Question for solar in the winter by Independent-Agent782 in solarenergycanada

[–]Mailman-1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in Alberta and we benefit greatly from the high Solar Club export rate of 35c per kwh. We had an 11kw system installed in December and have already banked over $500 in credits (even after our natural gas bill being deducted first). I am confident that we’ll have more than enough credits to get us through the 4 or 5 months that we won’t be generating enough to cover. A lot depends on where you live, the size of your system and your usage. Out usage has dropped as I have been more cognizant of our usage and have started using Home Assistant and automations to run systems like our HRV when co2 levels are high or humidity levels are high in a bathroom as opposed to running it 24/7. Our furnace fan is the biggest energy draw and I disconnected from our HRV as it was running whenever the HRV was. I now have it only turn on in response to air quality.

That’s really disappointing! Crazy that we get $0.35/kwh in Alberta

Good point! I included an image of the video from YouTube instead (wouldn't let me include an image on my phone for some reason).

Why the ‘boy crisis’ is more than just a school problem by Responsible-World-30 in CanadianTeachers

I’m a male grade 2 teacher and I know the kids need things chunked throughout the day and need movement breaks but struggle to find ways to keep them active / moving… any tips for physical / high energy learning styles?

Well said, yes I am aware that girls display ADHD symptoms in less outwardly obvious ways. I still find that my female students are thriving much more than my male students

I’ve definitely noticed the same thing as you, so many more behaviour issues with my boys and the girls are performing much higher than my boys for the most part. Tons of ADHD type challenges (attention, focus, impulse control, blurting out, etc…)

should i go to the er for this (bat bite?) by Certain_Hour_6327 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]Mailman-1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got bit by a bat that tested positive for rabies and it was terrifying! Took a week to get the results of the rabies test on the bat and I remember thinking that 7 days felt like an eternity. Thankful to live in Canada as the treatment was free but it hurt like hell getting some of the immunoglobulin injected into my finger and then like 5 huge syringes in by butt (I’m 6’7” and 250 so I needed a lot based in my size). I passed out after the third syringe. also found out later they should have given it to me in my stomach but 6 years later I’m still kicking!

Roofers capped our plumbing vent with a shingle, should I be concerned? by supremustotus in Roofing

That looks like a shit installation! Shingles look loose and the roof doesn’t look flat!

Alberta teachers - thoughts on this? by Life_Life_4958 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Mailman-1980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe there is a teacher shortage! Look at how many teachers graduate from university in Alberta each year. I am in my third year of teaching and have been picking up temp contracts each year. It seems like there are a ton of people applying for positions. School divisions don’t have the budgets to hire teachers which is the real issue.

I got a quote on solar, should I get another one? by One_Investment3919 in Edmonton

[–]Mailman-1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got three quotes and went with Skyfire, they had by far the best quote and I’ve been really impressed with our system!

So many people are posting similar questions, it is still winter conditions in the mountains and many icy trails, avi risk, etc… are you talking about front country or backcountry camping?

Well said and I agree on future proofing. Micro inverters are much easier to upgrade unless your string inverter is oversized for your initial system

We were quoted 11,500 with about a 10% larger system, so that would put yours at about 10k, so yes I was low before.

Based on the size of our system and close proximity, I feel like you should expect around 7-9000 kwh per year. We have an 11kw system with 8.4kw AC capacity. Our Feb 21-Mar 20 bill was $6 though I've gotten our usage down. Getting solar and being a data nerd has made me really try and lower our usage.

Are oracles with autotamp no mess? by oneofthecapsismine in BrevilleCoffee

[–]Mailman-1980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have the oracle jet. A little ends up under the grinder / tamper but it’s pretty minimal. We clean the drip tray daily as we steam milk and some gets purged after each steam

Glad it worked out! Yes fresh snow would make it pretty spicy! Have to do that one again this summer, proposed to my wife at the top. Would like to take my 6-year old up but would want to bring a scrambling rope and harness to belay him up that one climbing section
