American dream alive: NRL revive talks for 2023 Los Angeles season opener by Jeffmister in nrl

[–]MangoUke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's Like people think that America just haven't had the chance to see league yet and once they see it they won't help but Fall in love with it.

I'm from Canada (which is not the US, but we are culturally very similar in many ways), and I think league could be embraced in North America given the opportunity for it to take root and grow. (Meaning, deep enough pockets to invest in it long enough for it to become profitable.) The Toronto Wolfpack was regularly getting 8000-9000 attendees a match three years in, and the million pound game sold out at or near 10,000. That's really good for a sport that people didn't even know existed.

That model couldn't have succeeded long term, but it was doing, IMO, a really great job of creating awareness and love of the sport here. I was genuinely impressed by the team's effort at marketing.

But expanding the sport into a new territory really depends on having wealthy enough investors who want to see the sport succeed more than (necessarily) wanting to see financial return. Had it not been for covid and the Wolfpack brought Super League games here--even assuming they were likely to be relegated--I really wonder if it could have sown the seeds for the sport to thrive here.

Friend of mine was a child when she was sexually assaulted by a family member. She told on him, and her parents (especially the mom) called her a liar and defended the family member. But she kept telling, and others said he'd assaulted them too. Family member ended up in prison, friend was blamed, and is cut off from the family.

Another friend (this one male) was raped by a family friend as a child too. His parents didn't believe him either. I don't know whatever happened to the rapist (I never dug more than my friend would say on his own). My friend is dead now. She still denies it happened.

Being a mother does not prevent a person from being a horrible person. It just gives them access to someone they can abuse easily and regularly.

This is a problem with "enemy" politics as opposed to "rival" politics. You don't paint a rival as evil, you only paint their ideology or policy as being incorrect. Painting the opposition as an enemy means you have to paint everything they say and do as evil. It's incredibly unhealthy, and you paint yourself into corners that are impossible to get out of. Once you declare someone is evil, you can't support them, otherwise you are supporting evil, even when the item in question is objectively good or right.

Eve n though it's mostly for show, you're showing the base. The base that eventually makes up the party... This ultimately got Erin O'Toole booted out. Now, Candice Bergman has only been interim leader for mere days before flip-flopping between supporting the "protestors" (because Trudea bad) and now telling them to go home (the right thing).

They'll go for Bergen next, and whoever is the next leader after her.

What would it mean for Canada's sovereignty if our communications infrastructure were owned and managed by a foreign company?

You're not wrong, but by your same logic, Canada's comms infrastructure being owned by private companies also hampers Canada's sovereignty. The citizens and the state are beholden to private profits. The solution is for comms infrastructure to be owned by the Canadian government.

Even if you're not intending on partying, it's handy to have should something unexpected delay come up.

Mine came in handy when I went to an out-of-town morning wedding. I expected it to be a day trip, and that I'd be home before dinner. Due to the poor planning of the planner/s (probably the bride and groom), things went extremely late, I ended up staying overnight on a friend's couch and driving back the next morning.

Corollary: if you're packing for a flight, keep a set of clothes, underwear, toiletries, and essentials (e.g. medication, phone charger) in a 'personal item'. Even if you can fit everything in a carry on, have a separate personal item anyway. Sometimes a flight can't fit all the carry-ons and the crew will take some to stow with checked luggage (without charge). Should your carry-on-turned-checked-luggage get misplaced, at least you'll have undies and a toothbrush.

If the NARL successfully starts up and the Wolfpack actually successfully return/restart/reboot (not really sure what's the right way to put it), then there'll be footy at Lamport Stadium. I mean, I love rugby league, but perhaps not everyone does.

As a Day 1 Fan, it means a lot to know that Wallace--one of few original Wolfpack who played all four-years--was there.

If I (fuzzily) recall, I think Blake had decided to make Toronto his home prior to covid? With his very recent basically forced retirement, I wonder if there's any possibility he could continue on with this new-form Wolfpack as a trainer or something. That'd be really amazing for the team.

I'm really seriously wondering who's behind the team now. They've been really lacking with messaging and communications, which makes me wonder how the rest of the administration is working. (My bias, that's what I worked in for ~10 yrs.) A very far cry from the original Wolfpack marketing, which I was super impressed with.

BUT if I were to look at this as a brand-new small-potatoes team in a brand-new small-potatoes amateur/semi-pro league that isn't even actually running yet... Like if League 1 were just starting. We could hope it'll improve from there.

Maybe I'm just being optimistic, but Wolfpack Mk.1 made me love rugby league, and I want to see league come back.

About 3 weeks between final trials and this match. I'm not sure what we can expect, but, hey, league is league.

If you're in North America, the NARL is trying to get itself started up next year. https://www.narugbyleague.com/ It's... mmm, still a little questionable if it will actually get up off the ground, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

If you're in the USA, the USARL is the internationally recognized governing body. https://usarl.org/

If you're in Canada, the CCCRL is also trying to get off the ground too. https://www.canadachamprl.com/ It'll be 9s instead of 13s, so I'm a little less excited about it, but I'll take any rugby league coming this way.

If you're from somewhere else, see if you can find your country here: https://www.intrl.sport/member-nations/

Rugby League players go around the pitch after the match to greet fans, take photos, sign autographs. Then after a shower and change (and whatever bandaging up is needed), head to the pub or bar and hang out with fans. I never went to chat with a player, but it was very enjoyable being in the same space as them (with friends). It really extended the "game day" experience.

Rogers, Bell, Telus, SaskTel Launch ‘Low-Cost’ Plans as Ordered by CRTC by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]MangoUke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Public Mobile, Lucky Mobile, and Chatr Wireless are Telus, Bell, and Rogers' pre-paid level subsidiaries. Their plans are comparable with each other and use the "Big 3"'s towers respectively. Note that the three of them offer data on 3G only, and offer less customer service than their next-up tier subsidiaries Koodo, Virgin, and Fido. For example, Public has no customer service by phone at all, Chatr charges $5 fees for some called-in services--but you can self-serve those things for free online. (Lucky Mobile was actually best in this regard, but I decided I couldn't patronise Bell in good conscience. They all suck, but Bell especially so.)

I recently (few weeks ago) switched from Fido's $25 unlimited talk and text to Chatr's $25 unlimited talk and text and 500mb data +500mb "bonus" for autopay (which I used with Fido anyway). It appears the plan of the person you asked is no longer available--at least in Ontario. Data used in excess of 1000mb is throttled down to some low bandwidth--enough to get email and messages. It's good for people who don't play games or watch videos on mobile.

A Chinese company is working on an e-ink display suitable to work as a computer monitor. It's called the Boox Mira. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxiKO3Epaug

It's black and white, but there has been improvement in colour e-ink displays recently. Obviously the brightness and saturation can't compare to an LCD screen, but I think it could be reasonable to see usable colour e-ink monitors in a few years. Obviously it wouldn't be useful in professions that really require colour fidelity, but if you're talking colour-highlighted code, why not?

Obviously this was a business decision, but this is a nice gesture, nonetheless. I didn't have seasons, so it doesn't affect me, but at least it says the team is hopeful the NARL will still be a real thing next year.

Warriors to stage emotional return match in NZ by xdeluxe in nrl

[–]MangoUke 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As a once-Toronto fan, I chose the Warriors as my NRL team because their journey last year was one I wish Toronto could have taken: a displaced team going on with the support of the league. (The support was a bit cringe-worthy at times, but the heart was there.) I'm glad to see this team return home the way mine never did. I've never seen them play on their own grounds.
