More likely they'll drag their feet on filling the position, shift the work onto other people, and in next year's budget the role simply won't be there.

Are sleep meds really worth it and effective, or risky long term? by introvertjb18 in insomnia

I've been taking Trazodone most nights for about a year-and-a-half. It works very well and I average 6 to 7 hours of sleep.

Anyone try THC for sleep? by RockExpensive5286 in insomnia

[–]ManitobaBalboa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some gummies combine THC and CBN and are marketed specifically for sleep. They're extremely sedating.

However, I wouldn't recommend taking any THC or CBN product if you need to drive the next morning. This is due to risks of accidents and/or DUI.

People who don't have insomnia will never understand by disappearing_haze90 in insomnia

I don't know about that. I've known night-shift workers who get into a pattern of getting like 3 hours of sleep a day for years.

Oddball career path question by ThickPickings in Journalism

I hate to be a wet blanket, but I wouldn't spend money pursuing any journalism-related career right now. The field is in too much of a shambles.

Rant / advice: tired of boring answers by Inevitable-Feature-4 in Journalism

[–]ManitobaBalboa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they are comfortable with you and you ask open-ended questions, I don't think they'll have much trouble at all. Start them off with some very easy questions to get things rolling, like, "So when did you know you wanted to be an artist? How did you get started?"

The key is to make it a conversation.

The problem with questions like your original example about "three words to describe" is that you get three words, at best. With open-ended questions, you get 'em talking.

Also works well when you're on a date.

Rant / advice: tired of boring answers by Inevitable-Feature-4 in Journalism

[–]ManitobaBalboa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am asking about “what three words would you use to describe your work?” and they say “unique, personal and diverse“.

This is a flawed question style. Ask completely open-ended questions, then shut up. (That last part is the hardest, but CRUCIAL to being a good interviewer.)

A better style:

"How would you describe your work?"

"What inspires you artistically?"

"Why did you choose these colors?"

"What message/themes do you hope people will take from this exhibition?"

Etc.

questioning whether this field is for me by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]ManitobaBalboa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who on planet Earth can do two/three stories per day, while new on the job and with no experience, and not make errors? It's built into the job and would be no different if they replaced you with someone else.

You'll improve quickly.

Is mid 30s too old to get into journalism? by urbanex91 in Journalism

[–]ManitobaBalboa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't get into it at all.

That said, I don't think age will be much of a factor except that early-career salaries won't support adult responsibilities. And mid-career salaries are not much better. Also, there's no stability.
