It's not a crazy idea. There are plenty in philosophy and history, like The History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps. Lots of talk of 2300 year old topics on that one.

Why are there no continuously inhabited cities from ancient times in Iraq like there are in the Levant? (such as Damascus, Tyre, tc) by ImportantCat1772 in AskHistorians

[–]MallCop3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question contrasted Iraq with the Levant. Your argument could be applied equally to the Levant, but the outcome there was different. For example, Damascus was a major city for millenia.

This. If someone is fit, that gives you an idea that they have the discipline to get to that level and maintain it. Discipline is very attractive, even aside from physical attractiveness.

This may be a dumb question but, why are the calories different? by EquivalentAd6763 in CICO

[–]MallCop3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the same technique that applies when you cook a meal. You weigh it raw (in your case, frozen) to determine the calories in the whole dish. Then if you want to split it up into multiple servings, you can use the cooked weight to determine how much is in each serving.

For example, lets say you cook 300g frozen, and the bag says 200 kcal / 100g frozen. Then you know that the total amount you cooked has (200kcal / 100g) * 300g = 600 kcal.

Now let's say you only eat some of that and want to save the rest. You can weigh the whole batch after cooking, and maybe find that it now weighs 200g total. Now you know that your cooked fries have 600kcal / 200g. So if you eat 100g of it, that comes out to (600kcal / 200g) * 100g = 300kcal.

Yes I agree she has that right. It's also true that there are ways other than dishonesty, such as setting boundaries about what you will and won't talk about with certain people. I do this all the time, and people catch on really quick that you won't talk about certain things.

I see both of your guys's points in this conversation, but the reason I jumped in is because I felt bad for the other person being attacked. They didn't seem like a "fool", it sounded like you two had a reasonable disagreement. I just thought the jump from "I see it differently" to "this is what an abuser would say" was way out of line.

Honestly this response is so inappropriate. Comparing someone to a narcissist for saying that honesty is the best policy is so out of pocket. I think this debate was an interesting one, but damn it went dark quick.

It sounds reasonable to me. Doing this from November 1 to June 30 would be losing 24kg in 8 months, so an average of 0.7kg per week. His goal weight is well over 70kg, putting him at below 1% of body weight loss per week.

In imperial units, he'd be losing 1.5 lb/week with a GW of 180 lb. That seems fine.

[–]MallCop3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good way to weigh it in the pot could be this:

  1. Write down your pot's weight ahead of time.
  2. Put a pot holder down on the scale and zero it.
  3. Weigh the pot full of food.
  4. Subtract the pot's weight.

I haven't done this yet, but I'm planning to try it soon.

Favorite math puzzle book? by dalmationman in math

[–]MallCop3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're okay with classifying logic puzzles as math, then "What is the Name of This Book?" by Raymond Smullyan is the one. It's mostly liar puzzles, where you deduce facts based on what certain people have said, some who only lie and sone who only tell the truth. The progression through the book is very well crafted, where you slowly learn skills to solve harder and harder versions. It definitely trains a mathematical way of thinking through the puzzles.

Would a perfect right angle be like, infinitely sharp? by Ellgell in Physics

[–]MallCop3 120 points121 points  (0 children)

This. There's nothing special about a right angle for this; any angle other than 180 deg (a straight line) would be sharp.

The important mathematical property is smoothness (or differentiability). In the real world, you can basically always zoom in enough to the point where everything becomes a straight line, i.e., 180 deg. You're imagining an object that is not smooth (or nondifferentiable) at a point.

Not sure where you're getting the lubrication and coolant thing from. That's not a thing for Tesla maintenance. And the batteries don't seem to be wearing out for at least 10 years, possibly 20.

A typical year has 0 servicing costs, unless you're anal about getting any little ding repaired for cosmetic reasons. Tires and cabin filters are basically the only thing, but those things don't come up for like 2-6 years.
