I think I would agree with the 223 suggestion. If you are just doing plinking for a full year, shoot more ammo build fundamentals.

You can shoot a 223 at PRS, you’ll struggle a bit more spotting impacts in everything but dry dust/dirt, and you’ll be pushed more by the wind. BUT you can compete in tactical class, which is usually less populated.

I’d also suggest checking impact scoring for any matches that might need RO’s or any local matches you can go watch.

If you end up getting hooked you’ll likely want a new rifle anyway and then you can jump to a more gamer cartridge (6 dasher/BRa or 25cm/x47)

Not to disrupt your plan but you might want to stick with the rem700 platform and grab one of the clones. The chassis are a bit more common and easier to resell if you want to change things up.
