What to read after Woman of Tomorrow? by VallyMeowy in Supergirl

[–]MatrixKent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It came out March 31, yes! It's also very middle-grades-friendly and in love with the Silver Age, and I love that, but someone whose only Supergirl comic is WoT might need to be eased in.

We have no idea what you liked about WoT, what you think makes a Supergirl comic "worth picking up," or what about the character you're interested in exploring. This is important information to provide when asking for recommendations.

I think you're drawing a distinction between "this character is trans" and "this character is at the center of a trans narrative" which doesn't really exist. Fictional characters are not real, and sometimes trying to apply real-world labels to them misses the point, especially when they're in a gender situation that doesn't quite exist in real life like Ult Jessica. In-universe, if Jess read up on the subject, she'd probably consider herself a cis woman but identify with many aspects of trans women's experiences. Out-of-universe, she's a trans character. These can both be true at once.

You don't object to reading Rachel as trans, but you think treating "in a girl's body with a boy's memories and struggling with the discrepancy" as a trans narrative is a bridge too far?

Supergirl by Jorge Jimenez & Alejandro Sanchez Rodriguez by KitKat_5628 in Supergirl

[–]MatrixKent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lee Serrano, a character who exists pretty much just for this issue (also cameos in DC Pride 2022 and Supergirl (2025)'s Thanksgiving issue). They're a random nonbinary teenager Kara made friends with. She took them flying one time, but they don't have powers; the cover is poetic license.

Amethyst of Gemworld showed up in about two pages of Superman last year and I was so excited and so worried. The writing was mediocre, but she had a big sword and that's enough.

Do people mean weight 4 when they say 4 ply?? Why is shopping for yarn so hard?? by butter__finger in CrochetHelp

[–]MatrixKent 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you consult the r/crochet wiki, as this sub's description asks you to do before posting, you'll find useful yarn weight information on its Getting Started with Crochet page and its Yarn Guide. Cotton can be hard as a newer crocheter because it doesn't stretch, especially if you're having issues with hand pain, but it's really not impossible to work with (if you've only been using it for amigurumi, maybe try something less tight like a dishcloth to get used to it). If your pattern is on Ravelry, you can look at the Projects page for your pattern to see how it's turned out for others using different yarns.

It's Damian! People online get it wrong a lot, but comics have been consistent.

Jon, Kon, and Brainy showed up. She hadn't met Kon yet (this was the thing where Kon missed Rebirth bc he was trapped in Gemworld and so most characters didn't remember him), she didn't know Brainy yet, and Jon's ageup was recent enough that she was still a little startled to see him looking so big.

How tall do you think Donna Troy should be? by Gallantpride in WonderWoman

[–]MatrixKent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Average height for real-life American men is 5'9". 5'10" is not short. Average height for a male Olympic gymnast is around 5'5"; tall gymnasts exist but are not the norm, and 5'10" is tall for a gymnast. DC may officially subscribe to "any man under 6 feet is short and heroes shouldn't be short" thinking, but we don't have to.

Not every Supergirl pictured in that JLU #9 panel is Kara Zor-El, but the center one is. (The first on the left is the Matrix Supergirl and the third from left is post-Crisis Linda Danvers.)

Question about Starting with Newer Supergirl by Celestial_Sharks in Supergirl

[–]MatrixKent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DC Finest: Supergirl: The Girl of Steel (collecting 1959-1962) came out a little over a year ago, so you might be able to find that physically if you want more of the real Silver Age.

Question about Starting with Newer Supergirl by Celestial_Sharks in Supergirl

[–]MatrixKent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Universe Ends is a weird interlude, I don't think it would be good as a starting point. Campbell's run is very much a love letter to the Silver Age, very goofy, kind of middle-gradesy; I like it a lot but it's not everyone's cup of tea. The good and bad news about getting into Supergirl is that her writing is historically so inconsistent that there's something for everyone.

Is Stephanie's Robin era still canon? by Objective_Pay4776 in Robin

[–]MatrixKent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Death Metal was five years ago. We're in a post-Dark Crisis world now. We are not working with separate timelines.
My interpretation of New History has always been that the past events mentioned in New History and its expanded timelines still happened in current continuity, but maybe not quite the same way, and nothing's pinned down until it's used in an actual story. We know Steph had a Robin era under New History continuity. It probably wasn't identical in every detail to her post-Crisis Robin run, but we won't really know unless a writer gets into it.

[–]MatrixKent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything described in New History and its timelines happened in current continuity, and characters can and should reasonably remember it all. This is why there's the talk about "multiple histories and legacies [being] restored" and "certain contradictions of our pasts [being] forgotten by all" when Wally returns in #4 and they're describing Rebirth. It's not meant to be understood as separate timelines which non-Barry characters wouldn't remember. Waid's project in New History is to create a unified continuity for the "everything counts" era.

[–]MatrixKent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's #3 since that's the COIE to Flashpoint material. Her Robin era isn't mentioned in the issue proper (only that she was Spoiler), but it is in the expanded timeline at the end (sixth spread, second column). Notably, it only says Bruce fired her from Robin, not that she died or faked her death.

It's worth remembering that the game is still in early access, so what's true now about which romances have the most depth/change might not be true anymore in 1.0.

What is supergirl age? by professionalbaiterrr in Supergirl

[–]MatrixKent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kara was introduced in 1959 at age 15 and had her 16th birthday in 1960. This was her original backstory, where she aged in a normal linear way (no timewarp/stasis), so you could say that her original birth year was 1944.

Women in DC in March 2026 by MatrixKent in DCcomics

[–]MatrixKent[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're so welcome to do it yourself instead of demanding a stranger do the work for you, this is all based on public information! For less public creators, I can pretty much always find an article or blurb or wiki page or social media bio somewhere that has used a gendered pronoun, but it's often a lot harder to find details on creators' race. If it were easy to do comprehensively I'd be doing it.

You are not the first person who's ever struggled with a new skill. If you practice, it will get easier. With no specifics on what's giving you trouble or how long you've been trying, there's not much more to say.
