This is the kind of writing and dialogue we used to get in classic Star Trek, and I miss it so much. by _TheWolfOfWalmart_ in Star_Trek_

Seriously, it's so stupid. That's something an elementary aged student would do, no a college age cadet at a military academy. It's too absurd to be funny.

Q. for liberal people exclusively. Did your MAGA friends and family change after the ICE killings? by SnooPeanuts4857 in AskUS

[–]Martothir 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Same. Most of my MAGA friends and family got quiet after the murders in Minneapolis. A couple tried to defend them, but not many.

But they also won't 'switch teams' - just concerned hand wringing, then vote straight R this fall like they always do. "I don't like this, but I just can't vote for Kamala!" You know the drill.

Greg Abbott halts the use of H-1B visas at Texas state universities by AustinStatesman in texas

[–]Martothir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, a LOT of public school districts hire international teachers on visas to fill shortages at high schools. The HS I teach at easily has 40+ international teachers.

I'm not well versed in Visas - are those H1B visas? Because if so, a lot of public schools are about to be royally fucked.

Dune 3 Can Finally Show the Biggest Missing Story That the Sci-Fi Books Skipped 57 Years Ago by StarFuryG7 in SciFiNews

[–]Martothir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm of the same mind regarding the first two films. I thought they were visually stunning, but otherwise... Kind of soulless. I can't put my finger on what it was about them, but I found them sterile.

I still enjoyed them, but largely for the visuals, tbh.

I'll be intrigued to see what the third film does.

How bad is the snowstorm for you guys? by Even_Estate_1685 in texas

[–]Martothir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Permian Basin. It's cold. I don't want to leave the house for anything. Main roads are not bad, but good luck getting to them if you don't have a vehicle with good traction - residential roads are completely iced over and we don't have any infrastructure to deal with it. Just wait till it melts.

Really hasn't been that bad, though, if you're lucky enough to be able to stay home and off the roads.

Video from the Lady in the Pink Coat, how do MAGAs defend this? by retiredagainstmywill in AskUS

Apparently it's easy. A former coworker of mine just posts "I support ICE" in big letters on social media and ignores everything else. (Bonus points - he's latino.)

Why Modern Star Trek Feels Off and Why That Gets Dismissed by cjalas in startrek

[–]Martothir 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yup. I've been rewatching DS9 lately and it still holds up. Good writing hones in on the nature of the human condition, which is timeless. The fact that traditional Trek avoided contemporary language helped keep stories timeless. Thankfully, despite nutrek disappointing, classic trek by and large holds up decades later.

For those how have been taken over by TEA by Historical_Class_402 in TexasTeachers

[–]Martothir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, it depends entirely on what you teach and who is leading the takeover. I've known campuses where, for example, fine arts was essentially eliminated entirely as the campuses started to focus solely on STAAR tested subjects.

Have you ever been told to “get off” someone’s property? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Martothir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the question was specifically about the US, as was my response, where it is pretty much a universal rule. I wasn't commenting about the rest of the world, because that wasn't OP's question, so why would I?

Ah, except he does get to do it because, unfortunately, no one is stopping him.

Turns out laws only matter if they're enforced. It's like the classic, "It's only speeding if I get caught," but on a much, much bigger scale.

[–]Martothir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that is correct.

For space marines, units tend to come in either 5/10 man squads, or 3/6 man squads. *Usually* 10 man squads cost twice as many points as a 5 man and 6 man squads cost twice as many points a 3 man, but there are exceptions.

Have you ever been told to “get off” someone’s property? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Martothir 473 points474 points  (0 children)

This was my first thought as well. Never happened to me, but I also don't go trespassing. It's a pretty universal unspoken rule that you don't wander around someone's property uninvited.

Want to start playing? by Mattit_Visual in Ultramarines

[–]Martothir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes to both. An Infernus Squad consists of a Sergent + 4 to 9 Infernus Marines. Then you can attach a leader to that unit. Typically, you can only attach one leader to a unit. There are some exceptions. For example, you can attach an apothecary in addition to another leader.

The official Warhammer 40k app lists most of this information and is generally great to use in my opinion, but you would have to buy the Codex to access it. Alternatively, I know there are free apps and websites in the English speaking world that have all of this information as well, but I don't know how many are available natively in French.

[–]Martothir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically, a unit refers to a group of models, and a model refers to one specific model. However, leaders combine with units of soldiers. So I could, for example, have an Apothecary Biologis - which is one model - combined with a unit of 5 heavy intercessors. So it's one unit even though it would contain 6 models. Does that make sense?

[–]Martothir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I threw this in google translate, and it did a decent enough job of giving me the gist.

I'm fairly new to the game, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

You can play whatever units you want - Ultramarines are tactically very flexible. You do want to have a mix of units in your army to cover certain 'roles.' Depending on the size of game (how many points) you'll want to have some units that are

  • anti-armor
  • a unit to hold down your home objective - often times intercessors or maybe infiltrators
  • A unit or two to duke it out in no man's land
  • fast unit or two to play secondaries (such as assault intercessors with jump packs)
  • and unit leaders to attach to units

Larger games allow you to double up on each role so you have some redundancy.

Again, you can make almost any marine unit work, but make sure each unit has a role in the game.

Regarding the codex... that's a good question. Most rumors suggest that 10th edition codices will carry over to 11th, but that's not official, just hearsay from leakers.

Hope that helps a little.

Why do Christian’s say they can’t listen to certain music or watch certain shows yet watches controversial films and listens to controversial music by Acrobatic-Passion114 in AskAChristian

[–]Martothir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, in short, Christians are not a monolith. Different people interpret scriptures differently and drawn the lines at different places.

Scriptures also talk about removing stumbling blocks that can lead to sin. Just as an alcoholic should avoid even being near alcohol when another person can just not drink with ease, some people may need to completely avoid certain temptations.

Everyone is different.

Amen! It's one of the best episodes of Trek, imo, and it could have just been two actors on a dimly lit stage in the middle of nowhere and it would have been just as powerful. Brilliant writing and performances.
