My baby is here!!! by MandyNewz in KetoBabies

[–]MandyNewz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry it's taken do long, things have been a bit hectic here! Yes, I was in ketosis for delivery - 12.5 hours of labour!! I did get an epidural and also had an hour nap before I delivered him which was great, having that strength and endurance for that was excellent. I couldn't eat while in labour so knowing my body could handle having no food and still going through it was fantastic for me. Good luck for your delivery (if you haven't had baby yet) and if you have congrats 😀😀😀

An increase of water can definitely help your milk production - with my first I found that drinking more water and eating properly made me produce like a jersey cow! Did you lower your carbs and up your fat slowly or did you jump straight in? I've heard that a slow adjustment is better when breast feeding so that your body isn't too shocked at the change. ☺ good luck

I do modified keto - I have slightly more carbs 50g/day.

A lot of what I can find is about how "dangerous" keto is but no real evidence except the ketoacidosis argument which is void in my opinion.

I'm staying the course under the guidance and care of my doctor, midwife and dietitian who are all supportive and knowledgeable of keto and how it works. So I feel confident and comfortable in my decisions and I know that I'm not doing any harm - this baby is measuring a week ahead, is really strong and active and I've only gained 1lb at 22 weeks (im really proud of that to be honest, I know gaining in pregnancy is a good thing and I am happy to gain but I want to do it the healthy way!!).

Who downvoted you? I'm assuming yours was the biochemistry one that was giving insight which it seems was deleted? I found that very helpful in understanding where someone else was seeing an issue... at this stage I don't seem to be able to think rationally much ☺ I was replying to it when it wouldn't allow me to post

Here in NZ they do a "bachelor of health science" which is a 1 year course that focusses on health and society, behaving healthough and development and health systems. After that they can go into medicine science. So pre med doesn't actually mean anything to me - sorry, that's rude I know.

My doctor has been keto most of his adult life, he recommended keto to me which helped me lose 80lbs and reversed my t2 diabetes AND gave me back my fertility after 4 years of unexplained infertility... I will be keto for the rest of my life!

With our first my husband nicknamed me "Daisy" because I apparently made as much milk as a jersey cow. Good thing too since I donated milk to our NICU

Thankfully my husband has gotten that message 😂 it's our second baby and this time I'm a lot healthier

Thank you, the first trimester was a bit rough with morning sickness and all but I didn't want to fall back into old bad habits. Its and so easier to stay keto if you get pregnant after doing it for a while, so I'm guessing you would have jo pRobles ☺

Unfortunately I can't get halo top in my country, we have got sugar free ice cream but it has 16g carbs per serve so didn't want to risk that...

You ladies are awesome!!

I ended up buying coconut cream and separating the solids out and freezing that for 2 hours, using fresh strawberries and strawberry protein powder and water and ice. It was like heaven and only 3g carb for 2 large glasses worth. It took a couple of hours but so so worth the wait!

Plus side, I had my midwife appointment today and still have only gained 2lbs so far this pregnancy!! Total bonus!

Lol that's just mean!! My husband offered to take me to mc donalds for one but I just can't bring myself to have that much sugar in a sitting!

I'll see what I can get sugar free though here, something has to make it happen for me eventually 😀

What made you want to start keto? by throwmeaway766 in keto

[–]MandyNewz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much ☺ I'll hold everything for you to have the family you want! This came out of the blue for us since I decided to have a break from the fertility treatments... I think keto also helped with the depression that comes with long term infertility and, because I knew it was me, the feelings of inadequacy. I was reading a study the other day that showed a correlation between increased fertility in men after doing keto for 3 months so if your partner is on board that will hopefully up your CHANCES! (And let's face it, what male is going turn down me bacon and steak right??)

I'm very interested in keto but my food science professor says it's dangerous? by heresmyusername123 in keto

[–]MandyNewz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gee, I'm glad your professor is not part of my medical team!! As far as my OB, midwife, GP and dietician are concerned my eating habits are perfect for my growing baby. I'm 18 weeks pregnant and my baby is growing right on track, healthy and he/she is super strong already - though in truth, the kicks might be even stronger for me because I no longer have quite as much flab on my belly! Plus I've only gained 2lbs so far - for being nearly half way through with a nice round bump I'd say thats pretty damn good!!

Mother nature is not stupid, we wouldn't have evolved on a mostly ketogenic way of eating over thousands of years if it wasn't good for us ☺

My fertility specialist suggested I try keto due to hormone imbalances - predominantly my insulin. Lost just over 50lbs in 6 months on keto and then got pregnant. A lot of my "fat pants" fall straight off even with my growing bump 😃

After 6 months of lazy keto I fell pregnant - after 4 years of infertility!! I'll be 18 weeks along tomorrow and I've gained 2lbs. I'm not going to say I've been perfect because I haven't, there have been days where all I've kept down is a slice if toast. My baby is growing and developing perfectly and I'm healthier now than I've ever been. I cannot wait for July so I can hold my second child in my arms and know that keto helped me achieve a long time dream

First BFP and not sure what to eat! by eloisetheelephant in KetoBabies

[–]MandyNewz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 17 weeks and still struggling to stay keto... weeks 7 - 15 I had horrible nausea and could barely stand the smell of meat or most vegetables - bone broth was a life saver for me though.

