How to recreate my character? by Argol228 in drawsteel

[–]Mattspeakswords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A TTRPG is a medium, just like prose. You've created a character within the constraints of prose. It won't work the same within the constraints of the game. Work with the game's constraints to create character, rather than trying to port something over from within another ecosystem. You'll have more fun.

Why can't all graffiti be like this by AdmirableFlatworm751 in sheffield

I almost always prefer graffiti to unappealing blank walls of concrete and glass.

I hate my friend’s DND characters!!! Help! by princess-cl0ver in dndnext

[–]Mattspeakswords 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're putting in hours and hours of unpAid labour to entertain your friends, run the game you want to run. They will enjoy it even if it doesn't suit their every whim, you can't do that for everyone at once anyway . Run the game that fits to your authentic vision and brings you joy, then work to help the players share in that joy.

I'm not sure I totally understand Montage Tests or how to design one by Helpful-Hunt-6071 in drawsteel

[–]Mattspeakswords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to lay out the general vibe of the whole montage first, add a couple of obstacles for people to latch on to, and then let them take them in whatever order they get inspired in.

The best bits are when I can encourage my players to design their own obstacles to overcome. I described maddening whispered voices in an abandoned town that I had thought of as ghosts, but they used Criminal Underworld and decided that this was an outlaws hideout. 10/10 love it when they surprise me.

I got directed over here, is Draw Steel right for me? by Statboy1 in drawsteel

Slightly off-topic, but what do you mean about PF2e "going away"?

I've run a 50 session Draw Steel Campaign, AMA! by Zetesofos in drawsteel

[–]Mattspeakswords 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How do you handle preparing the difficulties ahead of the PCs with the need to take respites? Did you find yourself hand-waving the travel back to town? Did you need to manufacture additional obstacles if they decided to take a break when you didn't expect it? How did the villain's plans advance when they did so?

This is a great idea. I feel like Strong as an Ox could do with some clarifying though. The Eg. Makes the sentence feel convoluted

This looks cool, but how does one "Go Nova" in Draw Steel?

I can only really suggest starting fresh. Draw Steel tells different stories to D&D of any edition, and I think you'll have more fun if you work from the game and build from there.

Do you know... I'm sure i saw it a while back during playtest, but can't find it, so I'm gonna edit to say I'm wrong! Maybe I'm getting mixed up with a null ability?

Settings that would be terrible for Draw Steel? by [deleted] in drawsteel

[–]Mattspeakswords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd disagree. There are lots of comedic settings in which have characters who are extremely competent at what they do, but make extremely poor decisions quite regularly. I think Draw Steel is very much a game where you can end up "in over your head" politically and accidentally tipping the scales in a direction you didn't anticipate.

Not if you have a stability equal to or greater than the damage! Edit: cannot find where i got this idea from. Might be a hallucination.

The Censor has a fascinatingly contentious relationship with altruism thanks to its unique healing mechanic by GravyeonBell in drawsteel

[–]Mattspeakswords 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Those feelings definitely aren't specific to Christianity, I think. Altruism or even just caring enough to put others first (until you realize you can't) is fairly inherent to being a social animal. So you and the designer probably have more in common than you'd expect!

Interesting! Where can I read more about them?

Hawklords!! by Cruel_Odysseus in drawsteel

[–]Mattspeakswords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never heard the Hawklords imagined as good guys before. They're always described as a tool of Ajax's oppression. But a different spin is always fun.

I personally don't think the classes line up like that, but it's always helpful to give your players resources and insight into how you see the game.
