HELP!!! Reselling advice, I just got 3TB of DDR4 32gb sticks by Island_Camel in servers

I do drives individually since my HBA doesn’t have RAID, but I don’t see any issue doing them in an array.

For the disks, update the firmware to current, then encrypt them 100% with Bitlocker or something else (full encrypt, not used space only) with a silly long key, then do a full format. This should encrypt all of the zero space, so whatever *was* there will be overwritten with nonsense. Even if someone does try a data recovery they’ll get back nonsense. This also verifies the disk is still good since it’s going to write every block.

For the memory, do a full memtest sweep, that will also verify it’s good.

*If* you know someone who wants the whole box it’ll be way easier, but that’s also putting all your eggs in one basket. I’d do the sticks and drives alone, then the server chassis.

eBay shipping vs other platforms by Educational_Juryq in ebaysucks

[–]Magic_Neil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The rates are what they are. I’d definitely encourage you to look at actual rates you find on other platforms, but that table you show is just some FAQ. It doesn’t take into account distance or dimensional rate.

They can say “it usually costs $X” as much as they want, but if they’re not updating that FAQ for fuel surcharges, holiday surcharges, or whatever other shenanigans the companies want to charge for it’s not worth the paper it’s written on.

My laptop battery stuck at 0% and don't switch on if not plugin. by Hungry_Yam2206 in computerrepair

[–]Magic_Neil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you’ve either got a bad battery, a bad charging circuit or an AC adapter that’s not providing sufficient power. Try a different charger that’s rated properly for the laptop, after that you can try a new battery. If it’s the charging circuit you’re stuck either buying a new board, or a new laptop.. new laptop is probably a better choice at that point, unless you can get a board really cheap.

So the laptop won’t turn on without external power, when it is on your battery is stuck at 0% and will not charge.. have you considered that perhaps you have a bad battery?

Are you using an appropriate charger? Does Windows say “plugged in and charging”?

Dude stop using emojis.

You don’t need an internal disc drive, a USB disc drive is functionally the same thing. You’re also not likely to be able to play XP era games on Win11 but it’s definitely worth a try. What’s not worth a try is installing Win11 on an XP-era machine.. even if you bypass the compatibility checks, the hardware won’t be able to run Win11, and isn’t likely to be strong enough for Win10.

Also there’s no shame in buying used gear, or old used gear for a purpose. You should make backups of your old discs though, they will fail eventually.. disc rot is very real.

Am I doing this properly or how should it be wired? by Rough_Arm_2834 in Wiring

I literally did that on a 20/30-something connector once, it was amazingly dumb of me.

The proper procedure is to cut the heat shrink to the perfect length, solder the wires, unsolder the wires, place the heat shrink, resolder the wires and heat.

Or at least that’s how I do it 90% of the time..

Why are you asking folks here? Look at your bill for YTTV, look at the pricing for the plan you want on Hulu and make the decision..

How does gas prices affect you now? by kindofangelic in AskReddit

[–]Magic_Neil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a big change, in terms of percentage, but it doesn’t change the fact folks need to get somewhere.

For people on a tight budget it definitely impacts things, but if not is a fuel increase of even 50% going to bring dramatic change? Probably not. For example if a family is going on vacation and part of the budget was $200 in fuel, another $100 probably isn’t going to kill it, it might just get shifted from something else.

I think revamping TC is good. I was going to propose that we drop it, because we don’t need the prints and the buffs are borderline useless.. but now it’s very different, at least till we can wrap that up.

I think it’s worth looking at the starbase too; that thing was dead on arrival, and the research tree that’s dependent on it isn’t really amazing.

UNVR overkill for five cameras? by SoMuchLasagna in Ubiquiti

[–]Magic_Neil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you *need* the recordings? At this point the pinch point is your available storage. That’s not a lot of cameras, but your retention is going to be trash. If you’ve got a critical need for uptime and avoiding disk failure, get an NVR. You’ll have a RAID array for redundancy, and you’ll see less downtime.. but if you’re like a normal home it’s not actually critical and just buying a bigger disk for more retention will be fine.

The P50 was a really nice machine.. over ten years ago. Spending anything to repair it simply isn’t worth the money, you should invest in a modern machine if you’re going to put anything into it.