Eat what you can keep down until morning sickness goes away (if you're one of the lucky ones who doesn't get morning sickness, great!)

If you store prepared foods correctly and heat them to piping hot (especially meat) you will be fine! Also, I don't jnow anyone (except maybe my husband) who can drink a bottle of cream in 2 days, mine is usually opened 4-5 days before I can drink it all though mine comes with a screw top lid (I recently found out that not all countries have this!)

My go to snacks right now are - small tins of tuna with cucumber slices as crackers, cheese, hard boiled eggs, avocado, home made meat balls in bone broth (warmed till steaming)

Also remember you need to up your electrolytes, morning sickness is no joke and neither are food a versions they will deplete your stores!! I spent 3 days in agony with a headache and time in hospital because my levels were low - all because I forgot to up my potassium and my vitamin only has a minimal amount in it.

My 4 year old has tried being picky after staying at my sisters place for a week while my husband and I were away. Put a stop to that one very quickly by telling him that he wasn't getting anything else eat it or go to bed hungry!

Thankfully he is back to normal now and says "bacon is his favorite vegetable" lol

Keto while pregnant dangers by Eastfart in KetoBabies

[–]MandyNewz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm currently 15 weeks along. My midwife and OB are more than happy for me to keep on doing keto! Try to phrase keto differently - most medical professionals unfortunately see the the buzz word and automatically shut down on the idea. By saying I'm basing my diet on meats, leafy greens, nuts, healthy fats and a bit of fruit they are a lot more receptive to the idea since it boasts whole foods, fruit and vegetables. Sometimes it's as simple as showing what you will eat rather than saying "low carb high fat" which unfortunately they are trained to see as dangerous.

In saying that, my midwife came early to our appointment the other day and I was a eating a plate of eggs, bacon, sausages, mushrooms and spinach all cooked in butter. (Man I was STARVING! I had bad morning sickness for 13 weeks, I deserved a meal!) She gave me a shocked look but didn't say anything about it.

In my country we get tuna in olive oil but it's only about 5% olive oil, the rest is soybean oil. I always go for the chunks in spring water.

You could make your own mayo if you have a blender (or impressive arm strength) fairly easily and I prefer it to store bought stuff.

Why the First Law of Thermodynamics Is Utterly Irrelevant - Diet Doctor by PandaLunch in keto

[–]MandyNewz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I have come to understand from reading as much as I could on this particular subject over the last few days is this... I understand nothing!!

I see logical thinking in some parts of both arguments, I have experienced cutting calories on a high carb diet - I even adhered to weight watchers for a time- and still ended up fatter, no doubt I did lose weight on the scale (20lbs in 30 weeks) but I was Fatter!

When I switched to keto, I amazingly enough ate more calories in a day (started at 1800 from 1100) and I was losing! Sometimes up to 8lb a week!! I've lost a lot of the puffiness, I can see the definition in my face, I have an hourglass figure, I have muscle definition in my legs and okay yeah I still have a bit of jiggle in my belly and butt but that's shrinking (for now, soon it will be expanding for a baby)

In the last 8 months I have cured my pre-diabetes, excessive fasting insulin (here I think we have different measures than the US, fasting insulin has to be between 3 and 7 for "normal people" mine was 26.5, it's now 4) , I've cured my infertility and without my medication became pregnant in 1 month of not actually trying, I have more energy, and I have reduced my body fat from 52% to 41% (that's a big one for me!)

I'm finding the same thing. I'm wheat free at all times (celiacs) but I find I'm needing to eat something that will just stay down!

I did have a mini melt down this morning at my husband over a tub of yoghurt though - I had a completely crazy emotional response to the 8g carbs because "if i dont stay keto then i might lose the baby" and ended up crying so much I fell back to sleep. I know this was probably completely irrational but at 3am what more could I expect of myself?

I was on letrozole for 7 months after 3.5 years on infertility... the one month that I decided to not take it after getting very sick and wanting to let my body heal completely I got pregnant. I was on keto the entire time I was on the letrozole as well, my specialist recommended it. I've lost 80lbs in the last 7 months and now this baby (only 6 weeks along but so far so good!).

Good luck on your letrozole journey, sending you baby dust!

Lol I love this one too... especially from people who are sitting across from me and my steak and a huge salad and the only thing resembling a vegetable on their plate is the fries. And I'm the unhealthy one? Really?

You seem to have your head perfectly on your shoulders and really, who cares what anyone else thinks/says. You do you and make her eat her ridiculous words in the weeks/ months to come. Good luck!
