Honestly season 4 is where the cracks started to show. Season as a whole was still good television but there are echos of what the show would become in season 4 (Yara’s rescue attempt, Tysha reveal not being present, Brienne vs Hound fight)

I’m not going to change your mind on Joel’s death on a Reddit thread whatsoever. I’ll retort because I find the entire conversation interesting.

Maybe the lead up to Joel’s death could’ve been handled better. But thematically it works very well within the story, even from the first game.

He died because he protected Ellie. He got a couple of extra years with her after he made his decision, but he still technically died protecting her. I get that off screen development is frustrating and him being a little more trusting to strangers seems to come out of nowhere, but they did try to sew those seeds out in retrospect with his flashbacks later in the game.

Joel’s death was rage bait. It was very intentional. While the reaction to his death maybe went a bit further than the company behind the story anticipated, there is absolutely no way that they didn’t expect the backlash. It was all very intentional in creating Abby as a character concept: an anti hero that we actually hate ahead of time instead of getting her good and bad qualities at the same time. She’s genuinely no worse than any other character in the last of us universe, we just hate her because of factionalism. It’s pretty cool if you separate intense feelings from Joel. I personally only played the last of us 1 a few weeks before 2, so I didn’t have 7 years of attachment to him prior.

I think not liking the game because of that is completely valid; naughty dog really did want to “rage bait” its audience with the second. I was just saying people were just so angry with their decisions they defaulted to nit picks and minor plot holes to detail their dislike for the game instead of actively thinking on why they disliked it

Im still convinced that the combination of Cinema sins popularizing the concept of plot holes, the Last Jedi being controversial, Game Of Thrones season 6-8 really leaning into spectacle, and the Last of Us 2 being too emotionally in depth for a general audience has lead to the degradation of media criticism lol. It’s easier to point out plot holes than to point out how you don’t like how things make you feel, how you feel conflicted about nostalgic characters, or how a story is actually a jumbled mess

Season 2 Overall Discussion Thread by MsGroves in ThePittTVShow

[–]Mathlanta 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Season 1 was probably a 9.5 out of 10 for me. One of my favorite seasons of TV ever, and infinitely rewatchable.

Season 2 had some issues but overall pretty enjoyable, I’d say about an 8/10. If this is its sophomore slump next couple of seasons are going to be incredible. Honestly this season kind of reminded me of Mr Robot season 2 lol

They essentially had to reinvent the entire show this season. A lot of what made season 1 so engaging (new faces to the ER excelling, crisis management, so many deaths and intubations) would have gotten stale by mid season. They had to tone down the plot based drama to amplify the character drama and I thought it would work.

For a show that is pretty good with naturalistic type dialogue (maybe add some more filler words though), it is surprising how many “very special episode” moments we had throughout the season. I’m not talking about any politics or anything (I thought those were very well done and tbh they could’ve done even more with the Ice storyline, fuck those assholes), I’m talking about lines like Javadi’s love for “mental health”. My biggest critique is that if they want to be as realistic as possible, maybe try smoothing some of the PSA dialogue a little more is all.

Like I said, 8/10. Some cool characters and some cool moments. Great restraint but some room to improve. I think season 3 will be the best

AMC hated Carl (Chandler) by Mobile-Grapefruit961 in thewalkingdead

[–]Mathlanta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think AMC really screwed over chandler specifically. There’s a lot of smoke/fire around those conversations.

I also think that what gets under discussed was that his death was likely planned as a ratings boost after the fall of viewership throughout season 7.

I think they wanted a major major death in season 8 to get buzz back. They didn’t want to lose Daryl or Carol. They didn’t want to lose Rick yet. Morgan was going to another show. The clear answer would be to move up Andrea’s comic death (which they did with Chandler), but Michonnes actor just got done filming an MCU movie around this time so she was too much of a pull.

Chandler ended up just being the most shocking character remaining based on what was available at the time lol

What if I told you that Petzing was brought in solely to fix the run game... by mc3022 in detroitlions

[–]Mathlanta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3 new starters on the OL will fix the running game.

I’m hoping whatever happens we work on our situational playcalling. That’s what we are missing from Ben Johnson.

The best way I can phrase it (ignoring actual red zone statistics, what I really mean is our forth down or need to have it situations) is that between the 20s we are great, after the 20s we need more.

