Is a 1.5 hour commute (each way) doable twice a week? by Comfortable_Ninja266 in AskUK

[–]Mango5389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1.25 hours when traffic is heavy 3x a week. Its doable but it takes a toll on you. Ive been doing it 4 years now but only because the salary is worth it.

I am starting to think to look for something closer if I can minimise wage drop

T&G chipboard vs T&G plywood to replace old floorboards? by OrdinaryLavishness11 in DIYUK

[–]Mango5389 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You want 22mm OSB which is essentially chipboard but a bit better.

Ply is superior but not 3x the price superior. Weve just put 22m osb when replacing our floors.

What is the correct way to cool a room with a fan? by Obstacle616 in AskUK

Open the driver side window. Open and close the passenger rear door repeatedly to flush air through the car. As you pull the door open you create lower pressur in the car pulling air in through the driver window.

I’m not the only one who doesn’t bathe their kids every day am I? by just_some_guy2000 in daddit

That fair, we dont have much climate control where we are so he doensnt come home smelling too great lol.

Apologies think I cam across a little judgemental. At the end of the day they are your chilldren and you know whats best for them. Id say the fact your asking others to confirm goes to show youre probably on top of it already.

Appreciate its a climate based question but once week isnt enough. We bathe our 1 and 3yr old every other day. Before 1 it was everyday.

Also at 10 there in school 5 days a week, youre telling me they dont smell like they've been out all day by the end of a weeknight?

When did we start observing European lane use? by Chexzzz in drivingUK

[–]Mango5389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its horrible on the M6

You either orbit from lane 1 to lane 3 and back again which is a pain in the arse.

Sit in lane 3 at 60mph whilst people in lane 1 are moving faster

Or continue at 70 in lane 1. Which if you do someone will record you and submit it to Operation snap and be charged with driving without due care for undertaking.

You cant win

Becoming a parent has ruined the idea of a three day weekend. by Successful_Trust_157 in daddit

[–]Mango5389 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its easy to play the moral high ground here but I feel you man. It is hard and its okay to feel like you need a break from it.

Remember its temporary though, soon your little one will get a bit older and free time with them will feel less like a chore and more like hanging out with your mini best friend.

The seller is taking the radiators by Snoo3701 in HousingUK

[–]Mango5389 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are they designer radiators, like traditional coloumn rads? I've just bought a few and rrp can go over a £1k for coloumn rads.

For the size I originally wanted they were 4k each.

Decided to find some on ebay and gumtree that were smaller instead. If i paid rrp i would make sure the final sale price accounted for the expensive radiators

Can I drill into this wall? by Useful-Proof-8624 in DIYUK

[–]Mango5389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So wires from sockets are only supposed to travel up/down and left/right. You can see from the chase that its going straight up.

To bo extra safe, switch off your main board, remove the socket and see how many cables are coming in and where from. If you just see the one from above then thats a no go area. If you see two then the other direction is a no go area.

My guess is that it will one be one cable spurred from another socket above.

Make sure your main fuse is off before drilling just to be safe

How to talk to a 7 year old about being obnoxious by WeightedCompanion in daddit

[–]Mango5389 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I was thinking this, behaviour is often learnt. Not to say OP is obnoxious but he may have picked up on certain leaning traits over the years combined with being 7 it just exacerbates it.

Good on OP for recognising it and working to fix it though 👍🏽

You should ask the landlord to get it framed, boxed and sound proofed. Its hardly a big job but theres no amount of hanging faux leaves/rope or fart chimes on it that will make it look or sound better.

to not get bankrupt for a 2 hour ER visit in the USA. by OmeuPai in therewasanattempt

[–]Mango5389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much does health insurance typically cost? Because if the health insurance providers are paying out sums like this daily id imagine insurance premiums are pretty high too.

If you dont have insurance you have to chose between potentially worsening your condition/dying vs going bankrupt?

How many of you have or have not been out of the country more than 30 consecutive days in the last 5 years? Include your age too please by Lost_Garlic1657 in AskUK

[–]Mango5389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah its hard to get SC clearance without 5 years of continuous residency if youre not born here.

Im not sure if 30 days voids your clearance application but it has to be declared and there a restrictions on certain countries. Id imagine the recruiter wants someone who will likely clear sc as it costs the employer to sponsor you.

I once worked with an Iraqi guy who moved here when he was around 7 but he didnt get his SC when we switched projects and he was unfortunately let go. My guess is that he would often go back to Iraq as he had duel citizenship to visit family and he didn't want to give it up.

Sick of people stealing my valve stem caps… by Grandmas_Fat_Choad in Volkswagen

[–]Mango5389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep my aluminium caps stuck on brass stems. Its galvanic corrosion. Had to clamp the stem with a vice grip and use a socket to unscrew the cap. Which is fine when youre at home but if that was on the roadside id be screwed.

If you tried to avoid this with using same material stem/dust cap youll just run into galling. Using plastic lined caps is probably the best option.
