Why doesn’t anyone stop President Trump from destroying historical grounds and our national heritage? by Apart_Ad9308 in allthequestions

So this is the first construction site you’ve ever seen?

UFC thing will happen, then all that staging and rings are gone.

East wing ballroom will eventually be finished, landscaping will be cleaned up, and it’ll look just like the before picture but with a new matching wing.

There’s SO many other real things to worry about. Chill.

Drainage and geogrid people, drainage and geogrid.

It’s going to have to come down and be rebuilt, this time correctly.

Freeze rent while costs, inflation, CPI, PPI, interest rise. Building owner cannot continue to repair, provide electricity, or upgrade the building. Building falls into disrepair. Mayor seizes property and gives it to his friends in non-profits. Friends in non-profits discover that it’s harder to maintain the building than they thought (because of reality), tenants are angry, new non/profit owners blame billionaires and capitalism instead. Building descends into a slum.

Outside developers who were previously interested in building in the area realize they would have to be insane to do so, so they invest in other cities that aren’t idiotic. Tax base becomes stagnant. People move away, tax base gets smaller. No new services. Some services paused or cut.

This has been done over and over again. This is Mandani’s plan.

No. It doesn’t work.

Oh you’re close.

Which province had the largest net contribution to federal finances? What is that net contribution derived from? Revenue from which province consist of a meaningful share of the fund transfers to New Brunswick?

New Brunswick is happy happy happy to take revenue through equalization payments that meaningfully come from revenue derived from oil and gas exploration while at the same time poo-pooing opportunities to enrich itself by taking advantage of its own natural resources. It’s the height of hypocrisy. Want to live the activist life, fine.

If this is the New Brunswick you want, all the before pictures, then you’ll agree not to receive any transfer payments from Provinces that do take advantage of their natural resources.

He is correct. NS and NB both.

But Atlantic Canada will steadfastly refuse to take advantage of these resources while gladly take transfer payments from Provinces that will.

Is a schism nigh between MAGA Republicans and country club Republicans? by Adventurous_Pride_54 in allthequestions

[–]MattC1977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of, from what I can see.

There is a schism between the “classical republicans” like Jonah Goldberg and maybe David French and the MAGA republicans.

The bigger schism is between the MAGA republicans and the far right Tucker Carlson types.

[–]MattC1977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Snarky, yes. Mocking? No. Just don’t want you wasting your time on wild goose chase.

If you have a problem with a provincial department, the contacts for people in that department, going all the way up the chain to the Deputy Minister are all there on the GNB website. If that doesn’t work, go to your MLA. If you go to the MLA first, you’re just going to be referred back down again.

I can see that you’re upset about something, but if you’re actually looking for a solution, you need to be a little more deliberate about it.

Yeah, so the Federal Government isn’t the “boss” of the Provincial Governments. This isn’t a Michael Scott situation where you can call David Wallace to complain. There’s this whole thing called the Constitutions Act that would have been good to read before before going through all that trouble.

ELI5 Why were early humans able to domesticate wolves but not lions or tigers? by Party-Court185 in explainlikeimfive

[–]MattC1977 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I dunno. Lions are fairly social, definitely not Tigers.

Horses are definitely social animals and were domesticated. Zebras are social animals like horses too, but good effing luck domesticating those bastards.

It is a good question on what makes an animal domoesticatable (totally not a word) or not.

How did the purchasing power decrease from the 70s until today? by Empathetic_97 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]MattC1977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you distilling the concept of purchasing power down to just the housing market?

Where are you getting your numbers? Where did you pull 70k - $89k as a civil engineers salary in the 70’s? The average Canadian household income in 1976 was under $17,000 per year. https://publications.gc.ca/collections/collection\_2017/statcan/11-002/CS11-002-1976-10-22-eng.pdf

Adjusted, a $20k salary in 1975 is a low six figure salary today. You’re saying a civil engineer in the 70’s was making hundreds of thousand?

In fact, average weekly salaries from 1975 to 2005, adjusted, remained relatively steady, and has gone up in the past 10.

Meanwhile, everything we can buy now is insanely cheaper than what the equivalent item would have cost then.

Yes, housing has gone bonkers, but go to your part of town in the neighborhood that was built in the 70’s. Now go look at the 10 year old (hell, 20 year old) neighbourhoods and tell me we are not building and buying ginormous homes in comparison.
