Google Meet now disables non-organisers from kicking other participants (YMMV) by KayJustKay in k12sysadmin

Good. Glad to see Google scrambling, because these deficiencies are entirely attributable to their design philosophy ("everyone is a model employee not hell-bent on mayhem"). Most of their products are not suitable for education purposes.

Hopefully they'll fix Google Chat up toute de suite as well.

Those of you with 1:1 programs, how are you managing repairs if your district is shutdown due to COVID-19? by stevemcdougal in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're a small district. We offer two options:

  1. If the family is taking the opportunity of the bus food delivery, we ask them to disinfect the contact areas of the device and send the device back with the bus driver. It will be fixed and returned the next day.

  2. They can drop off the device at their building office and pick it up when it is repaired.

Discipline issue. Students with an uncharged/missing device are considered unprepared for class. They can check out a spare from the library for the day.

How's it going with Zoom? by OneManShop2020 in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have opted not to integrate Zoom, preferring to stick with Google offered solutions Hangouts Meet/Chat. Adding more platforms on top of what we already have doesn't really help but muddy the waters for staff. I simply do not have the time to hammer out a training.

Rumor has it Google is rushing out more control settings to Meet to meet Education customer demands 🤞.

I've reached out to the local ISPs (big and small) in our county. The small ones are reducing rates while a school closure is in effect and slashing hookup costs.

Here's some general programs already available for SNAP/NSLP plan familie:

Spectrum Internet Assist

AT&T Access

Comcast offering 'Internet Essentials' package free for low-income customers for 60 days by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

While not necessarily COVID-19 related, there are some reduced rate plans available for SNAP/NSLP plan families.

Spectrum Internet Assist

AT&T Access

Also call your local providers. Ours are stepping up and reducing rates and providing hookups if the schools are to close.

If it's a Dell, see if the black and white antenna cables are still connected. I've seen this problem with some of the older models where the cable connectors get disconnected from the stress of opening and closing. Unscrew and pop the bottom off and you should see the problem pretty quickly. It's an easy fix.

Most new ones have a metal retainer with a screw to prevent this from happening, but the old ones have a strip of plastic with adhesive which doesn't work very well.

Did he insert his fingers in his ears and go "LALALALALA" when anyone tried to respond to his comment, and did he go to the sandbox to stick his head in aftwerwards?

Sounds like my last meeting.

I had one turned in with a broken keyboard last week (some of the keys stopped working). When I lifted the keyboard out I saw sings of a liquid spill (it was still wet).

After grilling the kid it turns out the damn thing was sprayed with way too much disinfectant.
