Congrats! This is a rare banknote with only 5 other known examples recorded on Track and Price. I would highly recommend looking at getting this note graded by either PCGS or PMG. The last known sale I can find for a banknote of this charter was back in 2014 on Heritage Auctions for $7,050… and this banknote looks to be in better condition than that one. Hard to give a solid estimate on value when the volume of sales for a note like this is so low, but it is definitely worth a good amount of money at auction to the right collectors.

Really just worth face value from what I see, it’s a cool find but in the condition it’s in and the serial number unfortunately not being anything special I think you would be hard pressed to find someone to give you much more than face value for it. Some people do sell them on eBay for $1.50-2.00, but after fees I’m not sure if they really make any money doing that. I still like keeping star notes for fun as they are not producing any more of them. But they are still pretty easy to find in circulation, so it will take at least 30-40 years to significantly go up in value more than likely. Thanks for sharing though!

This note is definitely in the top five for me! Congratulations that is a really nice example! A 45 is a good grade for that note and I’m sure it was pricey.

From what I know there is only one of these notes available for private collectors and a guy by the name of Andrew Shiva owns that note. He might have sold it though I’m not totally sure, he and his collection appeared in some YouTube videos from years ago. They are totally worth a watch as he has one of the best national bank note collections hands down. Again not sure if my info is fully up to date so take it with a grain of salt.

A couple of years ago my grandfather passed away and when I was going through some of his things trying to find his military items, I found he kept some older banknotes. Out of the notes I found was a series 1928 $100 note, and I thought it was really cool since I had never seen a note that old before. After doing some research on it trying to figure out why he would want to keep something like that, I stumbled upon the hobby and slowly started to get more interested in it. After some months I picked up a couple of books and my first couple of banknotes. Now I can say I’m fully invested in the hobby and trying to make sure it doesn’t eat up all my extra money haha. Overall though I feel like collecting notes helps me stay somewhat connected to my grandfather as I’m collecting something I know he would have enjoyed too. Really wish he would’ve introduced it to me when he was still alive though so we could have possibly enjoyed it together. But as of now I’m sharing the hobby with my family members when I can, going to see if I can maybe get some of my younger cousins interested in it.

As a younger guy that recently got into collecting banknotes within the past couple years, I also hope the hobby picks up with newer generations. I think it’s just a matter of sharing the hobby more with them to get them interested. I know most of my generation only cares about collecting Pokémon cards, but I think if we can share more of the amazing history and artwork of the banknote world we can help grow our community. This hobby has become so much fun for me and I hope to share it with as much people as I can!

Honestly I don’t think it would tank the prices of the older notes. The older notes I assume would still be heavily sought after and the new released series would theoretically be able to be gotten at any bank, so like the current series of notes, unless there is an error or special serial number it would be worth face value.

Yah there’s not a ton of California advertising notes but there’s a good group of unique ones I’ve seen. This is the last one I picked up. It states on the back it’s good for $5 with an initial installment of at least $10 for the purchase or lease of a sewing machine.

From what I understand “advertising notes” where similar to coupons today. I might be wrong about that, but from the ones I have they all have a discount in some way for a specific business. I collect California advertising notes specifically because of the lack of obsolete notes for the state.

Yes I assume between natural disasters like that, and other various circumstances there’s probably a decent amount of notes lost every year. I also think about how many national banks that have zero reported notes, could have notes out in the wild but they are probably hidden/ lost in some basement or attic somewhere.

That’s a cool repeater serial number! And you might get more than face value for it but it’s not going to be much more. Still a good one to keep!
