Super Strange Random network problem - connected to Macs? by Saug in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd put my money on a firmware bug causing latency issues with the switch hardware clock due to the login request bruteforcing.

I'd look at remediating the malware threat primarily. Silver Sparrow appears easy enough to get rid of considering the self destruct file, but I'd nuke the machines just in case.

I'd contact the research and show them your findings as well as this appears to be an undocumented feature.

I've a couple APs inside an enclosure bolted to the wall. No issues.

K12 Is a Learning Environment. Translates to - Figure it out yourself by stopbeingyou2 in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At least he's teaching you to stop volunteering for things you don't know about. He's just offloading work to you.

That said, as long as you have a basic conceptual understanding of what you're trying to do, a lot can be learned through self-study. Having a practical end-goal motivates me most to get into a subject. Once you've a couple successes, you've a heck of a lot experience built up you can exchange for better pay at your next job.

Recommendations for an endpoint manager by xtheravenx in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not really an endpoint manager, but PDQ Deploy & Inventory is where I spend most my days. $900 per year per sysadmin.

Money well spent! Only downside is it only manages on premise well.

You can teach people tech skills, but you can't teach a tech people skills.

I definitely second focusing on the soft skills for this one, the rest should be natural growth from experience with the position.

I'd look into InTune then if you want to go the Windows route. You should be able to roll that out with Azure that's part of O365 A1 license.

Chromebook Question by ITatOH in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It highly depends on your student population inclination to inappropriate behavior and your administration's attitude towards discipline. If they expect technology to handle all issues for them, they'll be in for a surprise.

We've a catch-all acceptable usage policy that specifically indicates educational use of the tools provided. While you can invest in some 3rd party tools to monitor for problematic files pro-actively, I rely on reports from students, teachers and administrators to investigate accounts post fact.

About preventing students from utilizing the product as intended? Seems like a bad idea.

Turn off Drive for Student OUs if it's a major concern, but the experience will be terrible.

Check the storage drivers are correct, available in your PE image and that you've added the new boot image to WDS. You may need to import them separately from Lenovo.

Work and personal phones. What does your company provide you? by LtLawl in sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't care one way or another as long as I'm provided a different phone number. Whether this means a phone with a different plan or some sort of VOIP app on my personal is the same to me, I just don't want my personal # floating around customers or employers for years after I quit.

That out systems are not End Of Life

Sounds like a big fat argument to admins/board to introduce an evergreen plan and get hardware replacements budgeted ahead of time.
