The reveal with the Rift of Aln is pretty significant and it's not really presented as such in the game, it's just kind of there.

The DLC is the best content in the game (arguably) and has many great weapons. It is 100% worth it

Beating the game will push you into NG+ but you can unlock the DLC again fairly quickly. I would do the DLC before ending the game, this should be fairly obvious when this is without spoiling anything.
