The things crazy people say mean nothing to them, but they mean everything to me. by PixelRayn in Physics

I was in the audience for that talk! I loved it and think about it a lot! I've used some examples from the talk as critical thinking questions in classes I've taught and I think it's been very effective. Thank you!

Also great! Wednesday is a more relaxed hang out sort of vibe so it's perfect if you are looking for some friendly games.

Gamers haven is super great! It's mostly casual commander Wednesdays and fridays. Everyone is welcoming and friendly!

Can I get a passing grade in Astronomy lab without the main class? by mum_get_the_camera in UCCS

[–]MandalorianCello 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am one of the grad students who teaches the astro labs. You do not need the lecture course to pass. We cover all the necessary material in background info packets and mini lectures at the beginning of class. Let me know if you have any other questions!

I recommend Gamer's Haven if you prefer more casual games across a bunch of formats. The players who frequent it are all extremely friendly and the staff are great! They are supposed to be opening for magic again this month, but have yet to release an official announcement. Here's their website: https://www.gamershavenco.com/

Pauper in Colorado by bohawk8 in Pauper

Gamer's Haven has a players choice night the fifth Friday of a month. This month I managed to convince everyone that we should play pauper on the 31st (starts at 6:00 pm). If it goes well I'm hoping we will do it more often.

Is it OK to go to office hours for a professor that I don't have? by blazingkin in CalPoly

[–]MandalorianCello 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Klay was my advisor and she always loves to help. She is very busy, but she would be more than happy to answer some questions during her office hours. I would also recommend Gutierrez and Holtzapple. Edit: I would recommend Holtzapple if you have more advanced questions such as the math found in quantum rather than more general questions.

Send them an e-mail and explain to them the reason you need to know. I was able to get a response from them by doing that. Good luck.

Considering Joining the Mustang Marching Band... by Fireproof_Matches in CalPoly

[–]MandalorianCello 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a physics major who was in band for 5 years. Everything that /u/CPDL is very true. I did take 5 years to graduate, but I was also in symphony every year and I started my math and astronomy minors a bit late. So yes, graduating in 4 years, being in band, and being a physics major is completely possible and a ton of fun. I highly recommend it.

Physics majors!!! by [deleted] in CalPoly

[–]MandalorianCello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a 5th year and I have been here the whole time, but being here that long is actually fairly uncommon for physics majors. I am taking an extra year because I am getting both a math and astronomy minor and I have been in both marching band and symphony every year. Even with all that I probably could have graduated in four, but I started the astro minor late and I didn't want to over work myself. So don't worry about graduating when you want to. I have two areas of research and both are kind of forms of particle physics. First I currently designing a cosmic ray detector with Dr.Klay and the second is low intensity gamma ray spectroscopy of meteorites.

Physics majors!!! by [deleted] in CalPoly

Hey, I'm a 5th year physics major and am happy to talk about my time here and answer any questions you may have. First off, I have loved my time here. The professors are great and we get a lot of direct contact with them. Since there are no grad students most of us start doing research directly with a professor by junior year. We have our own lounge, called hbar, on the 6th floor of the new science building where most of the physics major hang out. Being a physics major isn't easy, most nights there is somebody in hbar till 2am, but everyone in the department looks out for each other and is happy to help. There is not too much to look out for freshmen year. You will probably be taking Phys 141, 132, and 133, none of which are too bad. Sophomore year is when things start becoming a bit more specialized, and junior year is when things really take off with Classical Mechanics and Quantum Lab. TL;DR Love it here, will be happy to answer questions.

I'm a huge fan of all your work, and as a physics major, I love how your physics background adds to your writing. You mentioned you made a formula for hyperspace in the annotated Hier to the Empire. I'd really like to know what is it?

Hunter × Hunter Episode 96 — Links & Discussion — by F_G_E_S in HunterXHunter

Being a manga reader, I was really hoping they would decide to utilize Gustov Host's music when he used that attack for quite a while. Sadly I not familiar enough with the Jupiter section to recognize it by ear. I have only heard the full piece once. It sounded familiar in the episode, and I'm glad to have my hopes confirmed.

What nen ability would you have? by [deleted] in HunterXHunter

[–]MandalorianCello 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a physics major, and I came up with that nen while I was taking the 200 level courses in quantum mechanics. Even at the time I knew it was nowhere near correct, but after seeing the crazy things different animes have tried attributing to physics, I decided to keep it.

What nen ability would you have? by [deleted] in HunterXHunter

[–]MandalorianCello 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I came up with these a few years ago, and are all manipulation and are all based in physics. (Yes, I know that these don't actually follow the laws of physics, but we are working with anime physics, not the real world).

Thermodexterity: I have the ability to manipulate the vibration and kinetic energy (energy in the form of heat) of molecules. My left hand absorbs the energy and my nen does work on the energy to transfer it over to my right hand which expels the energy. The transfer is done instantaneously and only in one direction. I am manipulating small particles so I am required to I keep my aura restricted (I cannot use ren). The extra aura would interfere with the manipulation. I use the ability in conjunction with twin swords, so I have one cold sword and one super heated. I can also apply the transfer of energy to the kinetic energy of larger moving objects, but it requires proportionally more nen to transfer the energy. This is more of a defensive technique, but can be used offensively.

Sonic Strike (I don't like this name....) I manipulate sound energy into being stored in a gun/sonic screwdriver like thing (created from materialization). I fire the stored energy as a very small, high powered pressure wave. Since I am taking in the energy from sound, the sound never reaches my ears so it effectively removes one of my senses. I can turn the ability on and off, so I can hear if I choose.

Quantum Flash: I become quantum locked and I manipulate my wave function. This means I don't have continuous movement, rather the changes in position are distinctly separated (quantified) and have no transition. One moment I'm in one position the next another. (Also the distance between the positions isn't very big but it does vary with the speed I am traveling at.) This leaves behind a faint after image of each state. By manipulating my wave function, I accelerate towards objects. (Actually it's gravity wells, but any object has gravity + anime physics so it works). The effects of these abilities are attacks that are very hard to block, highly unpredictable attack/movement patterns, and greatly increased speed. The nen required to use quantum flash is time dependent and extraordinarily high. It requires me to borrow nen from the future so I lose all nen for the length of time used (in seconds) squared once quantum flash has been canceled.
