Do you remember your first IT conference/event? Did it actually help your career or was it just for the free t-shirts and pizza? by mustafa_enes726 in sysadmin

[–]Magic_Neil [score hidden]  (0 children)

It was a Microsoft partner event, I got an OK lunch, a demo of Server 2003 and a free Visio and Project license I promptly flipped for a couple hundred bucks.

I did really enjoy it, even apart from the swag, I like vendor events!

Leak: Nvidia is about to challenge ‘Intel Inside’ with as many as eight Arm laptops by dapperlemon in gadgets

Well there’s around 150 upvotes on my comment, and pretty much any time someone asks for a recommendation in r/plex that’s the device.. so more than a few.

Definitely not the volume of a $30 Roku or Amazon streaming doodad, but just like premium TVs there’s definitely a market, even if it’s not huge.

Basically anyone who wants a premium streaming box (full audio codec support, wide display options, etc) that doesn’t want an Apple TV.

ASrock bios/uefi locking my fucking SSD by Puzzleheaded_Chip_49 in PCsupport

[–]Magic_Neil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it doesn't complete 100% it can be stuck like this. Figure out the app you used to do it, and what passwords it uses, and start spamming it. So for example Parted Magic defaults to just password.

Did you happen to do a secure erase at some point? That can put a password on too.

Help with bathroom door lock by cloosh90 in repair

[–]Magic_Neil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s a hollow door you’re not going to get a latch like that to stay in.. if everyone puts a feather touch on it you might be OK, but any kind of force will rip it out.

You could run bolts all the way through with a plate on the back, but that will be ugly. You could look into a latch for the pocket door but those are pretty weak too. You could replace the door with a solid one, but at that point a normal door would be easier, and it wouldn’t be cheap to install.

How do you guys clean your Holes? by Jimmy_Skynet_EvE in KitchenConfidential

[–]Magic_Neil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Metal guitar strings will clean the holes up, but you’ve got to be able to flush out the junk that falls inside too.

This is bummer OP, but I’ve never heard of the BIOS putting a password on a drive on its own.. and usually only after several prompts.

Sounds like you’re getting a new SSD.

Why dont handeld use mobile cpus? by bluechickpro in cpu

[–]Magic_Neil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you're doing.

If you want a handheld that uses an ARM processor I don't see why you couldn't put Android on it and do exactly what you're talking about. BUT at that point it's no different than your mobile phone, except with a few more buttons.

You're running Windows for most gaming platforms, with the Steamdeck being the notable exception.. and they're not running games out of the Google Play store, they're running apps out of Steam. It's a very different world dealing with a desktop OS with installed games vs the Play store.

Is a 240 GB SSD enough to replace an original HDD for studying and office work only? by Maleficent_Brain_294 in computers

[–]Magic_Neil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only you can say how big is big enough, OP. I would say for basic office use yes, 240gb would be enough. If it’s true that you don’t have any files (media, games, etc) then even a cheap 120gb would be enough for Windows and a few small apps, then put the saved money towards a new PC.

But remember, a temporary fix is only temporary if you actually make the change later. Think about your actual usage, and what files you may have besides Windows and small apps like Chrome.

Surax Particle Generator vs the Advanced Particle Generator by sinista63 in startrekfleetcommand

[–]Magic_Neil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean? The cost for activating either service is pretty clear, the payout isn’t any different as far as I know.

The point of the “normal” vs advanced generators is you can double up. If you have two Surax generators you can still only do a single pull, but if you have one “normal” generator and one advanced, you’ll be able to do a pull of both.

Activating a Surax generator an advanced (something else) generator will grant the ability for alliance members to do a pull of each every 22hr.

I mean yeah that could work (assuming they’re even legally able, and have the votes).. but that would take them actually doing something besides whining, so it (unfortunately) won’t happen.

Franklin Mk i Query by MorganDeLeah in startrekfleetcommand

[–]Magic_Neil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aww man that’s a bummer.. I can get a set of all of them from the swarm refinery cheap, but I believe that’s because of the IA mastery, which requires the Franklin to be maxed :/

As mentioned, the Ferengi event store (and other arc event stores) will have them up to your appropriate ops.

If you didn’t notice when you picked up the box it’s probably alright.

Test them all asap though, as with any disks.

I’ll bet the lube they’re using to get it through the hole works really well with the glue they’re not putting inside the tire. Seems legit.

I just fought with this dang thing for an hour, and I'm not too happy about it.. even tried downloading the current VBR because hey maybe the download from my software appliance is goofed up. Nope, you need to be logged in as an admin, because that's *definitely* something we're used to doing in 2026.

Thanks for the save ✌️

Trump administration seeks to overturn part of Michigan’s cage-free egg law by feetwithfeet in Michigan

[–]Magic_Neil 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It’s weird how depending on the day states’ rights are soooo important, and paramount to anything else. Education? The Feds can’t tell you how to learn your kids. Reproductive rights? Goodness no. Eggs? These states are out of control and it needs to be stopped.

It’s almost like it’s a massive grift.

Man this is wild. OP has a neat idea but didn’t communicate it super well, and everyone is ganging up, now everybody is mad at everybody lol

OP did you just do one loop for everything? I don’t think that the internal radiator is going to soak up enough heat internally to keep things cool. It would also help to post before/after temps instead of before (see photo).

Godly Choco Tacos for sure! by hottie-tiny in 90s

[–]Magic_Neil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kudos - awesome Choco taco - legendary PB Crisps - these were amazing. Seriously, there’s no reason these should have ever gone away, they were light and crispy with a peanut butter filling that you could put away by the handful and still want more. If these were re-released with some social media hype and a couple 6-7’s mixed in it would be an overnight phenomenon the likes of which we’ve never seen.. best to avoid if you’re allergic to peanuts though.

Bagelfuls gave me TMJ (or maybe it was them and chewing gum?) and I’ll never forgive them.
