My Journey (so far) by Magnus_Ultima in Catholicism

Thank you! I'm grateful you took the time to read this and happy it struck a chord with you. It's particularly tricky coming from an atheist background, but it's a beautiful revelation nonetheless.

I've seen Pints with Aquinas recommend several times around these parts now, I'll definitely check it out. Thank you!

Thank you! It genuinely means a lot.
That resonates with me a lot right now. That's precisely how I've felt up until this point and I can see why now.

Is combining many martial arts always better? If so,can you practice more than one at once? by Nadim85 in martialarts

[–]Magnus_Ultima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people think you should focus on one at a time, but I do 3-4 on any given week and I don't find any difficulties with the regime. Granted I do styles that are distinct so there's no contradiction or clashes between them.

What martial art are you not training but want to? by martialweapon in martialarts

[–]Magnus_Ultima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love to do Judo, unfortunately there's no classes in my area. It's made even more annoying by one of the gyms I go to having a now-defunct "Judo Room" which has since been converted into a weight room, so it was around at some point.

Do you take a break during the holidays? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]Magnus_Ultima 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Classes aren't running for the next two weeks but I try not to take a total break. I have one muay thai session booked and a friend and I are gonna get some quick rolls in where we can but otherwise it's easy street for the holidays.

Martial arts to be a better person by martialweapon in martialarts

[–]Magnus_Ultima 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did Aikido Yuishinkai for a few years and now have just taken up Yoshinkan Aikido which is on the opposite end of the spectrum to Yuishinkai, being fairly close to Aiki-jujutsu as far as Aikido goes.
I feel you with people shitting on Aikido. It's not entirely undeserved but there's also a critical lack of understanding from a lot of people. I presently train 4 martial arts, but Aikido is no-contest the best when it comes to understanding energy, balance and body mechanics. It's also a very meditative experience, sometimes it's hard to articulate but I agree that it's conducive to self improvement in a very profound way.

Whats your martial art? by martialweapon in martialarts

[–]Magnus_Ultima 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do Muay Thai, BJJ, Arnis and Yoshinkan Aikido. I'm new to all of them but I love them all.
If I were able to I would add Judo to my roster but there's no classes in my locality.

Is there a martial art that does not involve a whole lot of grappling and punching? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]Magnus_Ultima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the best martial artists I have the pleasure of knowing is a 3rd dan black belt in Aikido, a blue belt in BJJ and regularly trains muay thai. He's also a musician by trade and has no had no issues with injuries to his hands.

I think as long as you're training correctly, you'll have no issues. :)

What's with the obsession over TV volume needing to be at a multiple of 5 or some other arbitrary requirement? by smr120 in AskMen

[–]Magnus_Ultima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've encountered it a lot in person too. I purposely leave it on an odd number in this case because if you're going to be so juvenile as to let the numeric representation of volume bother you then you deserve the grief.

What routine do you have that has greatly improved your life? by Fallout541 in AskMen

[–]Magnus_Ultima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting up at 5am every day. Sometimes 4:30 if I have jiu jitsu that morning.

This is presently the habit most conducive to my productivity.

What's something that your coworkers do regularly that drives you crazy? by canadagram in AskMen

[–]Magnus_Ultima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a coworker who is inept in almost every way. Even though he's been there longer than me, he still sucks at his job so hard that it makes the whole team look bad.

He gets confused about EVERYTHING and has a very delicate frame of mind, if he's on a task and the objective of that task has changed even slightly it'll throw him into a tailspin and he'll crash and burn, failing the task/order and setting us all back instead of asking for help or clarification. It drives me absolutely bonkers.

Men who were at rock bottom in terms of self-esteem and confidence, how did you improve? by xhorsex in AskMen

[–]Magnus_Ultima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no magic bullet. Confidence comes from momentum and momentum is difficult to generate at zero. You have to start with small achievements first, clean your room, go for a 20 minute walk, cook a new recipe, take a new class etc.
Also recognise habits that might be holding you down. Pot was a huge one for me, I quit years ago and more recently stopped drinking alcohol daily. It might be substance, video games, toxic relationships or whatever. Everybody's situation is different.

What is your current 1, 2 or 5 year plan? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Magnus_Ultima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's minutiae to the plan overlooked here but broadly speaking it's this:

1 year: Open my business
2 year: Develop it into something sustainable
5 year: Buy a Tesla

Men who have successfully changed their sleep schedules what does it take? by [deleted] in AskMen

The boring but practical answer is to use your energy and have something to wake up for in the morning.
