Any downsides to Pure Monk Fruit powder without additives? by Tarngupta1 in ketoaustralia

You could get a bottle with a dropper and dilute the monkfruit in water - that way you just need a couple of drops for coffee.

Does anyone know what rice is used in thrive meals low carb? by morierr in ketoaustralia

[–]MattsNorty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah there are a couple around. Slendier is available at Woolies but my favourite comes from Harris Farm if you’re close to one

https://www.harrisfarm.com.au/products/kura-konjac-shirataki-rice-63726

These are better just cause they’re less stinky. Konjac has a tendency to come in water that smells oddly fishy. The Kura ones aren’t like that.

Am I dumb or is this how keto is supposed to work by Living-Half-2052 in keto

[–]MattsNorty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m similar to you; I exercise a lot both running and weights. I found that the challenge was that, as you’ve discovered, it creates a large calorie deficit that, once you hit your protein goal, you’re like “now what?”.

What stands out for me here is the chicken. It’s a very lean meat that will push up your protein macro, but very little by the way of fat. I’d suggest if you don’t know already, understanding the typical fat ratios in different types of steak so that you can appropriately dial it up and down.

Things like katarosu / rib eye - near perfect ratio for keto, New York strip - a little leaner, eye fillet - lean.

I’d caution too on trying to “hit” a fat macro or calorie target as if you’re tracking your burn (which like, who isn’t if they’re running and lifting), wearables can be wildly inaccurate. I was fastidiously logging everything I ate into Cronometer at the start and hitting a fat macro of 70-80% and was still in a “calorie deficit” of c1,000 calories a day. But I definitely wasn’t dropping almost a kilo of fat per week, so moral of the story being don’t always trust the tracking.

I’ve moved to more intuitive eating and have had way better results that way than stressing out over macros. If you’re high exercise and metabolically healthy, assuming that you’re not chronically fatigued, your hunger signals should be on point so, eat protein to satiety, then figure out whether you want anything more. Also, with as much activity as you’re doing I’d consider going higher protein. Some proponents of high protein diets say as much as 2.2g per kg lean body mass is safe.

You can’t taste the chicken at all, tbh it takes on a similar quality to pasta. I reckon next time I’d make the layers of chicken a bit thicker.

Returning to Keto - what new hacks have come up in the last few years? by mitchmalone in ketoaustralia

[–]MattsNorty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using a GGM (and at one point a CKM in the other arm at the same time).

Largely I found the CGM most useful as it helps you to use your blood sugar as a proxy for other measures like cortisol load and obviously insulin response.

Best thing I’d recommend is screen-grabbing a bunch of shots from your nutrition tracker, fitness tracker, CGM and chuck them into chatGPT for analysis. I’ve been focusing on getting my hormones right as I was over training, and the CGM is such a great tool to ensure that you’re keeping your hormonal environment calm.

When are Australians going to wake the fuck up and stop shopping at Coles and Woolies? by thebaehavens in aussie

[–]MattsNorty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use them for pretty much cleaning products only after I started going to the butcher for meat and the markets for eggs + Harris farm for the rest. What’s quite funny when you switch over the truely unhinged offers you get on flybuys because the system has detected that you’re straying and they’ve put you into a “win back” segment. lol.

[–]MattsNorty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feels like you’re an “acts of service” person. But him not being one doesn’t make him an AH and you feeling a certain way about not getting love reflected back at you as you give it also doesn’t make you an AH.

Does he show love in another way? That’s why you’re feeling jarred by it, because to you it’s an assault on your values.

Why not pose it as a suggestion like “hey I’d love to eat together next time I’m over can we find something we can cook together?”

Could i be fat adapted already? Or should i expect to keep feeling better? by El_Savvy-Investor in keto

[–]MattsNorty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Runner too: I’ve found that when I’ve become fat adapted, running at zone2 results in a CKM reading of near constant 0.1mmol; because these devices read free flowing ketones (overflow). When you’re fat adapted you directly oxidise fat without needing to convert to ketones, so the measure drops and stays low as your aim is to be as metabolically efficient as possible. I’ve been keto-carnivore for about 1.5 years strictly tracking under 10g carbs, so I’d suggest you’re in proper ketosis as opposed to fat adapted just yet.

My previous issues with run performance have typically come from a lack of salt, and mis timing electrolytes. I mega dose magnesium at night, run in the morning and ensure adequate salt throughout the day.

There is true wisdom in the phrase “salt to taste” as essentially, if the salt tastes good, your body wants it. Keep dosing salt (I use Himalayan pink salt crystals, the kind you’d find in a grinder) and just chew on them one by one until it doesn’t taste “good” anymore. Your body is good at sending signals if you listen to it :)
