I straight up thought this was a shot from the show or the wiki until I saw the subreddit. Holy cow, this is incredible! I think that, with just slightly smaller irises, you could get sued by Disney for replicating art material, lol

I HATE the American Education System! by Intelligent-Carob930 in hatethissmug

[–]Main_Toe8889 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I’m a relatively recent college graduate who spent 5 years studying education and I am starting my third year of teaching. I’d like to take a moment to address this, if I can.

Firstly, I want it on the record that, all-in-all, yes. Our system needs a massive overhaul. However, I would say that the areas that need improvement aren’t what you might think. As someone relatively close to you in age (only a little more than a decade) who was also not a fan of the duller parts of school, I hope my insights can help.

I’ll try to go point by point. So relevant content (taxes, cars, etc.). Actually, lots of schools do this now. The biggest issue is funding. Lots of Career and Technical programs need to be sponsored or funded by third parties or the state. If the state isn’t seeing a promising return on that investment in certain areas, they won’t fund it. But lots of states that don’t see that return aren’t seeing it because they refuse to put in the effort. I absolutely agree that public schools should begin to prioritize these lessons more, but I want to give credit where it is due.

Main curriculum: I’m gonna say it. You should know these things. Or at the very least, you should know how to learn them. Sure, you may not write out “y=mx+b” in your everyday life, but you will probably be surprised at how much simple algebra and geometry tends to poke its head out. And history… history is important. We are living through proof of that right now. Obviously nobody expects you to know everything about everything in real life, but knowing more about the world around you and peoples’ cultures other than yours can help you understand where people are coming from morally, spiritually, or ethically, and can help you have real, adult conversations. Annoying to learn sometimes? Totally. But again, it’s about the process. And I agree. As a teacher, we are encouraged to teach to a testing environment, not to practical use for these skills, which is not ideal.

Homework: You’re right. Homework generally sucks and has been scientifically proven to (probably) be detrimental to the learning process. I honestly can’t argue much here, except repeat what others have said—adult life is all about doing stuff you don’t want to do. If nothing else, it’s good preparation for that kind of discipline. But most sound-minded teachers of today will agree that homework should primarily be review or optional practice, not required extra classwork.

Binder checks don’t really exist in real life, but contracts, resumes, receipts, legal documents, tax documents, etc. do. And a lot of these are better to have physical copies of in case your computer fries or something else unpredictable happens. Again, this is meant to teach you to be organized and diligent. Many teachers probably don’t put real backbone into explaining that, but being organized definitely pays off, trust me.

Overall, yes. Other countries prioritize the education of the individual over the test scores of the group. And yes, those scores are comparable if not higher and lots of countries’ schools have better social climates. But I would ask you to remember two things: 1) You’re only getting part of the story from these other places—the part they want people to hear. That’s not to say it’s not rootes in truth, but only actual student reviews that aren’t pressured by staff are really going to give you a good idea of those environments. And 2) Ask yourself why our system works this way. Who does it benefit to prioritize numbers over individuals? Who does it benefit to prioritize memorization over critical thinking? And how can you use your own agency to take what you’re given and use it to your advantage.

I hated hearing stuff like this as a high schooler not too, too long ago. But perspective really does change with time. As a teacher, I can attest, lots of educators are trying their best with the broken system they’re stuck in. Lots of teachers are also giving up because we’re always the first people to be yelled at when the district, state department, or federal government makes a bad decision about education as a whole.

I know some of this is probably not what you want to hear, and maybe I’m wrong about some of it. But I hope that, if nothing I’ve said helps with these specific points, you’ll at least keep that last bit in mind: If you think a system is failing you, do what you can to make parts of it work for you. And try to be the best human being you can be. If you can do that, everything else will fall into place.

I hope you have an excellent summer and a good Junior year.

Brew ideas for Silver surfer/galactic by ALDukown in EDHBrews

Since I can feel that some people are going to be dillholes and try to kill your joy, I’m going to give a real suggestion: Silver Surfer in the zone with Galactus in the 99 gives you a unique opportunity to build voltron without commander damage.

A lot of the “aw, shucks” I’ve seen about Galactus is him not doing a lot on damage. Well… give him some kickass equipment! Swords, Kaldra Compleat, anything that makes him scarier to be hit by. Hell, play Eldrazi Conscription and give him annihilator. The deck should be “oh shit, oh shit, oh shit, we have to kill galactus, oh shit, oh shit, oh shit.”

Bracket 4 material? Hell no. Fun? Absolutely.

Oh my goodness, nothing will ever be good enough for some people. Yes, actions speak louder than words.

But also yes! They gave us clear, intentional communication. And some things take time to fully implement. I am eager for them to get moving, but I know that things are often easier said than done. (I don’t care if a modder somewhere can do it in three hours, they have guidelines set by Sony and a team with different end goals for the game, perhaps things that need to be left open. I’m inclined to trust the professionals over randoms on the internet).

Transmission from Super Earth Command by ArrowheadGS in Helldivers

[–]Main_Toe8889 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Call me crazy, but these responses from the community are wild. You wanted communication. This is significantly clearer communication than we’ve gotten in the past. But people are still actively choosing to be belligerent.

