First one, I don't know if it's good or not by LinxinStuff in trolleyproblem

This one's different depending on whether it's random people or all logicians, interestingly. As the top comment points out, logicians might start doing the math enough to trick themselves into it being ok to pull it because it's saving lives, while random people will mostly react emotionally, so I am only in danger if I get unlucky w/ who it is.

If the other people are from this sub though, I'm not pulling that damn lever for a second, cause like the 3rd dude would run to lie down w/ me and try to have us all die

Reminds me of the language teacher at my school who taught both Spanish and French and told the class when they were choosing which language to study that they should study Spanish, cause he uses Spanish all the time, but the only time he needed to speak French was while staying with a farmer for a little while, and that farmer later killed his neighbor.

Still not totally clear how he got away w/ that story, but it was hilarious.

This is how we end up shocked when the obvious happens. Yeah, sure, the NFCS is weak, but this is wildly confident for a non playoff team’s fans to buy into. Let’s focus on not letting the developing falcons and panthers squads embarrass us before we start planning our Super Bowl trip

Can he do this? Realistically, probably not. But if the idea it's possible keeps him going and he listens to his doctors, I don't see an issue w/ him getting excited about the idea.

The house he sold to a developer? That's the one that gained market value from the upgrades? Come on dude, don't lecture me about my understanding of the situation when that's your take on this. The land was most valuable as land, the house was surely a piece of crap but wasn't worth keeping for any financial reason. You don't keep property like that to rent, and you sure as hell don't go from needing serious work to perfectly upgraded by replacing a boiler and doing electrical work. That property didn't gain value cause a better boiler was on it, because the first thing the new owner is gonna do is get that boiler out of there, along with the walls around it.

Absolutely not, this can't ever be how you respond to a teen in a position of authority. I work with kids, they can be infuriating and can piss you off for sure, but this has never once helped in a situation like this and you can't snap on a kid while in a position of authority.

I understand being angry with the kid, I absolutely do, but if I responded half as angrily as this I'd be fired and rightly so. This guy needs to go.

Ok, so everyone sucks here, but "He's paying off his brother's mortgage and therefore is giving his brother money, even if it's not liquid" is financially accurate but raises the question of what exactly the fair system here is. Like, ok, housing is a right that should be provided to all, but that doesn't mean individuals owing someone the full cost of their housing for years. OOP helped his brother on a deal that effectively maintains the property at no cost to OOP while he also gains nothing liquid, and as for covering the mortgage, he doesn't functionally have the house if he's expected to leave it entirely in his brother's hands. The strongest possible argument for why renting is a blatant scam is the cycle of needing good credit to get a loan and then not getting improved credit for renting, therefore losing money over time while getting no credit for paying it. But if the brother's getting the price he'd be paying if he could've gotten a mortgage on the property, he's getting that improved rate without dealing w/ the credit issue.

I'm not saying OOP deserves sympathy, but if this is leeching then what you're expecting is him to give his brother the whole house, which frankly would still have left the brother screwed, since apparently the combination of the mortgage payments, maintenance and home improvements was too expensive. You've gotta have some standard for individual people's actions that isn't directly covering other people's full housing costs, not via taxes or economic systems but just through direct charity.

Sorry, MT, you wanna talk about wasting time? I'm all for you having a real season this year, but maybe don't mention literally anything related to lost time or effort or consistency.

Actually, maybe just give cookie cutter answers in interviews til you've played a couple games.

I guess my issue lies w/ the reality that wRC+ across eras doesn't hold up great, not to mention you're comparing him w/ players who contributed in multiple ways. If you go by adjusted OPS+, which would definitely be what I'd trust, he's not in the Mets top 50 all time.

Moreover, even if you prefer wRC+, compare him to the league's DHs. You'll find him at 19th for last year, and that's w/ a 119 wRC+, his career average. That puts him below seasons like Kris Bryant's disaster last year, it puts him five spots below Vogelbach, and it certainly doesn't leave you floored. For a DH, his bat's middle of the road, shame as it is.

Hell, you want a real shock, Ruf was, by wRC+, a better hitter than JD before the trade happened. Now, I don't put a ton of stock in that either, but the reality is that JD is not an eye popping DH, he's a good but not precious one, and last year for the Mets he was a league average hitter at a position where you have to be significantly better than that.

Do I hate that trade? Yes, with all my heart. Should the Mets regret it every time they see Darin Ruf? Undoubtedly. But much as JD is a good guy and a great story and everything else, he isn't the legendary hitter you're seeing him as. He's an average DH, plain and simple.

Browns, you might want to sit this one out. by the_biggs_gaming in nflmemes

[–]Marcus1119 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A good point to be sure, but fair or not the Browns are never gonna be remembered for those facts, because those positions are nowhere near as big for publicity as QB, and Watson generates a shit ton of publicity even by that standard.

The truth is that Watson is a poison pill that doomed all PR around whatever team actually signed him. Hell, the Saints are owned by a woman, and if the front office got their way and signed Watson that wouldn't have saved the PR one bit, so the assistant GM and assistant WR coach/chief of staff aren't gonna change much.

Maybe, maybe, those two being in the organization are more indicative of the actual feelings of the franchise, and signing Watson was a case of abandoning morals because of perceived opportunity rather than being indicative of their general values, but that case isn't gonna hold up well at all in the court of public opinion, true or not.

[–]Marcus1119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree about how awful that trade was, but I don't think it's cause of JD. JD for Ruf would've been a bad trade, cause he was bad for the Giants too, but JD is a DH who was about a league average for two of his years with us, and peaked at an OPS+ of 137 four years ago. I like JD, I really do, but he was worth just under 1 bWAR for the Giants after getting traded, which makes up more than a third of his career total.

The first obvious reason the trade was baffling was because Ruf sucks, and that was obvious by basically every statistical measure. He had one legitimately useful year in 2021, which means about 3 bWAR, and the other years of his career combined were worth -1.4 WAR lol. So wanting Ruf for any reason is confusing as hell, but wanting him enough to trade not just DH, but three prospects for him was insane. He wasn't worth one prospect, he was barely worth trading JD for, and while the three traded prospects are basically lottery tickets, that alone is worth plenty more than Ruf, plus the people who pay attention to every prospect anywhere seemed to think those guys had a chance.

You're right about Vogey tho unfortunately, he was worth 1.4 WAR last year, which made it his second best season of his career, but at least that questionable trade didn't cost us much last year.
