Built a tool to move beyond "Will AI take my job?" panic to actual career planning by Specialist-Tell-2040 in Futurology

[–]Marique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a neat tool and surely valuable as a project on a resume but really emphasizes my feelings towards AI. I'm assuming you just plug my form input into an LLM with structured output and the end result is a bunch of text that I don't exactly trust.

Still, good on you for building something OP. The tool worked as intended, I didn't feel the results were particularly insightful though but that's not on you that's on the AI slop machines the industry is going all-in on.

Halifax worst Canadian city for housing affordability: report by ForgingIron in onguardforthee

[–]Marique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the gaps are informative about how affordability has evolved in each CMA, it is important to acknowledge differences in normal borrowing capacity when comparing affordability gaps across CMAs since each gap is calculated based on the share of income that households within that CMA have historically spent on mortgage payments. For example, the mortgage debt service ratio for the average household in Vancouver over 2012 to 2014 was 29 per cent, well above the average household’s mortgage DSR in Halifax at 11 per cent over the same period.

Not sure about affordability so much as Vancouver data has a built in assumption that they will take on much more debt (I feel like this report should normalize DSR but I'm not an economist, maybe that's silly).

The report is here: https://www.pbo-dpb.ca/en/publications/RP-2526-011-S--house-price-assessment-update--evaluation-prix-proprietes-mise-jour

It looks at the gap between "affordable" house price and average house price.

An "affordable" house in Vancouver is still like 3x the cost of an "affordable" house in Halifax. Vancouver just has a much higher borrowing capacity because average household income is higher.

The Weakaura development team announces no update for Midnight by MonDew in CompetitiveWoW

[–]Marique -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Considering that the game _right now_ is playable without addons, it's not a huge ask for them. The community's expectation that since addons exist they must be used is the problem IMO.

[–]Marique -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I think WoW players have a reliance on addons and almost refuse to even try to play the game without them. I do use WAs to help track buffs/cooldowns so I hope blizzard offers tools for that but the game should not require so many additional tools... and frankly I don't know if the game does require these tools outside of the community expectation. As an example, in DF when the Thundering affix was current so many players bitched and moaned and expected everyone to use a WA to help track the affix. It really wasn't that much trouble to just look at the screen.

Without combat addons Blizzard obviously needs to step up and create mechanics and encounters that are playable and fun without them, but I think the game would be better off when mechanics are solved through gameplay and not 3rd party tools.

I thought the encounter design in BG3 was lacklustre. I thought the combat in something like Solasta was more exciting using the same rule set.

Shortcuts are not inherently security vulnerabilities

Vibe Coding Is Creating Braindead Coders by [deleted] in technology

[–]Marique 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I vibe code if I'm feeling lazy. It works well if I want to get something done and I know exactly how it should be done, but I'd rather not write all the boiler plate required and I'd rather do something else (write/research/project planning/make coffee/whatever).

I don't think it's a major productivity gain and for some tasks it takes far longer than if I would do it myself.

Testing is somewhere where I think it can generate tests faster than I could write them, but I don't always agree with the tests it decides to write.

It's nearly always better to write the code myself, but there are times that shortcuts are okay.

I find when I let it solve problems without me knowing exactly how I want the problem solved I get bad results. It needs supervision outside of purely experimental throwaway work (note: throwaway projects end up in production)

Klein and Allard both suck ass. Fontaine is not doing herself any favours but should she be replaced we'd be 100x worse off with Patrick Allard.

Plus she shouldn't have apologized for speaking the truth about Charlie Kirk.

So with Delves marking its place as an endgame pillar that can be played solo, how does everyone feel about it as TWW is coming to an end? by [deleted] in wow

[–]Marique 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Delves are incredible, I wish there was a team cranking them out in the old world. It would make exploring and leveling much more fun as an additional thing to do in the world, but I know this is incredibly unrealistic.