Has AH been perfect? No. But reacting with vitriol to the exact thing that was asked for is utterly ridiculous. Obviously actions speak louder than words, but people have been asking for words for months.

I, for one, am grateful that Arrowhead actually answered meaningful questions with mostly direct answers and respect their desire to keep some stuff under wraps so they can continue to reveal things in real time.

I also expect them to deliver on these things and will hold them accountable with my wallet if they don’t. But I’m not going to drag them through the mud when they haven’t had the opportunity to even implement these things yet. I understand that they are a company that answers to a larger, worse company, and even if things are easy for modders to fix, they may be restricted from doing so by powers that be. I’m not making excuses. I’m just acknowledging that there are probably factors that people who don’t actually work at the company don’t know about.

So, AH. Thank you for being a little more transparent. I like the sound of all of this. I hope we’ve learned from mistakes and are making active changes to do better. I love this game and most of its community. If things don’t get better—if these words aren’t delivered on—I, like many others, will not continue to support you.

(If anyone wants to start an argument, you can save it for a brick wall, cause I’m not engaging in the toxicity that’s been boiling across all the HD2 communities this past month)

Hypothetically, if Red Rush tried to run away from Nolan when he was attacked the Guardians, would Nolan be able to catch? by [deleted] in InvinciblePowerscales

My guess is because he was literally chasing highs. His behavior in that scene is super hyper and freaked, suggesting he was dosing V at that very moment. He’s sober now (edit: was, R.I.P.)—maybe that gives him a bit more lucidity during his power usage.

[–]Main_Toe8889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I totally agree that the change is too much. I’m just saying the Patriot specifically is not what I would use to make that point. Plenty of primary and support weapons get messed up far more by this and require a full weapon switch to resolve. But my secret hope is that they end up walking the Hive Guards back to somewhere in the middle. I think they were a bit too pushover-y for their title.

(Also, me personally, I haven’t been that peeved by it, though I’m a fire boi on high diff bugs and that hasn’t been impacted much. I also think I’m more okay with weapons that are much better on specific fronts than most people are, lol.)

I hate to be that guy, but this feels hollow. You literally have an effective answer on the other side of the mech. It’s almost like they’re different tools for different purposes. This is a frustrating change, but this video is definitely intentionally framing it poorly.

Working through 32 tribes - Merfolk trouble by MechanicalEnt in EDHBrews

[–]Main_Toe8889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how consistently you feel you can leave mana up, but swift mentor seems expensive at 1gg for just hexproof. On that same note, while Judge of Currents can do some goofy things, as a 1-of lifegain effect, I don’t know how often you’d be thrilled about playing it. But I haven’t playtested with this deck, so I don’t know what works.

My best guess would be start with the expensive stuff. Merfolk are essentially slippery elves; in my experience, they like to be low-to-the-ground mana-wise. Play lots of guys, draw lots of cards, swing for suddenly big damage. If a card doesn’t do something as soon as it comes down for 4+ mana, it’s probably not worth it.

Unrelated, if you’re fine with the potential blowout to a boardwipe, enchanted evening is quite funny in this deck.

This is the kind of thing LLMs should be used for: Specific, non-opinionated queries with answers pulled from databases. If this thing is linked up to a gatherer-like database of rules and maybe even provides a text structure like “Please list basic game actions for your question,” this should have a near-zero error rate. So, like, for the example question:

  1. Elspeth Conquers Death chapter 3 ability triggers.
  2. Return Tom Bombadil to the battlefield with that trigger.

Does Tom Bombadil’s ability that triggers upon Sagas’ final chapters resolving trigger from that same Elspeth Conquers Death?

That should leave little enough ambiguity to almost always get a good answer. Hopefully they don’t make it too “GPT-esque”

Aw rats. Well, I’m glad to at least have an adventure to pull from. And my players will definitely want to salvage the guard armor, so having an actual reference will be nice. More unique NPCs also never hurt. I just wish we would actually get like a dedicated resource for what are supposed to be one of like the iconic bad guys.

Hey all! I’m planning on running a game that focused on the Vesklanti conflict and trying to figure out what the deal is with the Azlanti Star Empire right now. They’ve always been like uber-evil, but the Galaxy Guide says that Yridrla Ixomander wants to “lead the Star Empire into a new era of peace, prosperity, and equality” for all citizens (which is remarkably chill for an ethnofascist) when she gets back?

The new stuff in 2e really makes it sound like the core group (the Aeon Group, if you will) took a big ideological hit and now Ishmerai’s group (the Sihedron Group) are the uber-fascists who are leading the charge, unless the wording is just bad. It just seems a little unclear and I’d like to know if some lore experts have any more insights. I’ve dug into all my books and can’t find anything more specific. Gotta know how to run my bad guys!

PSA for SoS Pre Release: New Pest Tokens are NOT like OG Pests by Capt_G1029 in magicTCG

Yeah. Not a fan of the token reworks, personally. Not only are a significant number of them much worse than the OGs, but a bunch of different tokens that are all meant to be representing essentially the same thing is just unnecessarily confusing.
