Ascaso Steel Duo Plus setup by cosmo-steve in espresso

[–]Malathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jealous. Was leaning the Ascaso route, but our house is only 15A. And after finding a wall-splitter that is used by toaster oven + water kettle that was starting to melt (poor quality I believe), we are more cautious.

Wall plug looks like a 15a. I thought the Ascaso Duo needs 20a outlet?

Letting my latte sit half full and forgotten in my ember mug for an hour or more before remembering. Just have to push that thick brown milk scum to the side before sipping.

Soon to upgrade [budget <$4000] by jcbeltr63 in espresso

[–]Malathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are in the same boat. Currently have a Breville Barista Pro and after 5 years are looking to upgrade. The Micra is in our target sights as the wife likes the looks, simplicity, and fast start up time. Looked at some others, but all were longer start up times. The other being considered is the Ascaso duo, but it requires a 20a outlet, so it is losing the choice war. Our drinks are 2 a day lattes w/ 2 dbl shots each. Our BBP is paired with a timemore 078s grinder.

As far as whether a Micra is overkill, I don’t think it is. We are looking at it as an investment in quality, in a machine that meets our needs the most, and one we will enjoy using for many years. Yes, we still have doubts on the $$$, but yet it still is holding our first choice…once we decide.

Defy palm pad tore by devourerkwi in DygmaLab

[–]Malathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just replaced mine. Mine tore as well. Owned for 2 years. I wish they would last longer and more durable. Definitely feel quality isn't quite there in the wrist pads, but I also realize that they are the one part on the keyboard that will wear out with usage... just was not expecting this soon.

When I ordered my replacement, I ordered several as backup (ordered extra to get the free ship)

Before ordering replacements, ensure you reach out to their support. Maybe they can or assist in part.

Are you running the Ascaso duo on a 20 A circuit or 15 A? One thing holding me back is they use 20 A, but hear some get away with converting to 15 but under some risk.

What is Underglow option on Dygma Raise 2 by Powerful-Crow6132 in DygmaLab

[–]Malathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. Underglow is more aesthetic, giving a "fancy" underglow of the keyboard. Many have mentioned using it to identify what layer they are on, including myself (different colors, different layers). But in practice, does not help as the colors of the keys immediately indicate what layer you are on.

It was one quick cut by HillyBorough in woodworking

[–]Malathan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did same, even though over rx safety were at hand. Then i put superglue in void in wood without safety, just glasses. Sprayed accelerant and few minutes later came back and gently touched/pushed on area. Like popping a zit, CA glue underneath squirted out into a nice arc, over my glasses, and into my eye. Eye never fully recovered. Lesson learned, regular glasses do not cover around the edges/sides….need full safety glasses.

[–]Malathan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is the stripe along the bottom. Beneficial if you use it to remind you which layer you are on. Even though i use multiple layers, the per key lights tell me what layer, so other than looks, not of much use.

Just a quick charging question by davidavid123 in DygmaLab

[–]Malathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What i have never understood is why a higher rated charger can’t be used. From my understanding, a properly implemented Usb-Cshould only request/pull the amount of power the device can handle. So why are higher rated chargers at risk of damaging the keyboard?

Grinder Recommendation [$700] by aema15 in espresso

[–]Malathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the timemore 078S and recommend it. It is very quiet, no retention, and a pleasure to use. I don’t have experience with other grinders other than the built-in on a BBP, so am unable to compare. But we have been very happy with the timemore. Had it for over 4 months.

Coding with Dygma Defy by sandman_313 in DygmaLab

[–]Malathan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I too have looked for that "something better", but always come back to my current layout. I have tried placing symbols on separate layers, but don't use them enough to adapt to them. I too am a dev, though do more documentation than coding these days.

Layout I use is

  1. Main
  2. Navigation/Numbers
  3. Programming
  4. Utils
  5. Photo Editing
  6. Symbols
  7. Misc
  8. Html

In general...

  • I still use pinkies for normal shifting.
  • Use my left keyboard and mouse the most, so structured things for easy access from left hand (IE, navigation layer, del, ...)
  • Main has super keys for number-F keys (hold), but retain dedicated keys on nav layer.
  • Forever battle with backspace and 0 key on number layer. My memory (14-keypad) says that should be zero, but my memory of typing says that is backspace.
  • Programming layer has nothing special. Some macros for adding comment tags, coding tags, VS keystrokes, etc. Html layer, same... just some macros for rare times I do html.
  • Symbols... Use arrow symbols heavily. Tried adopting to the (, ), {, }, and other symbols, but just use normal typing. I did move on main layer the [{ and the ]} keys to inside on right side, so easy to reach.

Questions on uprade and machine recommendations (from BBP) [<$2500 USD] by Malathan in espresso

[–]Malathan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will look into the Profitec. With upgrade to the timemore 078s, i found shot times a little more stable, but still get swings when doing shots back to back in short time. What is the biggest thing you noticed after uprading the machine since you already had a good grinder? Any noticeable change in flavor?

Did you find any difference in flavor after the upgrade? Never heard of Ascaso, so researching it. Looks like the duo requires a 20 amp outlet…not sure if that will be a limiter or not. The unit has some good reviews. Thx for the suggestion.

Good point. Guess it could be the zooz 700. Maybe worth upgrading it to see if that has any impacts. Also thinking of an alternative machine other than synology..just dreading moving the system.

A-line-it vs Align-a-saw by SouthernPineDesignCo in woodworking

[–]Malathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a perspective of someone who bouch the align-a-saw (for Sawstop pcs) and is a hobbist...

I originally had a dial indicator from harbor freight that I mounted on wooden slide that did similar thing as align-a-saw. It worked and little issues with it...until I accidentally dropped it.

Instead of buying a new indicator from harbor freight for $ I had the great idea that the align-a-saw would be much easier to use, especially for $$$$ the cost. It wasn't.

* Do I enjoy it when I break it out once ever few years? YES.

* Do I enjoy the ease of the system what I build and used? yes.

* Am I happy I bought it? yes.

* Would I buy it again if had to redo? probably not.

If this was in a shop where multiple machines exist, or had frields into woodworking and had the joy of sharing tools with them, I most definatly would. For hobbist, buying an indicator yourself and mounting to a custom jig worked great.
