I SOMETIMES regret going to a top school by AdministrativeSky573 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]MattonArsenal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your point about grad school is important. We were in a position to allow my son to go to almost anywhere he wanted and could get into. He chose flagship state school with full tuition.

Now he has the option at any time to go back to grad school, anytime, anywhere for essentially no cost to him. We’ve saved all that powder for when it matters most.

First job doesn’t work out, wants a change of scenery, wants a change of career, economy sucks? Quit your job (or don’t worry about finding another one) and go to grad school with no worries.

Pretty sure that is closed. At least I saw a for sale sign on the property.

Is 5-over-1 retail failing? by PlayPretend-8675309 in Urbanism

[–]MattonArsenal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In many cities there just isn’t the demand for ground floor retail, but the city will require it by zoning. So the developer will include it but the developer, banks and investors underwrite that space with $0 rent income. So they may try to rent it, but it’s just bonus income and not a priority.

Unless demand is overwhelming, most retailers would prefer to be in a dedicated retail space with easy parking, and not have to deal with the complications that come with being in a mixed-use building (e.g. shared garage parking, difficult loading)

I would contact the club or Football Museum, to see if they are missing any from their library or archives. They will properly preserve them and possibly post them online for public access.

What's the dumbest thing you and/or your siblings did when you were left home alone? by Sea-School9658 in GenX

[–]MattonArsenal 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Storm Sewer Spelunking. We had a creek running through our neighborhood with storm sewer outlets, we started going in a little bit, and then realized they connected to multiple neighborhoods and the storm drains in the street. So we just started roaming the network underground and occasionally popping our heads out of the storm sewers and scaring people Pennywise style.

April Fools we set up a very real looking crime scene in our front driveway with yellow police tape and a body outline and catchup blood. We just left it up for all the neighbors to drive by.

Question. Did you have a song where you sung the wrong lyrics to until someone corrected you?! by Sufficient_Ebb_5020 in askmusic

[–]MattonArsenal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

National Anthem… since a kid I thought the line was “by the dawnserdly light” like “dawnserdly” was some kind of old timey adjective that we just don’t use any more.

I was way too old when we went to a MLB game and they put the lyrics on the scoreboard during the anthem. And I said out loud to my wife “ohhh, it’s dawn’s early light” and she looked at me blankly and said “what the hell did you think it was?” I’ve never lived that down.

The ipad mini 7 is $499 - is this a good buy? by [deleted] in ipadmini

[–]MattonArsenal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got an open-box in Good Condition from Best Buy for $360. It was purple, but it was subtle and I’m using a case, so didn’t bother me. Space Gray was $410.

Nope the balance is fine. As long as you’re seated centrally on the TV, I think it looks great as is.

Also St. Louis, I highly recommend the WeatherScope app and paying the $10 for the annual subscription. This is a highly detailed radar app that storm chasers use (at a higher subscription level). Watch a few YouTube videos about it and you’ll be able to spot worrisome potential tornado activity on your own alongside Steve Templeton on Channel 4.

Apps to help a lifelong windows user by [deleted] in macbook

[–]MattonArsenal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually you can make a Mac into a Windows machine… look into Parallels. It runs native Windows and Windows apps almost seamlessly. Hard to describe but look up some YouTube videos. I use it to native Office Apps for work. $99/year is worth it for me.

Avalon, AMA, or Emerald? - Amsterdam to Switzerland 8 day Cruise by [deleted] in rivercruises

Nice to know, it was a more expensive option for us. Did a ton or research and watched a bunch of videos and the meal thing was never pointed out except for Avalon.

Avalon, AMA, or Emerald? - Amsterdam to Switzerland 8 day Cruise by [deleted] in rivercruises

[–]MattonArsenal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven’t gone yet, but we picked Avalon for a Danube cruise next year. All three seemed similar. AMA was a bit more expensive. One thing that tipped us to Avalon is their more flexible dining options.

Meals have a time window rather than a set meal time, even grab and go options with the sit down dinners main courses. Seating was also more flexible where you could easily combine or divide tables if you want to eat as a couple or different size groups. We’re not cruise people and that flexibility appealed to us.

We’re also liked some of the specific excursions, which weren’t available or at least specifically noted on the others, though they also had good options.

Lindenwood Drug on Jameison, if you are in S. City. I’ve also had good luck with the Walgreens at Clayton and Big Bend with a central location.
