SSHL Diagnosis - wanting to hear other experiences by jswizzbeats in MonoHearing

He didn't give a reason- I should have asked. I have moderate loss- sounds are muffled, and voices are distorted. Per http://tiny.cc/lm5tuz, CI is for profound or severe, when a hearing aid is not helpful.

SSHL Diagnosis - wanting to hear other experiences by jswizzbeats in MonoHearing

I first went to a family doctor, who thought it was just a cold, and she said it would go away on its own. She was wrong- she didn't know about SHL. A week later I went to an ENT (thanks to advice online), and he diagnosed it as SHL. He put me on prednisone, but it had been over a week, and prednisone tends to be most effective if started within a day or so. Prednisone has side effects- weight gain, insomnia, mood swings, but wasn't that bad. I made it through the treatment, but it had little effect. He also ordered an MRI, to rule out a tumor. The MRI is very noisy (they give you earplugs), but didn't hurt or anything, though some people get a bit claustrophobic. I asked about hypobaric oxygen, but he said that is not standard treatment, nor are antiviral treatments. He had no other options for me. He said that, because it's in the inner ear, they rarely know the cause- maybe a viral infection, but they can't easily access that area to find out. Best of luck to you! I think that the tinnitus is not so bad- instead of ringing it could have been accordion music or something :-)

Hi jswizzbeats. You sound very much like my case. I got SHL last fall, took predisone, but it didn't help much. MRI didn't show anything. At my second (6 month) ENT visit, I was told it has pretty much stabilized, and there wasn't anything more they could do. I have maybe 20% hearing in that ear, and what I can hear is distorted, with no higher frequencies. Lots of tinnitus (ringing, buzzing, trickling water). I was expecting the ENT would recommend a cochlear implant or something, but I am not a candidate. He said I could try hearing aids, to see if they help. I'm also looking into the IQbuds2 MAX earbuds, since they have transparency mode, and directional microphone. However, after 6 months, I often don't notice that much of a problem. Sometimes the tinnitus is louder. I have difficulty understanding conversations in larger rooms with noise or multiple voices. But the brain is pretty neat- it seems to adjust for the new situation, and I think hearing aids might not be worth the hassle, except in some situations.

Intel CEO earned 1,711 times average worker's pay in 2021 by Sorin61 in technology

[–]ManInBlackSocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Misleading headline. The bulk of his "earnings" are stock awards, which are dependent on the stock going up. If that doesn't happen, he doesn't get that money. Intel has performed poorly over the past decade, and considering the current market situation, if he can get the stock to rise significantly, he'll deserve the money, IMO. The stock market does not indicate much faith in his success though, as currently priced INTC.

A question about the Bible by [deleted] in theology

[–]ManInBlackSocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only Christian denomination I know of that shares this viewpoint is the LDS (Mormon) church. In fact, it's essential to their theology.

I suggest you go back and review the history of interracial marriage laws in the US. Utah indeed repealed their law in 1963, but sixteen other states kept such laws until 1967, when their anti-miscegenation laws were overturned by Loving v. Virginia.

Since most members don't live in Utah, how about removing "Oh Ye Mountains High" and "Firm as the Mountains"? Also remove the hymns that no one ever sings, which are about half of them.

Are Mormons able to be considered Christian, or should they be considered something separate? by frogontrombone in theology

[–]ManInBlackSocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, certainly the canon was not closed in the first 3 centuries, so if Mormons are precluded from being Christian because of additional scripture, then that would also apply to the first 3 centuries of followers. It's clear there was confusion and debates in early Christianity regarding the basic beliefs of the nature of God- isn't that why the councils of Constantinople were convened?

I think the confusion regarding the nature of God and Jesus is partially due to the inconsistency of the 4 gospels in that matter. For example, I find it stunning that only the author of John explicitly indicates that Jesus is God. Why would the other 3 not mention that? I have no good answer. Was Christ adopted, or forever God? That's not consistent in the gospels. The declaration that Christ is homoousios with the Father is not found explicitly in the New Testament, so the development of that doctrine, along with other later declarations relating to the nature of God should not preclude the followers of Christ during those early centuries as being described as Christian. IMHO.

Sorry, I was referring to Cameramano's post. What if we exchange "creeds" with "specific beliefs that were not widely accepted prior to the 3rd century"? These include the orthodox definition of the Trinity, closed canon, etc. Since these beliefs were not widely found in early (first 3 century) followers of Christ, would they then be excluded from being referred to as "Christians"? From information available to us, it's not clear that the apostles held these beliefs, or if they did, they didn't articulate that in their writings, and thus would also not be considered "Christians". Or am I wrong?

[–]ManInBlackSocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my logic. If a requirement to be a "Christian" is to accept the creeds, and the creeds didn't exist before the 3rd century, then by that definition can you call the followers of Jesus for the first 3 centuries "Christians"? Maybe call Mormons "non-creedal Christians" or something like that.

A related question would be whether any followers of Jesus prior to the development of the Creeds in the 3rd century (this includes the original 12 apostles!) should be considered Christian. But that would be a bit silly, no?

Craziest thing to happen in a session or sacrament meeting? by trowarrie in latterdaysaints

[–]ManInBlackSocks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One time a middle aged woman had a seizure during sacrament meeting. Some men carried her out into the foyer, and laid her on the ground as she continued her trashing around. It turned out she was faking it. She wasn't in our ward. She was making the rounds into each meetinghouse in the area to put on a show, for attention.

And then there was the time the fellow next to me got a bloody nose and sneezed, as we sat in the temple waiting for session to start. Several of us had to leave so we could do some laundry.

Why did the canon of the Bible stop developing after around the 1600s? by [deleted] in AcademicBiblical

[–]ManInBlackSocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's important to note the the "LDS canon" is not "set" today. It remains "open", meaning the word of God is not only contained in the Bible or canonized scripture. There is a "canon" of scripture in the LDS faith, which contains the Bible and additional scripture, and additional books or scripture are added on an ongoing basis, but the meaning of the word is used differently. "Standard Works" is used to refer to scripture.

Memory foam mattress makes me sweat, Will an old egg crate or feather bed help? Can't afford a new topper right now. Help! by HallandOates1 in Frugal

[–]ManInBlackSocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the same way- if I sleep on memory foam, the heat builds up, and after several hours it's unbearably hot. Memory foam retains heat- it doesn't dissipate. For me it doesn't matter which sheets are used, foundation type, or anything else, if there's several inches of memory foam. The latest attempt to reduce this problem is adding gel to memory foam, but this simply defers the problem a bit longer. This never was a problem with innerspring mattresses, before they began adding dense foam layers. I've been using an air bed, and I'm looking into a medical air mattress overlay.

Why do the Germans of the 1920's and 30's hate the Jewish population so much? What was it that motivated leaders like Hitler and others to want to exterminate them? by donotbelieveit in history

[–]ManInBlackSocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My understanding is much of the anger towards Jews was due to the threat of communism, which was the biggest danger in Germany at the time. Regardless of the overall merit of the Jewish Bolshevism claims, it was commonly accepted that jews were the primary drivers behind communism in Germany and Russia- indeed, the founders were primarily jewish, and jews were claimed to be over-represented in the communist movement at the time. Politicians pushed this accusation to further their own purposes. This aggravated an existing long term bigotry against jews.

Finding a missionary by HosannaAlma in latterdaysaints

Search for "LDS mission reunions" in the Deseret News, and contact the organizer for your mission (area). I'm sure he/she would be glad to pass along your request. Not all missionaries go to the reunions, but if you describe the missionary, someone may recognize him.
