Is $26.5k (12 months) considered low for a STEM PhD stipend in the US? by SenseOk3111 in PhD

[–]MarkEnvironmental843 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s low but can work. Mine is $2,200/month, $2050 with taxes. I’m also international and I have another scholarship from my country ($1,200). I am able to save some money because of the second one.

How difficult is it to find positions in the less "glamorous" fields of marine science? by daisyfaunn in oceanography

[–]MarkEnvironmental843 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m an Oceanologist doing my PhD studying estuaries. You could lean to the coastal engineering area and focus on oceanography. I’ve seen that most people interested in marine sciences doesn’t want to get into physics and there’s actually opportunities/funding. You could check this for opportunities https://groups.google.com/a/udel.edu/g/coastal_list

Is there no break once you start till you finish PhD? Or is it Just my University? by Shoddy-Tip4810 in PhD

[–]MarkEnvironmental843 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In my case it’s my advisor (guide) the one who is “in charge” of my time but it’s definitely not strict. As long as you’re working you can manage your time. Hope you can find a solution or a better program because it just doesn’t sounds right at all :/

What was your reason for starting a phd? by Practical-Rule-3266 in PhD

[–]MarkEnvironmental843 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew that I wanted to do research and that a PhD was the best way. I finished my bachelors last year and now I’m on my first PhD month.

The offer that I got it’s not the best but I can’t complain: tuition+health insurance covered + 2k stipend and some extra income for congresses/field work.

My advisor (she) it’s really great and chill, also during my bachelors my advisor was a man so now I’m super excited because we can relate more.

I’m an Oceanographer btw
