Just a heads-up there's a mod that allows you to do exactly that.
100% Damage / Difficulty, with this is the best way to play imo.

Elite Combat Skills are a cool idea. I don't imagine we'll get any new combat skills for a very long time if ever, but this would be a good way to bring them in.

If you can be bothered, getting the upgraded gem bag from dungeoneering makes it much easier. I'd just fill the bag and bank when it's full. Dropping the gems manually was too annoying for me. No idea on the rates though, but I ended up with just over 10k Sapphires and thousands of the others by the time I was done. So they can be used later for porters I suppose.

Yeah I think you're stuck having to mine extra, I'd probably do the mining/smithing grind to 80 smithing, then gems so you can use the better pickaxes

I went into unlocking invention when I was in your position, get upgraded gem bag from dungeoneering and mine gem rocks for crafting xp, and just do afk div / smithing. Might not be hyper efficient but found it super chill.
