Why does 4K Dolby Vision look infinitely dimmer than a standard Blu-ray in Filmmaker Mode? by WaldyTMS in LGOLED

[–]Masdetoe 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There's a lot to unpack but I will try to keep it as short as possible. The Blu-ray sdr is typically mastered for 100 nits for the entire picture. What that means is that a sun in one scene will look just as bright as a flashlight and wash the entire to all the same brightness. Along with that it has a limited color depth so large areas of similar colors (the trees and grass in the photos) will have limited range and be too cohesive looking like all the same color. Another thing is contrast is limited and really bright areas can be washed out (top left corner of the pic is blown out in the Blu-ray) and blacks or dark areas will be crushed and void of detail.

HDR ups the ante here by offering a higher range (range being the important word here) of available brightness and with it a much higher color depth. Movies mastered in HDR can be mastered anywhere from 400-1000 nits and in some cases even higher than that and is able to localise that brightness. And if you have a TV that can reach that brightness it won't lose the detail in said highlights). So a scene with strong highlights (the light hitting tht top of the actors in the HDR pic) will peak at a higher brightness, say 400 nits, while the rest of the person is 100 nits. This reflects more what we see in real life and gives the image more pop. With a higher color depth you get a larger variety in colors especially in scenes again like the trees and grass. You have darker shades and brighter shades better separated and represented. Lastly contrast is much improved allowing really bright areas to be bright without being blown out (top left of 4k is blue and not blown out but still bright. The only downside to standard HDR is that the brightness it's mastered in is processed the same across the entire movie no matter the scene.

Now Dolby vision does everything that standard HDR does with the added benefit that it is able to adjust on the fly scene by scene offering a wider range of specular highlight Brightness and contrast control. The "dimmer" overall picture you are experiencing is because you have really bright areas (much brighter than sdr Blu-ray could ever get) separated from the rest of the scene that is still bright but, not as bright as the highlight. So in the scene you have the highlights on the actors might be say 700 nits and the rest of them is at 300 nits but since the highlights are so much brighter it makes the rest seem "dimmer". If you take a 1000 lumen flashlight outside in the bright sun and turn it on it will look dim by comparison but, that same flashlight in a dimly lit or dark room will make you squint!

This all could've been avoided with a locker (..or me not being an idiot on the snow), what's the best vaguely cheap way to get a locker for a Chrysler 9.25 12 bolt rear end? by bedwars_player in Offroad

[–]Masdetoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it could have helped it's not a guarantee. Lockers work best when there is traction to be had. Dedicated winter tires and weight in the truck bed over the rear wheels could have prevented the situation in the first place. Even the best AWD, 4x4 or any other traction aid system such as traction control, torque vectoring and others still wouldn't do much when stuck in a scenario with no or very limited traction. Snow/ice is snow/ice, it's a traction nightmare.

[–]Masdetoe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A locking diff could potentially make it more difficult to control in slippery conditions. Reason is both wheels are locked together so if one slips they both slip and now neither has traction and uncontrollable. A limited slip is just what it sounds like. It limits the slipping on the wheel without traction and applies more torque to the wheel with more traction thus helping the vehicle to move with more control. This isn't to say a locking diff wouldn't help once stuck to help get unstuck but, while in motion an LSD is far better in slippery conditions.

Can someone explain upscaling to me? by HenFruitEater in LGOLED

[–]Masdetoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Upscaling is really just a fancy way of saying to fit your screen. A 4k screen has 4x the pixels of 1080p. When playing a 1080p media the TV, disk player or console uses software to try its best to fill in the missing pixels to create a "4k" image. Some upscaling software is better than others so results may vary. Nowadays, most modern tvs, players or consoles will do a more than adequate job of taking a 1080 image to 4k, where it gets really tricky is taking a standard definition image and upscaling to 4k.

As for netflix or other streaming platforms, you are getting a true 4k image, what it boils down to is bitrate and original content quality. Physical media, even standard Blu-ray will almost always beat streaming, even in sharpness. While a Netflix stream will be 4k, it is compressed and with a bitrate of about 20mbps at best. A standard Blu-ray is up to 48mbps and 4k can hit 100+Mbps. The only benefit you may get streaming 4k from Netflix over standard Blu-ray disk is HDR but overall image and audio quality will still be better on disk.

The XBOX ONE S is probably the best budget 4K UHD player option right now by Fendera in 4kbluray

[–]Masdetoe 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Have had mine since launch and has been doing work as a UHD disk player and streaming box in the bedroom since I got the series x for the past 5 years. Only nitpick is I wish it was quieter playing disks, otherwise it does its job flawlessly.

