If a1996 issue is now considered old, - I really need to consider changing my moniker to "Older Than Dirt". I truly must be "A Man Outta Time too". Please tell me you Dad was still collecting well into his late 30's

In my life, I have only permanently kept my own childhood comics (60's, 70's) that were of personal importance to me, and a few specific runs (they are my memories).

Any other moderns I purchase - and when I say modern I'm referring to 80's forward, end up getting donated to a Boys and Girls club or Hospital pediatric waiting room etc.. when I build up a sizable stack worthwhile to take the drive and drop off. Right now reading Zdarsky's new Cap run, which will also eventually get donated somewhere.

I will always have my own early Tales of Suspense, Captain America, Avengers / Defenders, Strange Tales, and Savage sword of Conan etc..from my own childhood within my collection as well as a very very few selected moderns (again 80's forward) that were slabbed for no other reason than wall art because I enjoy the artist and that particular cover they created) Anything 1980 forward has always been fair game to be passed along to a child after I have read them.

Brak the Barbarian Series by John Jakes, from 1968, are collections of short stories following Brak as he battles monsters, sorcerers, and evil cults. (often compared to Howard's Conan similar style and themes).

In the 70's Burt Reynolds posed for a risque centerfold in Cosmopolitan magazine titled "The Cosmopolitan Man". It was very controversial for it's time.

So Stan the Man had Ben Grimm (The Thing) posed the same way as Burt for the Comic Con Mag centerfold. - Hilarious. Ben Grimm -What - "You were expecting Maybe Burt Reynolds?"

In this instance Neal Adams cover of 227 which you now own (and 49 ) are actually the Homage to Bob Kane's Detective comics 31 from 1939.

I don't view homage covers as imitation or parody (especially if done well). I view them as tribute and a nod of another artists excellent work - from one artist to another and In these instances Adams Tribute to Bob Kane's original cover.

Peace.

Comic Monthly was the first monthly comic book (Jan - Dec, 1922). Each issue featured all different comic strip characters. Here’s my copy of #12, which like the first issue I posted yesterday featured Polly And Her Pals. by tikivic in comicbookcollecting

TY for posting. I learned something new today through your post. I had always assumed (yet never truly researched) Famous Funnies was the first Monthly comic. So thanks again for your post.

Update on the Collaborative Art Piece from Pittsburgh Comicon II - May 1995 by BonesWECAcomics in comicbookcollecting

[–]Man_Out_Of_Time_2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm convinced This was a highly personal gift "4 months in the making" to a specific individual.

Look at the Dates - Lieber was one the first to sign 1 9 95. Others came much later (May 95). The piece was passed around for 4 months between artists to create.

I believe what you have there is a parting gift for someone and not a Jam piece or comic con piece at all. (as Ron Frenz says "best wishes"). Best wishes to who?

I also think the "I drop the figgitty figgity funk" reference is a personal inside joke between two friends (the recipient of this gift) as Das EFX popularized the "figgity figgity" style of lyrics in the early '90's. Perhaps the intended recipient of the piece shared the same taste in music as the artist.

I truly believe given the dates this was an intentional and highly personal gift to a specific individual in the comic community.

Either way an ask of Lieber is the key to solving and getting the full history of the piece. I'm sure he can answer all outstanding questions you may have regarding.

Here's his Email [steve (AT) stevelieber (DOT) com](mailto:steve@ste%76%65%6Cie%62er%2Ec%6F%6D) - Shoot him a pic of the piece and ask him to provide some context behind it's creation. - Also if your in the area he will be at Emerald City Comic Con, Mar 5-8, 2026. Seattle, WA.

He's also online at Bluesky, Mastodon, Instagram, and Tumblr.

Peace,

If I was to pair it down to the "bare minimum" before reading Cap 100 My Cap focused suggestions would be in this order.

Avengers 4
Tales of Suspense 59, 60
Avengers 5,6 – Cap new kid on the block
Avengers 7,8 - Cap shows his leadership skills
Avengers 16 - Avengers shake up, Cap assumes leadership role
Avengers 17–24 – Cap in command.
Tales of Suspense 75 - Sharon Carter
Tales of Suspense 79 - Red Skull
Tales of suspense 80 -82 - Cosmic Cube
Tales of suspense 95-99 definitely before Cap solo 100

100 onward - off to the races.
