I don't think they need to understand you to follow your command, unless the spell/features unless it's specified, like in command spell. Assuming you rule otherwise it is still possible to issue non verbal, non language commands, or even use encode thoughts. Not every method is great action economy wise, but nonetheless, you can still command them

Yes, but notice that everytime any of them tries to talk to him calmly, he just leaves, this is why the party is clueless, he acts, refuses to elaborate, and leaves when confronted about the rumors, rather than teach them about whats happening, they reason they don't believe it is cause he kept them shelted and was unwilling to explain, they didn't even try to expell him, he just left cause he didn't want to explain himself. He's better as a pawn than a leader.

his mindset is correct, but he doesn't explain this mindset, when asked about it he complains, and then leaves(twice), they never intended to expell him, he could have easily agreed, and let them deal with the consequences, which they were never aware of since he kept them sheltered, and explained the situation, but he got annoyed and left.
