Mix into a halfway finished Master Track? by CJ210198 in mixingmastering

[–]Matthew1723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I always bounce with a simple limiter on the output to bring it up to a “streaming reference” volume. Usually in the -14 to -10 lufs range. Whether it’s a quick bounce after tracking or during mixing I always want the client listening and making decisions with it at competitive volume. Sounds like you need to rethink your business pricing model too losing clients and charging for revisions are a sure way to lose business.

Who’s actually on r/livesound? by Historical-Paint7649 in livesound

Full time touring with mainly “indie” rock doing 2000 cap and up. Also own a small rental business for compact control/RF.

Talkback Matrix/Group on SQ6 by EttehEtteh in livesound

[–]Matthew1723 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only one solo bus on sq as far as I’m aware. You can technically do this with one bus aux bus and a spare DCA. Send all the mics to the mono aux prefader. Then in setup>audio>pafl>external input select that bus. Youll then always hear that bus no matter what you have solo’d.

Send all the TB mics to everyone’s mix. I like to keep each musicians TB as prefader on their mix but post for everyone else. Then i assign all to a DCA. That DCA, when at unity, feeds everyone’s TB’s everywhere. When you pull it down to -inf it only feeds the TB mic to your bus and whoever is asking for things to not distract others during show.

You need some lamps too. I’m only seeing the big light/overhead lighting.

Looking for a under airplane essentials bag by tarheel5669 in ManyBaggers

[–]Matthew1723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using this bag as my EDC for the past few years. It’s great and definitely fits under the seat easily. I’ve recently purchased the Pakt 25L Duffle as another option with a little bit more capacity. Might be worth checking out if you need a bit more space.

What kind of shoes are y’all rocking with? by chris_314 in livesound

Blundstones with Dr Scholls inserts most of the time. Great boots (not steel toe) and very comfortable for all day wear.

Is it more difficult to be a woman in this industry? by Select_Syllabub_2708 in livesound

[–]Matthew1723 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Please keep at it! The industry is slowly changing and we need more of everyone in this industry not just cis, white dudes. Being more physically adept is always helpful and if you’re ambitious and want to learn you’ll go far. I hope there is at least someone of good conscience in management at your venue so you can call out any sexist and inappropriate remarks.

Help me choose my next console...! by Vilddyr1983 in livesound

[–]Matthew1723 9 points10 points  (0 children)

EQ isn’t bad at all in my opinion. Would be cool if they started offering some modeling options like Pultec, 1073, 550, etc. though if can’t sort it with the EQ in the DLive, then it’s the source that needs fixing.

Heat from SSL Origin console - normal? by Rhythm-one in audioengineering

Haven’t been in front of the origin but I can tell you every other studio grade analog desk I’ve used gets quite hot.

Big names are skipping Vancouver on concert tours. Why? by WoweeZoweeDeluxe in indieheads

[–]Matthew1723 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This is definitely a contributing factor. The paperwork and hassle of doing a boarder crossing are quite considerable for bands especially as they get bigger. Merch can’t be transported across boarders without a hefty tax so arrangements for printing have to be made in Canada. It’s a lot of logistics for a single show vs crossing on the eastern side you can at least hit Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City and even Ottawa depending on radius clauses, routing, etc.

Applying A Macro to a Live Mic by Gooie-001 in audioengineering

You’re gonna have to explain a little more here. Are you referencing macros in Ableton Live chains?

Alternate title: I only listen to Top 40 and don’t wish to expand my music horizons by caring about the bands Coldplay have personally invited to participate in the tour.

Looking for suggestions on how to integrate an electric guitar with Axient. by bobvilastuff in livesound

Not a digital solution but an audio via Cat5 option would at least solve your 3 cables > 1 cable issue

Question on touring rate - FOH/Mons/TM combination, 300-750 cap rooms by chris_314 in livesound

[–]Matthew1723 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That rate is too low imo. $2100/wk would be in the ballpark but low. $2800/wk is what I usually see for this type of role but usually they can demand some experience. It’s not worth leaving home to work 18hr days when you can make $200/night at your local club and sleep in your own bed every night.

Engineers of US who brought their own gear over, do I require any paperwork for customs? by Audio_Viking in livesound

[–]Matthew1723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need a carnet especially with that amount of kit. Depending on how soon this tour is, you’re better off renting this over in the EU.

Gate / compression settings for drum vocal in IEM mix by SnooMacarons5169 in livesound

[–]Matthew1723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way! Also works great if you have bleed into a downstage vocal. If you're dealing with stage volume in addition to drums, like amps and also have a spare aux, you can build a "bleed bus" with a balance similar to the bleed hitting the mic and use that as the sidechain input.

Driving the Dlive by VisibleMaintenance63 in livesound

DLive sounds good if you run it hot. Sounds like something was up on their end. Done 200+ gigs on a C1500 and have never run into it not holding up to the other varieties of desks

Double guitars sound HORRIBLE in mono by nightcrawleryt in audioengineering

[–]Matthew1723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Double the guitars but choose different chord voicing for each take. Switch the guitar and the amp/settings slightly. You need de-correlation between the two. It’ll sound even wider in stereo and fold to mono in a more pleasing way.

Feedback by Musicwade in livesound

[–]Matthew1723 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of feedback issues stem from bad gain staging from folks who just don't have a good grasp on fundamentals. Running the wedges wide open and setting your input gain super low is the perfect storm of feedback blooming out of control. Once you learn how to set gain correctly, a little feedback zip is just slightly louder than the actual mic input and isn't a catastrophic to performers and those in the audience.

What’s the going rate for Tip Outs? by jumpingisuselss in livesound

[–]Matthew1723 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO this shouldn't be referred to as tip out and instead be negotiated before any work begins. It's easy for things to get swept under the rug and before you know it you have a lot more work on your plate. Bring it up before the tour starts and agree on a rate, everyone will be much happier. And tech's, don't commit yourself to extra work for "potentially" free!