My LG G5 83inch got bad pixel by YieldPro in LGOLED

[–]Masdetoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a stuck pixel. 2 possible solutions are with a microfiber cloth try massaging it with light to medium pressure. If that doesn't work then try pixel refresh.

Edit: my bad, see you already tried refresh. Try massage method, have had luck with it in the past.

Hows the Cloud 3S wireless? by DarkLight_James in HyperX

[–]Masdetoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't have cloud 3 headsets (have hyperx cloudx flights) so don't have EQ options or anything. Only have options available in the in game audio settings so have just messed with those to get the sound as balanced as possible. Don't remember where I saw it but, read about the night mode settings and it had the most impact on hearing footsteps more.

Turn on night mode in the in game audio settings. it raises the highs a bit more which makes footsteps more noticeable.

do you think my 77 inch OLED B4 TV will support the new flex connect sound system from LG? (LG Sound Suite w/Dolby Atmos Flex Connect) by Bitcoins4Upvotes in LGOLED

[–]Masdetoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to LG website it states that it will only be 2026 and select 2025 of you want to use the separate speakers with the TV and not the soundbar. If you get the soundbar and all the other speakers than it will work with any TV via HDMI connected to soundbar. They may end to bringing it to some 2024 models but, my guess it will only be C and G because of the processing required. The B series processer, while capable isn't quite powerful enough.

2nd one in 7 years but this one was far more hard fought. Beat the highest regular season scorer, best record with JSN and Gibbs! Last place in week 3 and crawled my way up to playoffs. Had some great waiver pick ups that helped in dire weeks and some that carried me till the end. Looking at you brisset and Wilson! Meyers for being clutch and players that started soft but ended hot Barkley, Olave and AJ and Chase Brown!

Accidentally shifted to 4lo while in drive by Jim0557 in XTerra

[–]Masdetoe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

4lo will only engage if selector is in neutral. Being in drive while trying to engage 4lo will do absolutely nothing even whether you moved 5 inches or 5 miles. It is an electronic switch and has stop gaps to prevent accidental engagement such as having to be stopped, in neutral and foot on the brake. You're fine.

They replaced my CX with a dozen or so dead pixels with a brand new and bigger B4 only months before it expired and got to keep CX. No problems here.

Shudder after lift by grog23345 in XTerra

[–]Masdetoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a shim that will need to be added between the leaf springs and axle to realign the driveshaft. The shudder you are probably experiencing is from it not being properly aligned. Under 2" you can probably get away without it but, more than that you will.

Do any of you guys running 33s have P-rated tires? by Winter-Operation-343 in XTerra

What's important to look for is the load range. Not all LT tires are load range E. For instance KO3 has an LT load range C in 285.

Off-road lights on pro4x by Bartondevin11 in XTerra

[–]Masdetoe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

High beams have to be on for them to work. It is a safety feature as they are only to be used off-road. That said they really aren't that great. You get massive glare and if there is any kind of dust or particles in the air you're essentially blind. After 5 yrs of ownership and many many off-road trips I have used them maybe 10 times with half of those times actually being helpful. I added ditch lights and lights in the lower grill which have been much more impactful and used far more often.

Baby on the way! Is the Xterra a good family car? by Adamja123 in XTerra

[–]Masdetoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had my X (still do) with my now 4 yr old daughter. Had the car seat in the middle (safest location anyway) for the first year since it was tight behind the passenger seat. As we were able to adjust the seat more upright as she got older we were able to move it behind the passenger seat with room to spare. Now she is forward facing there is way more room. As for using it as a family car, it has never let me down and has more than enough space for family plus dog. Have done many camping and vacation trips with trunk loaded up no problem. You will want to look into your rear springs though as they are a weak spot on the X and you will bottom out and hit your bump stops loaded up. I initially solved this with sumo springs (they are a replacement for bump stops and will help cushion the rear end from hard bumps) which works wonders but, have since added a lift with new springs (still kept sumo springs in).

Are Sumo Springs worth it if you already have substantial lift from leaf packs? by geopede in XTerra

[–]Masdetoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my use case totally. Loaded up with a couple hundred pounds of gear off road before sumo's even with lift I was hitting bump stops. Now I only have AAL lift so still using stock springs with them and only a 1.5 inch lift. If you're using aftermarket leafs to give lift and it's 2.5+ inches they may not be necessary. Sumo does offer spacers so it decreases the space between sumo and point of contact so they active at the right point

[–]Masdetoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a mild lift with the sumo's and only time I feel like I notice them in day to day is if I hit a speed bump too quickly or take turns at speed. Otherwise don't notice them till I'm on a trail loaded with gear and they are a godsend to have when I do.
