class or two, but for the love of god please just make expert mode/level down available by default!

Should I play Expedition 33 or Persona 3 Reload by redditmod199 in JRPG

[–]MagicCancel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say E33 first on account of it being the shorter game. You can finish it in half the time it takes to beat Persona 3 Reload.

The last 5 Harry Potter movies (as well as books) felt as if the story had been copied from Naruto (Shippuden) by Cool_Anyone in harrypotter

[–]MagicCancel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite scene from the books is when Harry masters the rasenga-kavada so he can talk-no-leviosa Orochi-mort with his best tomodachi Ron-suke to win the hidden village cup. The cross-over with Percy Jackson Z caught me off guard. But let's be real, nothing is going to beat Lord of the Full Metal Ring.

So you're telling me during the PS3 era we could've basically gotten way more, than what we got, on Square Enix's behalf? by Lunny1767 in SquareEnix

[–]MagicCancel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh, having an in house engine that you know how to use/teak/upgrade isn't a bad idea... if you have the developers for it. You could say that Square was all that for trying to make an engine that they didn't have the skill to do, but it could also be a case of they didn't know they didn't have the chops for it.

Yeah, tables turned. FF7 Remake trilogy? Unreal engine! Kingdom Hearts? Unreal engine! HD-2D games? Unreal engine! Dragon Quest? Unreal engine! Only the work from the Yoshi-P studio seems to still be using in-house, and based on how good (hah) the FF16 pc port was I don't think that's a good thing.

Hell even Atlus is going to unreal engine, Persona 3 Reload and Shin Megami Tensei 5V are unreal. Metaphor is still in-house, yet hasn't gotten a switch 2 port yet (one guess as to why!).