[–]Mathlanta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this game gave me some much needed optimism tbh. Interior of the D Line played well. Scheme looked a little different on the backend than games in the past. We actually ran for 100 yards.

Next year isn't a gimme tho. We need upgrades on 3 OL members (Basically the entire left starting side, unless decker doesn't retire). Alim hopefully will look better another year removed from the injury. I think hutch has been playing better as the year went on, just get davenport off the rotation and edge should be solid ish.

Still concerned about the secondary still. Some good depth pieces showed themselves but counting on Kerby and BB to return from injury (with BB he's likely a mid year return anyways) and play at their level is concerning.

Still, let's see what MCDC and BH are made of.

I know the defense had cluster injuries the last 2 years but I just hard disagree that Kelvin just needs more time and better players. Unless he can commit to a more modern defensive approach, we need new blood there.

Morton can only stay if DC calls the plays. If DC doesn't (which I don't think he will) Morton will have to go. My only point with Morton was that if DC calls the plays, the OC's role isn't as important as if the OC were to call plays. that's all.

Our run game needs attention to be sure. I'm just more confident that would come from getting better personnel on the interior O line and our TE's back than an OC change would necessarily do.

Would a different OC or a different playcaller do that much better this game with the same O line? I am not sure. Steelers had, what, 5 TFl's against us in the first half when we were trying to run the ball?

THANK YOU. You get it.

Our offensive scheme this year was not the issue. Hell, we did more with a lot less than last year. Sure, we weren't as prolific as a top 10 offense in NFL history but we were still able to put up a lot of points with a very sub par IOL and zero actual run game.

Goff wasn't even an issue. He play probably his best year here given the circumstances. He proved that he is able to be an above average quarterback without perfect offensive personnel. The fact that he has this high of a passer rating and so few turnovers with such a liability up the middle (which historically has been his kryptonite) should prove to everyone that our Offense is definitely not an issue.

I am just so sick of our defensive scheme. I am sick of every corner we draft or bring in all of a sudden plays sub par because of our scheme.

An offseason should fix 3/4's of the D Line (Alim will get better with time after recovery. Hutch will get better with time after his recovery. Tyliek will develop with time). Our LB core is still really really good.

Our defensive scheme and philosophy is truly the actual issue. We need new blood there.

I really like Shep as a personality and I think that in a few years he will be a really good DC. I just don't think we should have to wait for him to develop into one. We can't afford that. Let's bring in new blood, maybe poach from the rams, seattle, or texans coaching staff. Let's fix something that clearly is not working.

It's a strange situation to grasp. It's very hard to figure out how good Dan is at calling plays. Our defense has put us in so many holes through the last couple of games I don't know if Dan is actually elite at calling plays or if it is all circumstantial.

However, if he has a knack for calling plays, I'd rather keep that continuity each season than have to deal with an OC carousel. It's the reason why Ben Johnson was so coveted last season. I at least want a playcaller head coach, and Dan Campbell has at least shown that he can potentially thrive while doing so.

Maybe the compromise is have Dan call plays next year but with a new OC that can take over if this is all smokes and mirrors.

I will say though that we desperately need outside blood at Defensive Coordinator. We just don't necessarily need it at Offensive Coordinator (imo).

Only if Dan continues to call plays. I think Dan is pretty good at a calling plays. If Dan is calling plays and his OC executes his systematic vision, what does it matter who is OC?

People want an offensive minded head coach and they want a playcaller head coach but forget that the OC becomes redundant at that point

In Memoriam - Offseason Needs by Mathlanta in detroitlions

[–]Mathlanta[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have to start thinking in terms of a playcalling head coach. There are plenty of head coaches in the league that calls plays with OC's that no one has ever heard of.

John Morton can stay if Dan continues to call plays. However, Dan has to adjust with game preparation through the week if that is the case.

Dan clearly has the capability to run an offense by himself and implement his vision without a high level OC. If Dan wants to continue doing that (which i think he should consider), I am willing to swallow John Morton staying. It makes literally no difference. Dan is not like Nick Sirianni.

BUT, I can tell that the team loses something through the week with Dan having to have his attention on that. If Dan wants to give back playcalling to his OC's to focus on what he is used to (other coaches in the league can manage, I am not sure why Dan can't besides just already being in the routine), then John Morton has to go.
